for any landscape requirements or restrictions before getting started:
LONG-TERM MAINTENANCE
If working with a contractor, get maintenance estimates as well as landscape design and
installation costs.
MULCH PROTECTS
Mulch around trees and plants to help insulate and retain water from your
irrigation system.
BEWARE OF OVER-MAINTENANCE
Many landscapes are over-pruned, which can damage plants. Focus maintenance on irrigation checks and watering with the seasons according to the watering schedule.

CHOOSESTURDY
Select plants that require
less water and maintenance
and are sturdy enough to
handle your heaviest visitor
traffic.
PLANTSMALLPurchase
smaller, starter plants—which are more cost-efficient—and
space them out to leave room
for their mature size.
MAXIMIZESHADE
Place trees in areas that can
shade buildings, to reduce power costs, as well as parking areas or visitor pathways.
THINKFORWARD
Plan for the mature size of
plants and trees so they will not obstruct power lines, walkways and other areas.
USERFRIENDLYAvoid placing
sharp or spreading plants where they may obstruct visitor walkways, snag
clothing or scratch cars in parking lots.
