Welcome to the Aggregates & Roadbuilding 2011 Buyers’ Guide, a stand-alone directory and product guide to all that matters in the rock-to-road sector. As is the case with all the

guides we’ve published over the past quarter century, this one is a com-prehensive list of equipment and services suppliers. In it you’ll find the familiar suppliers you’ve used over the years. But you’ll also find some new suppliers, as once again we’ve added a host of new names to the 400- plus dedicated players.

Whether you’re looking for tool or equipment rental, gas engines, pumps, mini excavators, concrete pumps, trailers, screening media, asphalt heaters, or myriad other gear, you’ll find brand new listings from suppliers you likely have not considered before. Have a look, find a few fresh names, and see what they can do to improve your operations or reduce your overhead.

You’ll also find a bit more in the 2011 buyers’ guide, as Aggregates & Roadbuilding continues to add to the contents in this extra issue. There are few things contractors buy more of than pick-up trucks, with a standard fleet for larger companies now topping 50 full-size and heavy-duty pickups. In this guide you’ll find well-known truck writer Howard Elmer’s complete review of full-size pickups, with all the 2011 models and their features detailed. You’ll also find conveyor belt cleaning and maintenance tips from the industry experts at Flexco.

Enjoy the guide, and stash it away for future reference. It is also available for download at www.rocktoroad.com should you misplace your copy or want to share with a colleague. If you notice an error or missing listing, do not hesitate to let us know.

Model year 2011 in the truck world is stamped Heavy Duty as each of the Big Three has released new HD iron over the past six months. New bodies, engines and transmissions

are the order of the day, with payload and towing capacities climbing ever higher. In contrast, the half-ton market seems to be doing very little for the coming model year. However, while some manufactur-ers love to be first to the media (Ford), others hold back until the last minute on news updates (Toyota). This roundup is as current as it can be, but surprises are always a possibility; and there already are a few.

If there is one theme for the coming year, it’s the change/addition of engine choices to the 1500-series market. In fact, I see a new trend emerging in the pickup truck market that I’m calling “echo-market-ing.” Over the past few years, new generations of pickups debut with new tin and interiors, but little in the way of mechanical upgrades; then, two years later – bam! Here come the new powertrains – or the echo of the original release. And, as usual, Ford leads the pack.

2011 Ford F-150With a major redesign in 2009, the F-series moves into the 2011 model year with the same tin but a host of changes under the hood. Currently only available with a selection of V8s, the F-series is bringing four new engines into play for next year’s truck. First will be a 3.7-litre V6 and a 5.0-litre V8, both of which feature twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT). There will also be a version of the 6.2-litre V8 avail-able (this is to be the new base engine in the 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty and is also available in the Raptor), but probably the biggest en-gine news is the addition of a 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost engine to the lineup.

Ford claims that fuel economy will be “best-in-class” across its

F-series lineup with these new engines. However, the EcoBoost engine, in particular, is rated to improve the 2011 F-150’s fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent, versus the outgoing 2010 F-150.

This EcoBoost engine has power comparable to a naturally aspirated V8, yet the fuel economy is very much that of a V6. Technically speak-ing, this is a result of new materials and engine design – already avail-able in other Ford vehicles – but now modified to work in its bestselling model as well. Along with the engine upgrades, all F-series pickups will now come equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission that will include SelectShift.

Introduced for the 2010 model year, the Ford Raptor is an F-150 with a special suspension, a new body and purpose-built powertrain. This special vehicle team (SVT) creation gives the Raptor a high-per-formance off-road capability while still keeping it street-legal and de-cent to drive on pavement. The Raptor comes in one body style only – Super Cab with a five-foot bed. This combination gives the truck the right “look” as well as maintaining a shorter wheelbase that is vital for getting it over rough terrain. It should be continued into the coming year.

2011 GMC SIERRA1500/SIERRA DENALI 1500These trucks are rated a Best Buy by Consumers Digest. Certainly that’s an advantage to building a pickup for several years and clocking enough history to give a publication like Consumers Digest a fair shot at evaluating the product. Of course, this is because the current GMT 900 model half-ton pickup that was introduced in 2007 is moving into the next model year with few changes – few that we know about right now, anyway.

One rumour I can probably put to rest is the demise of GMC. I’ve wondered for a while if the recent unpleasantness at GM might force an amalgamation of the Chevy and GMC truck lines. But during the recent HD Chevy introduction, I was told by more than one exec that GMC is considered a core brand and will be protected. At the very least, this means that the choice of WT (work truck) trim or SLE (upscale trim) will continue to be offered. This feature continues to be unique to GM – go with a cabin designed for on-the-job durability or opt for a Sierra SLT or Denali with luxury-inspired interior comforts and conveniences.

