November 2015

Dear MOPC,

In this issue of the newsletter, the elders and deacons who you elected at our con-gregational gathering last month will intro-duce themselves.

These people have responded to God’s call to lead and nurture our church, and I am grateful for their willingness to serve.

In early 2016 we will lay hands upon and pray for these people to ordain and install them in their re-spective offices.

Elders run the church. They meet monthly to pray and grow in faith together, hear from church staff, manage the finances, and discuss and make decisions for all areas of our church. We call our group of elders “the session.”

Elders lead and serve on “ministry teams.” Each team is responsible for some aspect of the ministry of MOPC such as Personnel, Global Missions, Tech-nology, and Children’s Ministry. A complete list of ministry teams is on the last page of the newsletter.

We are called “Presbyterian” because we are led by “presbyters,” which comes from the Greek biblical word for “elder.” We read in the Bible how Israel and the New Testament church were led by elders.

Deacons are called to a ministry of com-passion and service. They meet monthly and show the love of Christ by helping our hospitalized or sick with visits and meals, hosting receptions at memorial and funeral

services, sending care packages to col-lege students, and caring for people in other significant ways.

The ministry of deacon came about when the first apostles and “elders” needed help with the practical needs of

the people in order to have time to teach the Word and guide the churches. Our elders and deacons are a gift to us. They pray, gather, plan, serve, and give of their time and energy. They take on a great deal

for all of us. Our officers play a large part in making MOPC the church it is.

It is an honor, a challenge, and a deep responsibility to serve as an elder or deacon. Be appre-ciative of the twelve people cur-rently on the session, and the eighteen people serving as

deacons. The standard for any Christian minis-

try is that of Christ who came “not to be served but to serve” (Matthew 20:28).

This is why in one of our worship ser-vices we have them kneel, and other el-ders and deacons gather around and lay hands on them in prayer. They can’t fulfill their obligations without the strength of the Holy Spirit and the prayers of Christ’s people.

In His Grace,

Phil Pastor Phil

Sermons in God’s Big Story for November

We are getting down to the end of our year through the Bible. Here is what you can expect on Sunday mornings in Novem-ber…

November 1 Philemon “A Heart to Heart Letter” Paul writes this short letter on behalf of a slave

November 8 Hebrews “Hold On” Why is Christ better than the sacrificial system we read about in the Old Testament? This book answers that.

November 15 James Walk Your Talk This letter is practical, hard-hitting, and no-nonsense.

November 22 I and II Peter Courage These words from Peter were to encourage Christians who were going through tre-mendous trials.

November 29 I, II and III John Truth and Love Three writings are from the apostle John who knows there is truth in which we are to live, and that it has to do with God and love.

ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES

We are in the “home stretch” … as they say in baseball! We’ve had a truly amazing year in our journey through the entire Bible—God’s Big Story!

In these last seven classes, we will be finishing the New Testament books. We begin on November 1st with Phile-mon, which is the final (and very unique) letter written by the Apostle Paul. If you haven’t yet attended this class, now is a great time to check it out! We’re in Room 502. Come and bring your coffee with you!

Thank you to our church family at MOPC for all the help you gave us as we prepared to move. Your generous gifts of prayer, encouragement, time, muscle strength, food, and lodging are so appreciated. We couldn’t have done it without you. We hope we will see many of you if, and when, you come to Washington. You will always be wel-come to stop in for a visit, stay overnight, or for a week or two. You are in our prayers. God’s blessings to all.

Senior Adult Fellowship Luncheon – Thursday, November 12 is the date; 12:00 noon is the time; Fellowship Hall is the place. Bring along a friend, your favorite dish to share and be intrigued by Donaree Neville as she tells us about her Pot-tery in Japan adventure! This will be very interesting and I am anxious to hear all about it, how about you?? See you then at 12:00 noon, November 12th.

Parking Lot Traffic Pattern: You probably noticed that our parking lot has been resurfaced and the lines re-painted. For safety reasons, we also had arrows painted to direct the flow of traffic into the parking lot. Please follow these arrows and do not turn right at the end of the driveway. If you want to park on the west side of the lot, cir-cle around as indicated by the arrows.

Meet MOPC’s New Officers At our annual congregational meeting on October 25th, we elected new elders and deacons for three-year terms beginning in 2016. We asked each of them to introduce themselves by answering the following questions:

What is your occupation? Who is in your family? What are you interests? Why have you accepted this calling?

Here are their answers:

Nancy Singer (Elder): I work at Salt Lake Community College as Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. My husband Rich and I moved to Salt Lake from Tucson, AZ four years ago for my job at the college. Rich retired when we moved here. We have two grown children. Owen is 27 and lives in Flagstaff, AZ. Our daughter, Gibson, is 25. She is married to Anthony, and they live in Fort Worth, TX. My interests include following TCU foot-ball, University of Arizona basketball, and the SLCC Bruins! I enjoy gardening, cooking, and walking my dog, Tank. Rich and I enjoy theatre, both musical theatre and straight plays. I started attending MOPC about four years ago, shortly after we moved to Salt Lake. I have served on the Worship Committee and the Per-sonnel Committee, have participated in the Women’s Retreat, provided childcare at the Mount, helped with the Angel Tree program at Christmas and everywhere I serve I have found people who lovingly serve the Lord and others. I have been challenged to deep-en my faith and have grown spiritually since becoming a member of MOPC. I have gained so much from MOPC, I am happy to give back to ensure that MOPC will make a difference in people’s spiritual lives for years to come.

