What is Diversity, Inclusion, Access and Equity?
Diversity is about difference and the variety of characteristics that we all
bring to the world but might not necessarily share. It’s not just about
religion, age, disability, gender, sexual orientation or race, but other
characteristics too such as socioeconomic background, personality type,
and a multitude of characteristics both visible and hidden that make up a
person. The breath of diversity available to us is infinite.

What is Diversity, Inclusion, Access and Equity?
Inclusion is about ensuring that the right conditions are in place so that
every person is able to achieve their full potential regardless of personal
characteristics, socioeconomic background or personality type.
Wherever we operate in the world, and across every part of our work,
we strive to create an inclusive culture in which difference is both
recognized and valued.

What is Diversity, Inclusion, Access and Equity?
Accessibility an umbrella term for all aspects which influence a
person’s ability to function within an environment. Accessibility can be
defined as the "ability to access" the functionality, and possible benefit,
of some system or entity and is used to describe the degree to which a
product such as a device, service, environment is accessible by as
many people as possible.

What is Diversity, Inclusion, Access and Equity?
Equity is an approach that ensures everyone has access to the same
opportunities and are recognized and valued. Equity recognizes that
advantages and barriers exist, and that, as a result, we all don’t all start
from the same place. Equity is a process that begins by acknowledging
that unequal starting place and continuously works to correct and
address the imbalance.

A Road for Everyone- Scenario
Marta spent a summer volunteering in Guatemala working with a local fishing
village that often traveled on an old and crumbling dirt road with it’s daily catch to
sell in the major city. Along this road many women sold their wares, children went
to and from school and livestock, pets and other animals frequently roamed.
However, the villagers often struggled to reach the city because of the
deteriorating road conditions. As a part of her CGI U Commitment, Marta decided
that she would work with the village elders, all men, as well as with some
contractors Marta knew from her time spent in the city to begin conceptualizing
the construction of a new road from the village to the city. What does she need to
consider when it comes to diversity, inclusion, access and equity?
John recently returned home from a long period of time working with the
International Rescue Committee in rural Pakistan where he saw that there
were a number of girls committed to getting an education, but had no place to
learn. To address this, and as a part of his CGI U Commitment to Action, John
has partnered with his friends and their organization to build a school for girls
in the village where he lived and worked. What can John and his friends do to
ensure all girls have access to the school he builds?
Constructing a School for Girls- Scenario
Kobwana was tired of hearing about poachers staling the lives of threatened
animal species throughout his home country of Botswana and wanted to do
something. After learning about drones in his engineering class he began to
think about how the technology could help to support locally led efforts to
address this problem. As a part of his CGI U commitment to action, he has
developed a system using drones to help farmers monitor the growth of their
fields and local rangers in Chobe National Park to monitor poaching. What
does he need to consider in relationship to diversity, inclusion, access and
equity?

Campus Commitment to Recycling - Scenario
Suneeta is passionate about climate change and has created a CGI U
commitment to get more of her fellow students to reduce, reuse and regularly
recycle as well as to ban harmful materials from campus such as plastic bags
and straws. She has already made a lot of headway, but some students with
disabilities who use straws regularly have complained and some local
businesses that use plastic bags have also questioned the push for this
program on campus. How can Suneeta ensure she considers elements related
to Diversity, Inclusion, Access and Equity?
