The figured world that I will be observing over the semester is the film series, The Fast

and the Furious. The Fast and the Furious is produced by Universal Pictures. The series started

in 2001 and is still in progress. The film series is centered on illegal street racing and robbery. I

chose this series because I am interesting in fast cars. Also it has my favorite actors and actresses

in it, Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster. It is really sad

because when I was little I wanted to be a part of that lifestyle. The figured world is street car

clubs and criminals, the artifacts are the cars and tools they use to rob places and the actors are

Brian O’Connor, Dominic Toretto, Letty Ortiz, and Mia Toretto. The purpose of this figured

world is to show a fictional lifestyle of criminals living on the run. They get close to being

arrested and put in prison for life, but they always find a way to get away from the federal

agents. In the sixth film, Dominic and his crew team up with the federal agents to catch Owen

Shaw from stealing a military computer chip. The only way Dominic and his crew would help

would be if they got full pardons. The activities that are acceptable in this figured world is racing

and boosting cars. The forms of communication are talking on cell phones, walkie talkies, and

face-to-face. Being loud is expected during racing, but when they are stealing they are somewhat

quiet. The behaviors that may be inappropriate for this figured world would be turning your back

on family and getting caught by the law. The discourse communities I expect to find during my

observation are criminals, federal agents, street racers, mechanics, mob bosses, and drug lords.

All these discourse communities follow the set guidelines I learned from English 1101.

Observation One

Monday, January 27, 2014

Time: 5:00AM-9:40AM, 10:00AM-12:00PM

Description of the Location: There was not a set location for Fast & Furious. The movie

begins in the Dominican Republic, where Dominic (Vin Diesel) and his team highjack a fuel

tanker. After the high jacking, Dominic leaves his girlfriend, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez)

because the cops are after him and does not want her to be harmed. He goes to Panama City.

While he is in Panama City, Letty goes back to Los Angeles. She goes undercover to help Brian

(Paul Walker), FBI agent, to catch a drug lord and clear Dominic’s name so he can come home.

While she is undercover, she is murdered. While Dom is in Panama City, he gets a call from his

sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster) saying Letty was murdered. Dom risks getting caught by the FBI

by returning to Los Angeles to find who murdered his girlfriend. Brian goes undercover to find

out information on the drug lord, Campos/Braga (John Ortiz). The only way to get close to

Braga is to win a street race. When Brian gets to the street race, he sees Dominic. The street

race takes place in Los Angeles. Dominic and Brian both become part of Braga’s team. Braga

wants them to deliver heroin for him between the Mexico-United States border. When they get

the shipment they hide it and make a deal with Campos. When they go to make the “drop” they

realize Campos is Braga. Braga escapes and goes to Mexico. Brian and Dominic go to Mexico

to catch Braga and turn him in.

with set rules would be Braga’s team. Their set rules are following his orders, do not disobey

him, ask no questions, smuggle drugs across the border, and definitely do not turn him into the

many actors in the film, but I chose the ones that are the main actors. The major actors are:

Dominic Toretto: Street racer and hijacker from the United States. Dominic is

wanted for numerous crimes he has committed. When Letty dies, he comes back

to revenge for her death.

Brian O’Conner: A former police officer and street racer from United States.

Brian is a FBI agent trying to take down Braga.

Mia Toretto: Dominic’s sister and Brian’s ex-girlfriend. She makes sure

Dominic knows when Letty dies.

Letty Ortiz: Dominic’s girlfriend. She dies at the beginning of the movie.

Campos/Braga: A drug lord. He wants to smuggle heroin over the border.

Artifacts: Items/emotions that are significant to actors and help us to determine what their

behaviors are.

Fast cars: Fast cars shows that they are street racers.

GPS: Using a GPS to tell what direction they need to go.

Letty’s Death: Letty’s death is a very emotional part of the movie. Dominic risk

getting caught by the FBI to see Letty’s funereal and the scene of the accident.

Guns: They use guns to display who is in power and also for protection against

Braga and his team.

Discourse Communities: These are groups that have the same common goals and ways of

cooperating.

Street racers: Dominic and Brian are street racers. Each of them have been in

multiple street races. They are street racing now to become part of Braga’s team

to get revenge for Letty’s death and lock him up. There are many street racers.

They all want to win and become the best.