Jackie Longmore (Elder): I am a retired elementary and pre-school teacher. I have three daughters, three stepsons, lots of grandkids and even four great-grandkids. My interests? Being involved with people! I am able to volunteer by teaching a fitness class, serving on a spiritual care team at Primary Medical Center, being involved with homeless programs, working on mission trips in and out of the country, attending Women's Bible Study and helping with Service Camp. MOPC is such a blessing in my life that I am humbled to be able to serve in this way.

Page 11: Commitment of Giving Sunday - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com... · Testament church were led by elders. Deacons are called to a ministry of com-passion and service. They meet

Page 11

Erich Petersen (Elder): I have been a Professor of Geology & Geophysics at the University of Utah since 1983. Nancy and I have been married for 38 years. Our son Alex (age 34) was just married this summer to Daniela in Colombia. They live in Lucca, Italy, where Alex is a professor in Econophysics (don't ask) and Daniela has a degree in architecture. Our son Mark (age 31) was married four years ago to Charisse. Mark is postdoc at U hospital, Charisse is in the last year of her doctoral studies. My interests include the Tuesday Men's Group, hiking, leading geological field trips locally, nationally and internationally, and photography. I ac-cepted this calling because I was an Elder a while back and it was

a very rewarding experience. I look forward to being more actively involved in MOPC, our spiritual home, by serving in this capacity again. The Lord has been gently tugging and the time has arrived.

Jim Wight (Elder): I’m employed as a software engineer and for the last 7 years I’ve been working from home for a company headquartered in Philadelphia called GENEX Services. The com-pany processes worker’s compensation and managed care claims. I’m married to Kathy and we celebrated 30 years of mar-riage this year in June. We have a daughter Britney (Bellingham, WA) married to James and son Greg (SLC, UT) newlywed to Vanessa in July. I enjoy playing racquetball, hiking, biking and go-ing out to eat with family and friends. This will be my third time serving as an Elder on Session. After prayer and meditation and seeking advice of people close to me, I decided the time was right to serve again.

Robert “Wes” Keller (Deacon): I am a retired gastroenterologist who now volunteers at the 4th Street Clinic. I’ve been married to Jean for 46 years and have 4 children. Emilie and Brad live in Santa Monica, CA and have two children, 13-year-old Taylor and 5-year-old Liam. Wesley and his partner, Shelly, live in McCall, ID. Michaela is married to Pete McCoy and lives in Park City with 8-year-old Keller and 5-year-old Lily. Patrick is married to Meg and lives in Park City with Henry, aged 4 and Will, 15 months. Jean and I enjoy hiking, biking, traveling, and fly fishing in Victor, ID. I am interested in being more active in the MOPC community and am honored to be asked to serve as a Deacon. I hope my experience helping patients will be of use to MOPC.

Page 12: Commitment of Giving Sunday - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com... · Testament church were led by elders. Deacons are called to a ministry of com-passion and service. They meet

Page 12

Molly Molenaar (Deacon): I am starting a new Mathnasium location in West Jordan that I will co-own and manage. I have two children, Sophia (8) and Michael (12). I enjoy riding bikes, running, am learning to ice skate and teach math to kids. I have accepted the calling of deacon because I love my church com-munity. Our church has provided a consistent foundation for my children since they were infants and I feel blessed to be a part of this community.

Julie A. Davidson (Deacon): In retirement, my occupation is now Wife, Mother, and Grandmother. My family includes my husband, Bruce, three married daughters and five grand-children. My interests are cooking, knitting, quilting, shop-ping, and reading. My purpose for accepting this call is be-cause I consider MOPC part of my extended family and I want to be available to get to know our fellow church goers in depth.

Nancy Harper (Deacon): Many may not know that my given name is AnneMarie and “Nancy” is a nickname I’ve had since I was a small child. Before retiring I worked part-time as a pre-school teacher and librarian. Now my full-time job is wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Our Salt Lake family consists of my hus-band Rich, nephew Alan Barta, dog Rosie (a standard poodle) and myself. Rich and I have four sons, 11 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. We lost our first great grandchild, Trinity, last October. My interests have changed over the years, but they still revolve around the same things: family (which now requires lots

of travel), reading (involved in two book groups), cooking (am ever hopeful of a dream kitchen), sewing, knitting, and gardening. We have a “van camper,” which we hope to use more in our travels. My reason to serve: This past year has been a hard one for our family, but it was made so much easier knowing we had the love of God, and, we were surrounded by a community of caring followers of Christ. The prayers, the caring and love of others gave us peace so we could cope and grow from these experiences. I hope I can share some of the love, support and comfort I received with others.

