TOTAL DEFENCE DAY

The school commemorated Total Defence Day on 15 February 2016 with the theme Together We Keep Singapore Strong. The pupils were not only reminded to strengthen their resolve to keep Singapore safe, secure and special but also to be committed to building a cohesive society ready to face the future together. The Total Defence Day message read by our Principal Mrs Eugenie Tan encouraged the pupils to start playing their part regardless of age. The assembly programme for the day included a talk by a Co-Canossian Educator (CCE) who is a Prison Warden from the Singapore Prison Service (SPS). He shared about how he contributes to Total Defence as a Prison Warden and how the pupils can play their part in defending Singapore. In the week leading up to 15 February, different teachers took to the stage before the morning flag-raising ceremony to reinforce the five pillars of Total Defence - Economic Defence, Military Defence, Social Defence, Civil Defence and Psychological Defence. The morning segments explained the five pillars and heightened the pupils’ awareness of Total Defence. Teachers then led their pupils in class discussions and guided them in activities during their Character and Citizenship (CCE) lessons. These lessons were designed to help the pupils understand the roles they can play for Total Defence. The pupils from the Primary 1 and 2 levels wrote Thank You cards at the end of their classroom activity and the cards were sent to the Changi Fire Station and Bedok North Neighbourhood Police Station as a form of appreciation to the firefighters and policemen for keeping Singapore safe. Pupils from the Primary 4 to 6 levels had their work displayed on their classroom notice boards as an acknowledgement of their efforts and a reminder of their pledge to keep Singapore safe. Throughout the week, different game booths were set up during the three recesses to further reiterate the message of Total Defence Day. Pupils understood how they could play their part for Civil Defence by learning how to pack a Ready Bag. A Ready Bag contains items that are important during an emergency. Information about the items to be included in the bag was shared and the pupils were quizzed on which five items should be in the bag. Another game booth tapped on the common Snakes and Ladders game which the pupils were familiar with. Through this game booth, pupils learnt various ways to contribute to Total Defence as they moved the tokens on the game board. There was also information displayed about the different departments of Home Team Singapore and pupils were asked to match the correct Home Team department to the personnel wearing a specific uniform. The different game booths definitely enhanced the pupils knowledge of Total Defence and the roles they could play in a fun way. Written by Ms Chen Kang Li

CYBER WELLNESS WEEK

The school organised the Cyber Wellness Week from 1 to 5 February 2016 with the theme Play Your Part For A Better Internet. This is in line with the theme for this year’s Safer Internet Day. Safer Internet Day is conducted worldwide annually on 10 February and aims to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people across the world. The Cyber Wellness Week commenced with an assembly talk to inform the pupils about the rationale of the week and the activities. The talk ended with the Upper Primary pupils reciting the Cyber Wellness Pledge with gusto and the Lower Primary pupils singing the Cyber Wellness Jingle. Throughout the week, the pupils participated in various activities during their respective recesses at the Cyber Wellness booth set up in the canteen. The pupils had to read the information provided on the posters put up and watch a video to answer the questions found on their task-cards. Tokens were given out to pupils who participated and completed the games. Through the week-long activities, the pupils gained a deeper understanding on the importance of being responsible and respectful internet users. In playing their part to make the internet a safe place, the pupils are living up to the Canossian attributes of Commitment, Compassion and Cheerfulness each day. Written by Ms Atiqah

PRIMARY 2 LEARNING JOURNEY TO LITTLE INDIA

Little India is a part of Singapore filled with rich heritage. Our Primary 2 pupils were given the opportunity to visit Little India in March to gain a deeper understanding of the Indian culture and to appreciate the multicultural diversity in Singapore. The learning journey started with the pupils entering into the world of henna painting, a ceremonial art form which originated in ancient India. Not only did they learn about the origin of this art form, the pupils also had a chance to have their hands adorned with creative designs. It was a refreshing new experience for many of the pupils and they were all thoroughly excited. After getting their hands painted, the pupils were treated to a live demonstration on how to wear traditional Indian costumes. The pupils were all enthralled by the beautiful sarees and the intricacy of the attire. The pupils then proceeded to a restaurant where they tasted Indian vegetarian food such as poori, batura and thosai. The pupils enjoyed the food tasting session very much as this was the first time for many of them trying the different variety of delicious Indian cuisine. The feast ended with traditional Indian sweets and snacks. Some of the pupils even bought traditional Indian tidbits as a way of sharing their memorable experience with their family. Though the visit to Little India was short, it was a unique and enriching learning experience for the Primary 2 pupils.