Criminals: Dominic is a criminal. Dom and his team hijack cars and trucks.

Their common goal is to make money and do not get caught.

FBI Agents: Brian is a FBI agent. He is trying to take down Braga. Their

common goal is to get justice and put the criminals away for life.

Drug Lords: Braga is a drug lord. He wants to smuggle drugs across the border

so he can make money. Their common goal is to not get caught and also to make

money off the drugs they sell.

Literacy Practices: Ways of communicating both written and spoken. It may be nonverbal or

verbal.

Walkie-Talkies: They use walkie-talkies to communicate when driving.

Flirtation: When they are at clubs are the women are all over them.

The Observation for Fast & Furious:

5:00AM – Dominic and Brian leave Los Angeles and head to Mexico. They meet up with Gisele

(Gal Gadot). She is close to Braga and gives them information on where to find Braga in

Mexico.

9:00AM – Braga goes to a church in Mexico. Braga gives him a bag of money. The Priest gives

him a blessing. After the blessing Braga prays.

9:05AM – Dominic and Brian show up. They threaten him. Dominic puts a gun at him and tells

him he is going back across the border. Brian arrests him. Braga’s men go looking for him.

9:10AM – Dominic and Brian head back to the Mexico/United States border. Fenix (Laz

Alonso) goes after Dominic and Brian. Braga’s men show up and start shooting at their cars.

9:15AM – Cars are chasing Dominic and Brian to get Braga back.

9:20AM – Dominic and Brian make it to the tunnels that connect the United States to Mexico.

The tunnels are small and very hard to get away from anyone.

9:25AM – Dominic, Brian, and Fenix are still in the tunnels.

9:30AM – Brian gets out of the tunnel with Braga. Fenix is right behind them. Dominic is still

in the tunnel. Fenix pulls Braga out of Brian’s car.

9:35AM – Brian gets out of his car and Fenix is about to shoot Brian when Dominic comes out

of the tunnel and hits Fenix and kills him.

9:40AM – The cops show up and take Dominic away.

Couple days later

10:00AM – The judge sentences Dominic to twenty-five years in prison.

12:00PM – Brian, Mia, and their crew hijack the bus taking Dominic to prison.

Observation Two

Monday, February 3, 2014

Time: 12:00PM-12:30PM, 6 months later

Description of the Location: The set location for Fast Five is Rio. The movie begins where the

fourth installment ends with Mia (Jordana Brewster) and Brian (Paul Walker) high jacking the

bus taking Dominic (Vin Diesel) to prison. While the federal agents look for them, they flee to

Rio. While Mia and Brian wait for Dom to arrive, they meet up with their friend Vince (Matt

Schulze) to steal cars from a train. Dom arrives with the rest of the crew. While they are

stealing the cars off the train, the DEA agents that are on the train notice and go back to check it

out. Mia gets away leaving Dom and Brian behind. One of the other men kills the three DEA

agents. Dom and Brian crash the car into a river and are taken back to Hernan Reyes (Joaquim

de Almeida). Before they are questioned; they escape and go to their safe house. They examine

the car, that Mia brought back, and notice there is a chip containing Reyes’ criminal world.

Word gets back to the federal agents that DEA agents were killed and Dom and his crew are

blamed. The federal agents send DSS Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) to bring them back to the

US. Hobbs asks for a local officer, her name is Elena Neves (Elsa Pataky). Elena asks Hobbs

why he wanted her on his team. Hobbs said she is motivated because when her husband was

murdered she became a police officer. Hobbs finds their safe house, but is too late because

Reyes’ men ambushed the house and Dom, Mia, and Brian escape. Once they escape, they come

up with a plan to steal Reyes’ money and start a new life. They organize a team to perform a

heist. The team consists of Han (Sung Kang), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Chris Bridges),

Gisele (Gal Gadot), Leo (Tego Calderon), and Santos (Don Omar).

Vince: Vince is Dom’s childhood friend. He sets up the job to steal the cars from

the train, which does not turn out as planned.

Gisele: Gisele is a formal Mossad agent. She is not afraid to fight. She becomes

Han’s love interest.

Leo: Leo was on Dom’s team in the Dominican Republic. He does the dirty

work with Santos.

Santos: Santos was on Dom’s team in the Dominican Republic. He helps Leo

with the dirty work.

