How fan convectors work
Smith’s fan and flame-effect fan convectors work efficiently andeffectively with all types of wet central heating systems, includinggas, oil, electric, biomass or LPG boilers. They also require anelectrical connection to run the fan. Hot water from the centralheating system passes through the heat exchanger, transferring itsheat to the aluminium fins. Cooler air is drawn in by the fan andheated as it passes over the heat exchanger, before being expelledgently back into the room. This gives a more even temperaturespread and heats rooms in much less time than a traditional panelradiator. Each Smith’s fan convector includes a low temperaturecut-out system, preventing the product from operating until thesystem water temperature reaches a pre-set level. Electric versionsconnect to a standard electrical system via a fused spur.
Fan convectors use either AC or EC motor technology to drive thefan. AC motors typically provides the end user with a number offixed speeds whilst EC technology offers infinite control over thefan speed and heat output.
At home with Smith’s fan convectors
For a trained heating engineer, installing our fan convectors issimple because they use the same pipe work, fitting proceduresand heat loss calculations as radiators. We also provide installationguides for all our products via our website. With the heat outputswitch left on either normal or boost position, they will come onand off automatically with the central heating system. Each modelincludes a low temperature cut-out, which prevents the productoperating until the water temperature reaches a pre-settemperature. They can be used alone or paired with radiators andcan be sited almost anywhere to suit the size and style of thebuilding. Place them low on walls, above doorways or high up onother walls for safety or space considerations. Our renownedSpace Saver is designed to be sited in a plinth under a kitchenbase unit to create more storage space, worktop surface area orroom for additional white goods.
For those concerned about running costs, fan convectors use avery small amount of electricity to run the fan and/or bulb (flame-effect fan convectors only). Based on an annual usage of 1300hours with electricity charged at 15p per kWh, we calculateelectricity costs to be less than £5 per year for a fan convector andless than £10 per year for flame-effect fan convectors.
Natural Convectors(Perimeter Heating)Requiring connection to a wet central heating system, hot waterpasses through the heat exchanger, transferring its heat to thealuminium fins. The natural movement of air gently circulates overthe heat exchanger, is warmed and evenly distributed around theroom.

Working with heat pumps
Renewable technology grows apace, with ground and air sourceheat pumps beginning to become a viable alternative to boilers asthe principal heat generator in homes around the UK.
Inherent in the heat pump’s design is that the smaller thetemperature difference between the heat source pump (air orground) and the heat sink/emitter (under-floor heating, fanconvector, radiator), the higher the energy efficiency of that heatpump. This higher efficiency means lower fuel bills and greatercarbon savings for that home.
Fan convectors can work very effectively at system temperatures aslow as 40°C. This allows your chosen heat pump to work close toits maximum levels of efficiency, which means it will reduce theuser’s energy costs and energy consumption in the way that it wasintended. By contrast, a standard radiator is designed to beefficient at higher temperatures, 45°C and above, whichautomatically reduces the heat pump’s efficiency by more than10%. In addition the size of the radiator has to be increasedsignificantly to cope with the lower system temperatures.
SAP* calculation comparison
An example SAP calculation shows that using a combination of anair source heat pump with a fan convector in a new build orexisting property, should show a reduction of at least 12% inrunning costs (and carbon usage) when compared with a radiatorand air source heat pump, and that using a fan convector in thisway achieves close to the efficiencies obtained by installing under-floor heating.
*The Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) is the UK Government'srecommended method system for measuring the energy rating ofresidential dwellings.

The LST solution for all properties under the Registered Homes Act 1984.
Smith’s Caspian LST fan convector fully complies with the NHS Estates Health GuidanceNotes, "Safe hot water and surface temperatures" (formally known as DN4) and itsoperation and compliance has been independently verified by BSRIA.
The Caspian LST is suitable for a range of low level installation projects in any NHSEstates premises including hospitals, clinics, surgeries and other health care premiseswhere heat emitters whose maximum surface temperature does not exceed 43°C arerequired.
Incorporating the latest EC motor technology, the three models (120, 90 and 60) are allhydronic and plumb into any wet two-pipe central heating system whether conventionalor renewable. The Caspian LST delivers heat quickly, efficiently and effectively and thereis also a range of additional controls and accessories available, as required.
Heat Output testing based on BS EN442 using mean water temperature, 18°C entering air temperature, 10 deg temperature drop.