PRIMARY 4 AND PRIMARY 1 RECESS BUDDY SYSTEM In the first week of school in Term 1, each Primary 1 pupil was matched with a Primary 4 buddy during their recess. For three days during recess, the Primary 4 pupils taught the Primary 1 pupils how to queue up to purchase their food from the stalls, where to return their plates after they finished their food and where to assemble after recess. The Primary 4 buddies were also busy showing the Primary 1 pupils around the school compound and helping them to adapt to the new school environment. The Primary 4 pupils were cheerful and committed when carrying out their role as the buddies to the Primary 1 pupils, who formed a close bond to them. The school is proud of the Primary 4 pupils for being wonderful role models. CHINESE NEW YEAR VISIT TO ST JOSEPH’S HOME During the season of the Chinese New Year, a group of 30 pupils (28 from Primary 2 and 1 each from Primary 3 and Primary 6) visited St Joseph’s Home (SJH) to bring cheer to the senior citizens on 17 February 2016. The pupils sang catchy festive songs for the residents and helped in distributing mandarin oranges to wish them the very best for the coming year. The pupils also enjoyed a hearty lunch provided by St Joseph’s Home. Through this visit and the time spent rehearsing the songs, the young Canossians developed a sense of compassion and learnt to work together as a team. The pupils also had a very meaningful experience and are looking forward to their next visit. Written by Mrs Yap Yah Lian

HEALTH WEEK— SACPS STAYS FIT FOR LIFE

Health Week 2016 was held from 15 to 19 February. The main objective for Health Week was to share with pupils the importance of staying physically active as part of a healthy lifestyle. Pupils had the opportunity to be more active and to work up a sweat during recess when they participated at the various game stations set up by the Co-Canossian Educators (CCEs). Games such as shooting hoops and striking targets were manned by fathers from the Dads@SACPS club and were highly popular with the pupils. Pupils were also introduced to Zumba and they enjoyed themselves tremendously under the coaching of Instructor Katz who is one of the school CCEs. The pupils performed the energising dance moves with ease and were unwilling to return to class when recess ended. The Health Week was made possible through the collaboration and partnership between the PE Department and CCEs. The immense support and enthusiasm from the team of CCEs made the Health Week a success. The school is grateful for the help rendered by the CCEs in facilitating the recess activities. The presence of the mothers and fathers during recess encouraged and motivated the pupils to get active and work towards a healthy lifestyle. Written by Ms Rachel Yim

