Companion Program The Senior Companion Program is part of Senior Corps, a network of national andcommunity service programs that each year supports the engagement of nearly500,000 Americans age 55 and older in service to meet critical needs in education, theenvironment, public safety, homeland security, and other areas.
The Senior Companion Program offers friendship and assistance to other olderAmericans who are homebound and need an extra helping hand to live independently intheir own homes. Senior Companions make the lives of those they serve less lonelythrough their friendship, education, provision of community resources, and regularfriendly visits. Thanks to the efforts of Senior Companions, many older adults are able toavoid institutionalization and can lead more happy fulfilling lives in their own homes.
Benefits of Community Volunteer Service Participation:
The Senior Companion serves 20-40 hours a week.
Senior Companion Program is open to income eligible individuals age 55 andover. In return for their service, Senior Companions receive a stipend of $2.65 anhour, reimbursement for transportation, and a monthly training.
Participation in volunteer program does not affect any of your social securitybenefits, food stamps or government housing.40 hour pre-service orientation & education training.
The volunteers annually are recognized for years of service and participate incommunity events

FEBRUARY IN REVIEW3rd annual 5K walk for "A Safe Haven for Newborns"
Commissioner Bovo attended the 3rd Annual Safe Haven for Newborns Walk at AmeliaEarhart Park. The Commissioner presented the organization a Certificate of Appreciationon behalf of the County Commission for their work. The event raises money for the SafeHaven for Newborns initiative.
District Advisory Committee Meeting
Commissioner Esteban Bovo, Jr. hosted his quarterly District Advisory CommitteeMeeting at his office to hear questions, comments, and concerns from residents aroundDistrict 13. At the meeting the Norman and Jean Reach Park project, the Commissioner'stransportation initiatives, and the upcoming Easter Eggstravaganza Event werediscussed.
Sunshine Meeting with Commissioner Rebeca Sosa andCommissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz
Commissioner Esteban Bovo, Jr. met with Commissioners Sosa and Diaz regarding thepotential southwest rail expansion on the CSX rail line corridors. The lines run parallel tothe Palmetto Expressway and the SR874 (Don Shula Expressway) to Zoo Miami endingin Florida City.
Hialeah Housing Authority Valentin's Day Party at Milander
Commissioner Bovo attended Hialeah Housing Authority's Annual Valentine's Day Partyat the Milander Center in Hialeah.
Open Your Heart and Your Home Pet Adoption Event
Commissioner Bovo joined Miami-Dade Animal Services and Miami-Dade Parks,Recreation and Open Spaces hosted another "Open Your Heart and Your Home" eventthat was held on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Amelia Earhart Park's BillGraham Farm Village.
In addition to adopting a pet, event goers took advantage of low-cost vaccinations,micro-chipping and license tags. Pet owners also registered in advance for freespay/neuter services by calling 311. The event also featured music, food trucks, ponyrides, a farm animal petting zoo and a SunPass giveaway. A donation bin was set up for donations of blankets, leashes and other pet products.Check donations were also accepted at a donation booth. Moneys were used toenhance the County's delivery of spay and neuter services, support low-cost adoptions,and prevent the needless killing of sheltered animals.
Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee Visits Zoo Miami
The Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee visited Zoo Miami this month with the help ofCommissioner Esteban Bovo, Jr. The Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs'sGolden Booklet contains activities and tickets for seniors to enjoy the various culturalattractions around the county. Commissioner Bovo attended the Town Council meeting to update Miami Lakesresidents on the various initiatives the Commissioner has been working on as Chair ofthe Commission's Transit and Mobility Services Committee. Commissioner Bovo hasbeen working towards expanding commuter rail in the county with the east-west rail linethat travels from the MIC by the airport west to 137 Avenue.