For 2010, the Sierra 1500's 4.8-litre, 5.3-litre and 6.2-litre V-8 en-gines offer E85 capability, while the 4.8-litre and 5.3-litre engines now feature variable valve timing. A six-speed automatic transmission is added to regular and extended cab models with the 5.3-litre V8 (pre-viously only offered on crew cab models), and all 5.3-litre-equipped models feature a standard 3.08 axle ratio that reduces fuel consump-tion. These engines are all FlexFuel capable (E85 is 85 per cent etha-nol and 15 per cent gasoline). Other changes include new side curtain airbags and seat-mounted side airbags – now standard on all models.

An addition of note for 2011 is the All Terrain Package. It features such components as Z71 Off-Road Suspension, an automatic locking rear differential, extended-travel Rancho shock absorbers and skid plates.

2011 DODGE RAMThe Dodge Ram is another truck where new engine changes are expected to match the excellent new tin and interior that we got in 2009. How-ever, it does not seem that 2011 is going to be the year for this. So, for the foreseeable future the durable 5.7-litre Hemi V8 continues to be the main engine offering. This Hemi comes with MDS and VVT and makes 390-horsepower and 407 pound feet of torque. The five-speed automatic is still the only transmission choice. There are two V6 offerings; how-ever, looking at the fuel numbers I’d wonder why they bother. For 2010, they’ve added an Interactive Decel Fuel Shut Off (iDFSO). This system shuts off the fuel to the engine while it’s decelerating – then starts it again when the accelerator is pressed. This should improve fuel economy; how-ever, it will have a greater impact when the base engines are upgraded.

Some of the nicer interior features on the Ram are leather-faced low back front bucket seats (that can be heated and ventilated) and a fixed centre console with floor-mounted automatic shift lever. Other items of interest are the class exclusive rear multi-link coil suspension and Elec-tronic Stability Program (ESP) with Hill Start Assist and Trailer Sway Control. The 1500 Ram is available with optional 121-litre fuel tank, Class IV hitch, 3.92 axle ratio and an integrated trailer brake controller.

The RamBox (a box-mounted integrated cargo system) continues to be an exclusive offering, and now, for a late 2010 offering, Ram is using it to build a new package called the Ram Outdoorsman. This feature package will include standard trailer-towing upgrades, interior and exterior convenience lighting enhancements, all-terrain tires and underbody protection. This Ram Outdoorsman is available in 1500 (half-ton), 2500 HD (3/4-ton) and 3500 HD single rear wheel (1 ton), Regular Cab, Quad Cab, Crew Cab and Mega Cab; in either four-wheel and two-wheel drive. The RamBox is now capable of holding a fishing rod and gun rack option on RamBox-equipped Ram 1500 trucks.

2011 TOYOTA TUNDRAToyota is notorious for releasing new model information at the very last possible second. In other words, information on its 2011 models is almost impossible to find at this time. However, with the Tundra, we can look at the direction the truck took in 2010 as a sign of things to come. For 2010, Tundra addressed its drinking problem with an all-new 4.6-litre iForce V8 mated to a six-speed automatic. It was debuted at Calgary Auto Show with this much more fuel-efficient engine that still makes 310 horsepower and 327 pound feet of torque. This engine replaces the old 4.7L.

Up front, the 2010 Tundra got a new front bumper and grille combo, while in the rear, a bolder tail lamp design. Also new are must-have items like a retractable step on the rear bumper. New trim packages bring greater choice to the Tundra line with optional features like 20-inch alloy wheels, adjustable headlamp levelling system, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, power sliding rear window, steering wheel audio con-trols, Integrated XM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth, USB audio input, navi-gation system, and power tilt steering wheel.

Other standard equipment that was added to the Tundra includes

Polydeck screen media panels, in either polyurethane or rubber, can reduce noise pollution from your screen decks by up to 50%

compared to steel media. In an independent test, wire cloth and punch plate produced approximately 105 decibels of noise

while Polydeck synthetic screen media produced around 96 decibels. To the human ear, that’s a 50% reduction. That’ll

make your neighbors happier, not to mention your plant personnel.

How Does 50% Noise Reduction Sound?

2011 NISSAN TITANThere is no news yet on the 2011 Titan; however, for 2010 there were a few minor changes. Both the 2010 Titan Crew and King Cabs now include standard Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) as well as curtain side-impact with rollover sensor and front seat side- impact airbags.

As for engines, the Titan once again re-turns with the same 5.6L V8 that was last upgraded in 2007 to 317 horsepower and 385 pound feet of torque. Titan’s standard five-speed automatic transmission was de-signed especially for heavy-duty truck use, says Nissan, but among the pickups included in this preview it is now the oldest and least changed. With the recent release of a number

of small crossover car models, it raises the question of whether Nissan intends to stay in the truck business. However, just this spring, they released the NV2500, a work van that has a distinctly pickup-like front end. It is also built at the same plant as the trucks. Ei-ther way, this is currently all just speculation.

The 2010 Titan is offered in four models – XE, SE, PRO-4X and LE; two cab styles – King Cab and Crew Cab; three bed lengths – 5'6" and 7' for Crew Cab, and 6'6" for King Cab; and 4x2 and 4x4 drive configurations.