GLOBAL VILLAGE CHILDREN AND YOUTH BILINGUAL SPEECH COMPETITION

The 7th Global Village Children and Youth Bilingual Speech Competition was organized by Sing China International Educulture Group Private Limited. The competition aimed to promote better understanding and appreciation of the Chinese Language and culture among pupil participants from Singapore and China. The competition also supported the annual national Speak Mandarin Campaign of Singapore. Three of our pupils, Natalie Mae Tan U-en from 2 Justice, Alessandra Marissa Anthony from 3 Courage and Wang Yihui from 6 Temperance were shortlisted for the finals held at the Regional Language Centre (RELC) on 30 January 2016. They were among the 30 participants chosen to represent Singapore in the competition. In the finals, our pupils paired up with their pupil partners from China, Shandong. Our pupils delivered their speech in Chinese Language, while their partners from China spoke in English. The three pupils performed very well despite the short preparation time given for the final competition. Natalie and Alessandra won the second prize in their category. Yihui received the first prize in her category. The school is very proud of the pupils exhibiting the Canossian attributes of Commitment and Cheerfulness in their preparations and in the competition. Written by Mrs Tan Qing Hui PRIMARY 4 TAMIL LANGUAGE PONGGAL LEARNING JOURNEY 12 Primary 4 Tamil Language pupils visited the Ponggal Fair at Campbell Lane organized in conjunction with Ponggal Celebrations on Thursday 14 January 2016. The main objective of this learning journey was to help the pupils understand the importance of celebrating Ponggal in the Tamil community. Pongal is a harvest festival and is a traditional occasion observed by the Tamil community to give thanks to nature as well as to celebrate the life cycles that give us grain. The Tamil Language pupils viewed a video presentation which explained what took place on the four days of the Ponggal Celebration. Following that, the pupils watched a line-up of traditional folk dances. The pupils enjoyed the interesting video presentation and the dances. For the next part of the learning journey, the pupils visited different stations to learn different skills. They learnt the art of making thoranams (traditional wall hangings made from coconut leaves), making of Ponggal Rice and spinning the top (pambaram). The pupils also had the opportunity to see some cattle and goats. The pupils enjoyed the trip tremendously and the trip helped them gain a deeper understanding of the celebration of Ponggal. PRIMARY 2 KOMPANG ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME Kompang is a well-known traditional Malay musical instrument used during weddings and religious celebrations. The performance usually comprises an ensemble of drum players. The instrument also comes in various sizes and is believed to be of Arab origin. Over the span of five lessons, the Primary 2 pupils were given the opportunity to learn about the origin and

significance of the kompang as well as how to beat the rhythms in unison. It was truly an enjoyable and enriching way for Primary 2 pupils to learn about Social Studies through the exciting kompang lessons.

PRIMARY 4 WAYANG KULIT ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME Wayang Kulit is an ancient form of storytelling that originates from Indonesia. The master puppeteer manipulates the swivelling arms using the sticks which are attached to the puppets behind a screen. The puppets are then brought to life under the skilful control of the puppeteer. The puppets are crafted from buffalo hide and mounted on bamboo sticks. When held up behind a piece of white cloth, with an electric bulb or an oil lamp as the light source, shadows are cast on the screen. The Primary 4 pupils had the opportunity to create a story and stage a performance for their class in Term 1. The performance was accompanied by the gamelan ensemble for their class. The pupils made the shadow puppets come alive under the guidance of their instructor, Mr Aryanto, from Sri Warisan Som Said Performing Arts Limited. Through this unique experience, the pupils learnt to appreciate this ancient Art form and pick up key concepts for Social Studies. Written by Ms Veron Yap

BEGINNING OF SCHOOL YEAR MASS The Beginning of School Year Mass was celebrated on 7 January 2016. The Celebrant was Fr Terence Kesavan. He reminded the pupils about being grateful for a chance of education and to be diligent in all that they do. At the Mass, the Pupil Planner and the Staff Planner was offered up as symbols of the work that both teachers and pupils needed to put in for the year. Following that, there was the recitation of the dedication of pupils and teachers. At the end of the Mass, everyone was reflective and started the day with peace in their hearts. Written by Mrs Agnes Lim GIVE BACK PROJECT 2016

The Give Back Project has been carried out for several years at St Anthony’s Canossian Primary School. It is an annual community outreach project in the school that is carried out in conjunction with the Chinese New Year season to help the needy and less fortunate living in the Fengshan neighbouhood. This project is carried out in collaboration with Fengshan Community Club. Pupils and their parents were very supportive towards this project and donated generously. The donated items were then packed into gift bags by our school prefects and sent to Fengshan Community Club to be distributed to the identified residents. Each gift bag was attached with a Chinese New Year greeting card filled with well wishes and drawings done by our pupils. The Give Back Project serves to remind our pupils that they have been abundantly blessed. Hence, it is important to have an attitude of gratitude and pay forward the blessings received by helping others who are in need. This project reinforces our school’s core value of Charity and nurtures our pupils to become Leaders with a Heart for Others. Written by Mdm Lim Siew Fang LENTEN ACTIVITIES The following activities and events took place during the season of Lent this year. Ash Wednesday Mass The Catholic pupils and staff of both the Primary and Secondary Schools celebrated the Ash Wednesday Mass on 10 February 2016. Those who attended the Mass were reminded about the little sacrifices that everyone could do as an act of love for God. These little acts of sacrifices should help everyone become better persons. Imposition of ashes was also given to all Catholic pupils and staff. The Mass signalled the start of Lent. Stations of the Cross The Catholic pupils had an opportunity to go through the Stations of the Cross in school during the Pastoral Care (Catechism) lessons. Pupils meditated on the 14 Stations of the Cross which depicts the life and sufferings of Jesus till the time of His death.