How Hydroflame® works
Hot water from the central heating system passes through aheat exchanger and transfers its heat to the aluminium fins.
Cooler air is drawn in at floor level and used to create theflame-effect. The air is heated as it passes over the heatexchanger, a patented process that creates a realistic flame-effect, and then expelled gently back into the room.
This gives a more even temperature and will heat a room inmuch less time than a traditional panel radiator.
The fan will not come into operation until the central heatingsystem water passing through the heat exchanger reaches 40°C(or the temperature set by the installer). This ensures that coolerair is not circulated at start up and allows Hydroflame to switchon and off automatically in conjunction with the central heatingsystem.
Flame-effect fan convectors are energy efficient and in thehome will add less than £10.00* to your annual heating bill.
Dual models include an electric heating element – ideal in springand summer when you may need a quick warm up but thecentral heating system is switched off.
Note: *based on electricity charged at 15p/kWh.
AssumptionsElectricity charged at 15p per kWh.Hydroflame operating on normal - 1.5kW heat output.Excludes use of electric heating element.

5. Plinth Heaters - Hydronic
Space SaverA highly energy efficient fan convector that fits neatly into the plinth of a kitchen unit.Space Saver eliminates the need for conventional radiators. And, as its name implies, thisbrings considerable space saving benefits - more room for extra storage units, more worksurfaces, more space for kitchen appliances.
Space Saver is used predominantly for domestic applications where the ingenious plinth-mounting feature makes it ideal for heating kitchens and utility rooms. Plinth mounting alsomakes Space Saver ideal for certain non-domestic applications such as reception areas, changing rooms, libraries, etc.
*Room sizes given in cubic metres for general guidance only based on normal heat output (80ºC) for domestic applications - always calculate heat losses. Heat outputs tested inaccordance with BS4856 using entering water temperature and 340 l/h (75gph) flow rate. Fan-only option operational only when central heating system is switched off. Dualmodels include an electric element which in electric heating mode will emit 1kW of heat.

Glossary
Smith’s Accessories
Wall mounted room thermostat - This accessory measures room temperature and switches off theheater when the set temperature is reached. The thermostat connects directly into either the heater’sterminal block or power supply.
Wall mounted control switch - Allows the product to be controlled from a switch mounted on thewall rather than the product. Linking to the heater is made by replacing the existing switch connectionswith the connections on the control switch.
Flexible hoses - Flexible connections are a convenient way of connecting a heater into your system. They will provide an easy to achieve connection from your first-fix pipe work. In addition they willprovide for a level of expansion and contraction in rigid pipe work and mitigating possible sound andvibration transmission.
Adjustable low temperature cut-out (LTC) - This cut out device allows the user to set the watertemperature (between 30ºC and 90ºC) at which the product will start to emit heat. It is more accuratethan the standard fitted LTC (set at 35ºC) and enables more flexible use with both low systemtemperature heat pumps and higher system temperature boilers including biomass that can produce80ºC flow temperatures.
Plinth - The optional plinth creates an attractive floor standing unit and also conceals the pipe workfrom view. This can also be invaluable where it is necessary to prevent contact with heating pipes byvulnerable groups.
External control harness - This accessory allows up to four products to be controlled from a singlepoint. An External Control Harness will be required for each product. Each harness has plug and playconnections.
Proportional Heat Output Controller (PHOC) - This accessory controls the fan speed and hence theheat output of the unit. When the room temperature is below 15ºC the fan speed will run at itsmaximum speed to give fastest heat up time. When the room temperature reaches 15ºC the fan speedand heat output are modulated down progressively as the room temperature increases towards the settemperature.
Thermostat and Auto-Speed control (T1/T2) - This accessory serves two purposes. Firstly, it becomesan integral room thermostat for the unit providing localised control and secondly, the heat output willbe changed according to the temperature in the room. For example, the fan may work on full powerup to 18ºC and above this temperature move to a lower fan speed. Normally the fan speeds used willbe medium and low.
Fresh air inlet spigot - An air inlet spigot is available for 100mm diameter rigid or flexible pipe. Thespigot allows for a portion of air entering the appliance to be fresh air from outside the building. Thisensures an adequate air change rate and improved air quality.
Surface mounting kit - Provides a complete four-sided trim when fitted to a solid ceiling, 135 mm high.
Ceiling tile spacer - Provides semi-recessed profile to match Skyline CT18 when used in ceiling tileframe, 85mm high.