Reyes: Reyes is a coldblooded drug lord acting as a legitimate business man in

Rio.

Hobbs: Hobbs is a DSS agent. He was asked to go find Dom, Brian, and Mia

and bring them back to the US.

Elena: Elena is a police officer in Rio. She became a police officer after her

husband was killed. She becomes part of Hobbs’ team because he says she knows

Rio better than anyone. She becomes Dom’s love interest.

Police cars: They use police cars to blend in so the cameras do not see it is them.

Binoculars: They use binoculars to see from far away without being noticed.

Remote control car with a camera: Roman brings the remote control car in a

box to the police station in Rio as evidence (the police do not know what is in the

box). The officer takes the box to the evidence room where the vault with the

money is. Tej uses the remote control to drive the car around the room to see

what the vault looks like.

Blueprint of the police station: The team uses the blueprint to see where the

vault is and plan a way to steal the money.

Tracker: They use a tracker to track Hobbs’ car.

The Observation for Fast Five:

12:00PM – Hobbs arrests Dom and his crew. While they are going to the airport to meet up with

the US Marshall, they get ambushed by Reyes’ men. Hobbs starts shooting at them. Elena cuts

Dom and his crew. Dom and his team save Hobbs by killing Reyes’ men. While fighting Vince

gets shot in the side. Vince tells Dom that he needs to meet his son Dominic. Dom promises

Vince he will. Vince dies.

12:05PM – They head back to the safe house. Dom tells the team they are still going through

with the plan. Most of them are not happy because Vince just died and they do not think it is

safe. Hobbs tells Dom he will help with the mission. Then everyone follows and continues with

the plan. Reyes’ tripled the security at the police station.

12:10PM – Hobbs crashes into the wall with the vault. Dom and Brian pull up and hook cables

to the vault onto their cars. Hobbs and Elena are shooting at the police. Dom and Brian start

driving which breaks the wall and sets the vault free. They start driving down the road with the

safe behind them. Police are following them. Mia is telling Dom and Brian which way to go.

The vault is destroying everything in its way.

12:15PM – They are still driving trying to get away from the cops. Mia is telling them how

much time they have. Police are wrecking all over the streets. Police start shooting at them.

The police are gaining on them fast. Han and Roman show up and start wrecking the other

police cars. Their window of time has increased to ten seconds.

12:20PM – Reyes and his men follow them. Dom and Brian are still driving, but they cannot go

anywhere because they are on a bridge. Brian says there are too many cops and they will not

make it. Dom says that he is right and they will not, but he will. Brian says he is not leaving

him. Mia tells them just to let the vault go. Dom says Brian is a father and he needs to cut loose.

Dom cuts Brian’s cable loose. Brian is pissed. Dom revs the engine and starts driving head on

towards Reyes and his men. He is swerving around so the vault hit the cop cars in his way.

12:25PM – Reyes’ men start shooting at Dom. Dom swerves so hard that the vault rolls around

to the front of the car and takes out one of Reyes’ men’s car. Dom jumps out of his car because

the vault starts to pull it. Dom’s car crashes into the car Reyes is in. One of Reyes’ men try to

kill Dom, but Brian came back and kills him before he shots Dom. Hobbs shows up and shoots

Reyes in the chest. Hobbs gives Dom and his team twenty-four hours to get out of town, but the

money stays with him. Dom and Brian leave before Hobbs opens the vault. Hobbs opens the

vault and there is no money in it.

12:30PM – Leo, Santos, and Gisele have the vault with the money in it. When Dom and Brian

had the ten second window they unhooked the vault from their cars and put it inside a garbage

truck that Gisele was driving. Then Leo and Santos hook a different vault onto Dom’s and

Brian’s car. They go back to the safe house. Tej unlocks the vault. The vault has $100 million

and everyone gets $11 million of that.

6 months later

Dom gives Vince’s share of the money to Vince’s wife. Leo and Santos go to a casino in

Monaco. Tej builds a garage to fix cars in. Roman spends his money on cars and luxury items.

Han and Gisele go to Berlin. Brian and Mia settle down on a tropical beach. Dom and Elena

live near them too. Brian challenges Dom to a race to see who the better driver is.

8 months later

Hobbs gets a file on his desk. When he looks at it, he sees it is Letty. His colleague asked if he

believes in ghosts.