Rite of Reconciliation The Primary 3 to Primary 6 Catholic pupils went through the Rite of Reconciliation on 18 February 2016. The priests of the East District parishes were in school to listen to the confession of the pupils. Pupils were prepared for the session by their Pastoral Care (Catechism) teachers during the Pastoral Care (Catechism) lessons the week before. It was heartening to see the pupils making a good confession as part of their preparation for Easter. Lenten Project In line with the school’s Core Values of Charity, Humility and Forgiveness, the school planned a project in which pupils are strongly encouraged to perform a good deed and make small sacrifices during the season of Lent. Pupils are given a simple calendar to help them chart their little acts of sacrifice and good deeds. They are also encouraged to make a little money box out of recycled materials and to make a small donation daily over the period of Lent for the needy. The donations will be given to the Canossa Mission Singapore to help support their numerous outreach programmes for the less fortunate. Through this project, pupils will internalise the values of Charity which is the virtue of love and the act of alms-giving, Humility in which they learn to put others before themselves and Forgiveness in which they learn to accept the differences and uniqueness of one another. Written by Mrs Agnes Lim CANOSSIAN SAINTS’ WEEK 2016 The Canossian Saints’ Celebration this year was a weeklong affair from 19 February to 26 February with daily activities planned. The celebrations began with the Canossian Family Night on 19 February in which parents and their daughters were invited to spend an evening to discover and learn about the Canossian history and heritage. Together with the Canossian Sisters, the school organised a trail of five stations to help parents understand the beginnings of the Canossian Brand of Education and how St. Magdalene’s charism lives on today. The evening was a fun-filled one, with parents and their daughters participating in different types of interactive bonding activities, ranging from watching skits, completing jigsaw puzzles and quizzes to the singing of the school song. The night ended with everyone interacting over dinner. The following week started with an activity known as Colour Me Canossian on 22 February Monday. Pupils and staff were encouraged to put on something yellow and blue in the form of hair accessories, shoelaces as well as socks. The activity was well-received by everyone in school. On Tuesday 23 February, an activity called I Am A Canossian saw pupils and staff placing thumbprints on the specially painted portraits of the two Canossian Saints. The activity signifies unity as One Canossian family. To further reinforce the pupils’ understanding about the life and works of St Magdalene and St Bakhita, the pupils took part in an activity on 24 February Wednesday to complete the quotations of the two Canossian Saints. Posters and sayings of the two Saints were placed around the canteen. The pupils read the posters and completed an entry form. Five winners from each level received a small token. The festivities continued on 25 February with Canossian Saints’ Day. Written by Mrs Agnes Lim

PREFECTS’ INVESTITURE 2016 The Prefects’ Investiture is a meaningful part of the annual Canossian Saints’ Day celebrations as the school comes together to recognise and empower Student Leaders to follow in St Magdalene’s footsteps. Student Leaders are reminded of their duty to serve the Canossian student community with grace and justice. The investiture began with the Head Girl, Julia Tan, together with the Assistant Head Girls, Lauren Tan and Hana Ariqah, leading the Prefects in a march into the school hall. They each held an item of significance –the School Flag that signifies the Prefects’ promise and loyalty to the school, a candle that represents the Light of Wisdom, Integrity and Compassion and a Book of Elect which records the names of all Canossian Prefects throughout the years. During the ceremony the guest of honour, Sister Theresa, installed the new Prefect Executive Committee and 41 new Prefects. The ceremony ended with Julia, the Head Girl, giving a speech and the Assistant Head Girl, Hana Ariqah, leading the Prefects in reciting the Prefect pledge as a mark of their promise and commitment to serve the school with pride and integrity. The school hopes that our Prefects will exemplify the true spirit of St Magdalene and St Bakhita by becoming Leaders with a Heart for others as they serve the school with Commitment, Compassion and Cheerfulness.