Page 13: Commitment of Giving Sunday - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com... · Testament church were led by elders. Deacons are called to a ministry of com-passion and service. They meet

Page 13

Maggie Frazier (Deacon): I studied Public Health and Span-ish at Westminster College and now I’m a Health Specialist at Mountainland Head Start in Provo. My parents, Pam and Jeff, live in Laramie, Wyoming with my younger brothers, Timmy (20) and Graham (17). I enjoy hiking, music, french pressed coffee, cooking and spending time with people. I am looking forward to the opportunity to connect with people and support our commu-nity. I feel a significant calling to love and care for others and sees this role as a natural expression of that call. John 13:34

Terry Meidinger (Deacon): Occupation: Mechanical Engi-neer working for Triumph Gear Systems in Park City. Triumph designs and manufactures Accessory drives and Flight Controls for aircraft. Family: Married to wife, Kaye, for 38 years. Chil-dren are Erin, Andrea and Megan. Interests: Music (enjoy sing-ing), Reading, Fishing, Sports, small building projects, travel and grandkids. I accepted this call because I was a little afraid of it and did not want to do it. In the end, it was a choice to walk in faith that God would provide whatever is necessary to do the job.

Candy Vila (Deacon): I'm a retired social worker. I have three adult stepchildren, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way. I'm a widow. My mom and one sister live here, and I have another sister in Southern California. I love to read and listen to fiction. I enjoy walking, (get 10,000 steps most days), working out, spending time with my grand-kids (the youngest are ages 8 and 12). I also spend time try-ing to figure out my computer and phone. Why did I accept this calling? I've had some really supportive deacons in the past and want to provide that support to others now that I've got time.

You can give the child of a prisoner the joy of Christmas this year by participating in our Angel Tree ministry. When mom or dad is in prison, it is the children who do hard time. You can let these children know they are remembered and loved. Beginning Sunday, November 29h there will be a Christmas tree in the gathering area decorated with this year’s Angels. Please consider “adopting” a child or sibling group from our Angel Tree, Prison Fellowship ministry, for whom you and your family can purchase Christmas gifts. You shop, wrap and deliver directly to the children and their caregiver family. Infor-mation regarding ages, sizes, and specific needs or wishes will be written on each an-gel (usually one clothing item & one ‘fun’ item). Additional booklets about Jesus and His love will also be available to include with the gifts. Instructions, suggestions and book-lets are included in a ‘family’ pack. Caregiver families are selected by zip codes close to the church and have been contacted to approve participation. For more information contact Marilyn Marshall.

Adults: If you’re interested in participating in the game or in driving a team of student spies, please contact Jamie White.

Annual Cookie Bake & PW Bazaar! It’s time once again for the combined efforts of youth ministry and our Presbyterian Women to fundraise for our holiday mission giving. Students: bring some raw cookie dough on Sunday, November 8th at 8 a.m. and we’ll bake up a storm and hope the scent of warm cookies will draw in the congregation! We’ll also have a canned food drive. All proceeds will fund the work of Family Promise in lifting families out of home-lessness. Thanks for your support!

“Understanding the LDS Faith”, Track 2 Learning Lab: On Sundays in November from 9:45-10:45 a.m. (no lab on Nov 8th due to Cookie Bake) we’ll offer our Track 2 Learning Lab for all JH and HS students called “Understanding the LDS Faith.” We’ll dig into some of their main beliefs, and how they compare to our own faith in Jesus Christ. If you’ve ever won-dered what your Mormon friends believe or why they do what they do, this lab is for you. It can be hard to be the minority religion here in Salt Lake, but understanding the dominant faith can help in many ways. Come to Room 506...we promise you’ll learn something new. *Learning Labs are required for all summer trip attendance.

*Wed Night Youth Group (JH and HS) will NOT meet on Nov 25th due to Thanksgiving.

*Annual Permission Slips/Medical Release forms are PAST DUE. Please fill them out ASAP and turn in to the church office. We must have parental release forms for every student who plans to attend any Youth Ministry programming.

Cover Photo: Soon after our congregation began reading “ God’s Big Story” at the beginning of the year, a group of families from the Children’s Ministry began meet-ing in each other’s homes for fellowship and Bible Study. The children have their own discussion group, while the adults meet together in another room. How often do these gatherings take place...once a month, twice a month...? No, every single week!

Update on the MOPC Choir: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 (ESV) Significant change is coming for the MOPC Celebration Singers and the 8:30 worship service. Ruth Rudy, our faithful director for six years finds the need to step aside from regular Sunday music to focus on her role as Director of Children’s Ministry, which has signif-icant Sunday morning responsibilities. This is a further move in the direction taken not long ago to replace weekly choir anthems with a schedule of bi-weekly anthems. Moreover, there has been a trend for several years of progressively smaller choir membership num-bers. Given these two factors, the choir will focus on providing occa-sional anthems this program year, and leadership for introit and hymns on these same occasional days instead of weekly. For ex-ample, we have plans for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter sea-sons and other occasions as they may arise. The choir will sing November 22nd at the 8:30am service. We practice on November 11 and 18 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Please join us for these rehearsals and service. We would love to have you sing with us!