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

Time: 8:55PM-9:30PM, 3 months later

Description of the Location: The set location for Fast and Furious 6 is in London and Spain.

The movie begins where the fifth installment ends with Brian (Paul Walker) and Dom (Vin

Diesel) racing. Mia (Jordana Brewster) gives birth to a baby boy named Jack. Hobbs (Dwayne

Johnson) shows up at Dom’s house asking for his help. Hobbs shows Dom the file with Letty’s

(Michelle Rodriguez) picture in it. Dom is in shock because she was dead. Dom tells Hobbs it is

a deal. Dom goes to tell Brian about Letty. Brian says that he is coming with him. Dom calls

up his old team consisting of Han (Sung Kang), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Chris Bridges),

and Gisele (Gal Gadot). Hobbs has a new partner named Riley Hicks (Gina Carano). Hobbs

told the team that if they pull this off they get full pardons. While in London, they fight Shaw’s

team around the city. Brian goes back to the US undercover to get information from Braga (John

Ortiz) about Letty’s “death.” Shaw and his team go to Spain. While in Spain Dom’s team take

down Shaw.

The Observation for Fast & Furious 6:

8:55PM – Hobbs arrests Shaw and his men. The team thinks everything is over. They talk about

what they are going to do after they get full pardon.

9:00PM – Hobbs questions Shaw. Hobbs tells Dom he needs to hear what Shaw has to say.

Shaw tells them that they have not won. He told Brian to call Mia. Shaw’s team took Mia.

Brian hits Shaw because Mia is at harm. They cut Shaw loose and give him the computer chip.

Hobbs tells Dom that once they let Shaw go it is over. Hobbs and his girlfriend Riley leave with

each other. Riley is a dirty cop. That is why Shaw knows everything about Dom’s crew.

9:05PM – Shaw calls his men to kill Mia, but Tej blocks the signal. Dom and his team go after

Shaw and his team. They are driving down an airstrip. A huge cargo plane comes down to help

Shaw get away. Dom and his crew crash into Shaw’s men’s car. Riley tries to shoot Mia, but

Dom hits her and starts shooting at everyone. Mia runs. Dom’s crew tries to keep the plane

from taking off. Letty and Riley fight. Shaw is going after Mia.

9:10PM – Brian fights Shaw. Dom knocks out Shaw before he shoots Brian. Mia and Brian

drive out of the plane. Dom’s team shoots at the wings with a harpoon to keep it from taking off.

Hobbs helps Dom fight Shaw and one of Shaw’s men. The plane starts lifting up off the ground.

They are still fighting each other.

9:15PM – Letty and Riley are still fighting. Hobbs gives Letty a harpoon to shoot Riley. Letty

tells Riley she chose the wrong team. The plane is starting to take off. Gisele is fighting one of

Shaw’s men. She is about to fall off the car and Han saves her, but the guy tries to kill Han so

she lets go and shoots at the guy and falls to the ground. She dies. Han gets mad and kills the

guy. Hobbs and Letty jump out of the plane onto Roman’s car. Dom goes to get the computer

chip in Shaw’s car. Shaw falls out of the plane and dies. The plane crashes.

9:20PM – Dom is still in the plane while it is crashing and exploding. Dom drives a car through

the plane but crashes and gets caught in the debris off the plane, which is on fire. The rest of the

crew is safe.

9:25PM – They watch for Dom. Dom comes walking out of the fire. Letty walks up to him and

hugs him. Mia notices Gisele is gone. Han breaks down in tears.

1327. Roman and Tej are confused. 1327 is the house number of Dom’s house in Los Angeles.

3 months later

The team has full pardons. They are back in Los Angeles. They are cooking dinner for their

barbeque. Mia and Brian show Jack around the house. Han tells them he is going to Tokyo.

Hobbs comes to the house to give them their papers.

Tell me about your criminal lives. How has it affect your lifestyle?

Dom: I live my life a quarter mile at a time. Nothing else matters. For those ten seconds

or less, I am free. I have been a criminal for a while now. I have high jacked trucks and

stolen money. My life has changed dramatically. I was always running from the law.

When Hobbs asked me and my team to help him with a mission, I was hesitant but he

promised to give us full pardons.

Brian: I never use to be a criminal, but once you fall in love with someone who is

related to a criminal things change. I was an undercover cop when I met Mia and Dom.