A nice Nissan feature is the standard spray-on bed liner that covers the bed and inner tailgate, preventing scratch damage and corro-sion. It is covered by the Nissan warranty.

When you buy a product, you ex-pect it to perform as well on day 365 as it did on the first day you

installed it. You don’t have time to spend wondering if or when it will break, and you certainly don’t have time to buy a new one. The truth is that maintenance can make all the difference with equipment, and this is espe-cially true with belt conveyor cleaners.

When it comes to the aggregates busi-ness, where equipment is subjected to harsh materials and weather, belt cleaners are an important part of keeping systems clear and running. Downtime is simply not an option. But while the cleaners are busy maintaining your belt, what are you doing to keep your cleaners running smoothly?

Why maintain belt cleaners?Over the years, advances in belt cleaner technology have made them not only easier to use, but also easier to maintain. Maintain-ing cleaners enhances the performance of the actual cleaner as well as that of the other components in your system. Keeping an eye on the cleaners also extends the life of the cleaners, the belt, and your splices. Properly maintained cleaners are less likely to cause

damage to belts and fasteners in comparison to cleaners that are installed and ignored until it’s time to replace them.

Your cleaners and your budgetYou would be hard-pressed to find a business in the world that isn’t trying to cut costs in this economy. That’s why it’s more important than ever to maintain the systems you already have. There simply isn’t money in the budget to replace something if it breaks, or time to withstand a major shutdown that could have been prevented.

Carryback costs, for example, can affect your overall budget multiple times. Mainte-nance costs, along with safety costs top the list, but the cost of the material wasted and the housekeeping costs to remove the mate-rial can also be pricey.

Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers’ As-sociation (CEMA) conservatively estimates carryback to be as high as three tons per week, given a 60-inch-wide belt travelling at 800 feet per minute. Over the course of a full year, that adds up to 150 tons of material for only one belt.

Poor belt cleaning also contributes to after-the-fact maintenance costs related to belting, pulleys, idlers, etc. While good maintenance

and quality replacement parts cost a little more up front, they can be worth it in the long run.

Maintaining your cleanersWhen approaching cleaner maintenance, there are three simple principles to remem-ber: Clean it, inspect it, tension it.

Clean it: This may sound obvious, but the first rule of thumb with cleaners is to re-move any debris from the blade and tension springs. Tensioners can’t do their jobs with debris stuck in them and removing material buildup from blades will make them much more effective. Plus, a dirt-free cleaner is much easier to inspect.

Inspect it: A simple visual inspection can do wonders for a cleaner. You can check to see that everything is in working order and replace any damaged components. When it comes to your blades, inspect the visual wear lines to ensure that the blades have not reached the end of their lives. As you inspect the blades, make a note how close you are to complete wear and the approximate amount of time it took to get to that point.

Tension it: Tension the blade to accom-modate the blade wear. This is done quickly and easily by referencing the tension check

decal and measuring the tension spring to en-sure the blade is properly tensioned.

A complete maintenance planIt’s important to think of cleaner maintenance as a plan, instead of a specific task. In addi-tion to regular maintenance, there are two other aspects that can enhance the perfor-mance of your belt conveyor system – quality of products and replacement parts.

Choosing the right products and replace-ment parts is integral, not only to your clean-ing system, but to your entire conveyor oper-ation. Taking the time to consider factors like blade life, the material path of your product, and the ease of a tension check will save you time and money.

Look for a blade with a long wear life. Of-tentimes, this is determined by taking note of the material from which the blade is made. In the case of urethane, the quality of the urethane and the volume of urethane found on the blade is a key to long wear life. Keep-ing an eye on the path your material actually takes on your belt can also save your cleaner. A blade that follows the material path is the most efficient because it wears evenly, instead of wearing in the centre. Utilizing a blade that covers only the material path boosts cleaning performance and extends the life of the blade.

When it comes to visual tension checks, the philosophy is simple. The easier it is to check the tension, the more the crew will in-spect it. Over- or under-tensioning the blade can lead to shortened blade life (as much as 20 per cent less). Improperly tensioned blades compromise cleaning efficiency and blade life, putting a dent in the budget.

A complete systemIn a belt conveyor system, a myriad of products are working together toward a common goal – to keep things moving and get the job done. While belt cleaners are a small part of a much larger system, a healthy conveyor system be-gins and ends with cleaning and maintenance.

Consider your entire system when putting your belt cleaner maintenance plan into effect. It’s a good rule of thumb to inspect and perform maintenance on all of your conveyor system components as part of an overall maintenance plan. After all, being proactive can save you time, money, and a headache down the road.

To find out how to turn maintenance chal-lenges into cost savings, log on to the Flexco Trade-In Trade-Up website at www.tradeu-pandsave.com and download the belt main-tenance brochure.

For ease of reference, Aggregates & Roadbuilding’s Annual Buyers’ Guide is divided into two sections. The first sec-tion is an alphabetical listing of Manufacturers, Dealers and

Consultants supplying the industry. If you are looking for a particu-lar company, refer to this section.