My job was to bring Dom in, but I could not do that to Mia. I lost my job. The years

moved on and I became a FBI agent after helping the police in Miami with an undercover

job. While I was an FBI agent, I went undercover again and helped arrest a drug lord.

While I was undercover Dom showed up and the FBI wanted me to bring him in also. I

told them Dom could help us if they gave him full pardon. After we brought the drug

lord into custody, they did not let Dom go free, so I left the bureau. I left the US with

Mia and Dom and we did another heist in Rio. During the heist, Mia told me she was

pregnant. After we pulled of the robbery, we had our son Jack. My life has gone from

good to bad. People tell me I am a corrupt cop. I never thought I would be a criminal. It

is a different feeling when you are on the other side of the law.

Tell me about the day you found out Letty died.

Dom: When Mia called me about Letty’s death, I was in Panama City. I was

heartbroken. I risked getting caught to go to her funeral, but I know she would do the

same for me.

Brian: When I found out about Letty’s death, I felt guilty. I was the one who told her to

go undercover. It was my fault she died.

Tell me about the concept of “Ride or Die”.

Dom and Brian: The concept of “Ride or Die” is you are family no matter what goes

on, through thick or thin, and through it all the good and the bad. You never turn your

back on family.

Dominic

Give an example of one of the heist you have done.

Dom: The best heist I have done would be the one in Rio. That was the biggest and

hardest heist that I have ever done. The reward of the heist was big to.

Tell me about your team and why you choose these people.

Dom: My team is made up of people I can trust, people that know what to do in the

given situations, and knows how to drive fast cars. I choose these people because I can

trust them and they are loyal.

When you were in the Dominican Republic why did you leave Letty?

Dom: I left Letty because I wanted her to be safe. I did not want her to be in this

lifestyle anymore. When I was told she was dead, I blamed myself because I hurt her

more than anything by leaving her.

Tell me about the street racer life. How does someone become a part of it?

Dom: Being a street racer is a lifestyle. You have to know everything about cars. It is

not that you become a part of the street racer life; it is that you understand everything

about cars and racing. You have to understand the concepts of winning. You can be a

good racer, but if you do not win then there is no point in being a racer. Winning is

winning, no matter is you win by an inch or a mile.

Brian

Tell me about how you became an FBI agent.

Brian: I became an FBI agent after helping the police in Miami with a job that they had.

I was not a cop anymore at that time because I lost my job in Los Angeles. Becoming an

FBI agent is not easy.

Tell me about being an FBI agent.

Brian: Being an FBI agent was interesting. It is definitely different than being a cop.

How hard was it to be undercover?

Brian: It was hard going undercover because you have to live a totally separate life and

you cannot get too attached.

Mia

How hard is it to sit at home while you know your brother is running from the law?

Mia: It was really hard to sit at home knowing any minute I could get a call saying he

was dead or saying he is going to prison.

Tell me about yours and Brian’s relationship.

Mia: I met Brian in Los Angeles. Once he told me he was a cop and had to turn my

brother in I was furious. I loved him and for him to lie made me mad. Then we Letty

died, he knew Dom was coming back, so he asked me questions about Dom. Brian and

Dom teamed up to find the guy who killed Letty. When Dom was going to prison, Brian

left the bureau because they promised Dom could go free if he helped. When he did that

I was so proud of him. When we went to Rio for the robbery, I told him I was pregnant

and he was so happy. We have a son named Jack.

Tell me about the day you found out about Letty.

Mia: When I found out about Letty, I did not know what to do. She was a sister to me.

It felt like my whole world came crashing down that day. I knew I had to call Dom to tell

him.

Letty

Tell me about the day you woke up in the hospital.

Letty: Waking up in the hospital and not knowing what was going on was scary. No one

could give me answers. Shaw was the only person who visited me in the hospital and I

did not even know who he was.

How was it working for Owen Shaw?

Letty: He is very interesting. He only thinks of himself. When someone dies he does

not care. I did not like working for Shaw after a while because he could care less what

Tell me about your first meeting with Dominic since your accident.

Letty: My first meeting with Dominic was interesting. He thought I remember him, but

after my accident I lost my memory. Dom was trying to take down my boss Owen Shaw

at the time, so when he noticed it was me he followed me instead of Shaw. We stopped

our cars and got out. The first thing I did was shoot him. Then I left.
