academic heraldry
The wearing of caps, gowns and hoods at college and university functions dates to the Middle Ages, when they were first worn by monks and students for warmth in the damp and drafty 12th-century castles and halls of learning. Through the years, their style and color have come to represent specific meanings.
Gowns for the bachelor’s degree have a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed and is primarily distinguished by its long pointed sleeves.
The gown for the master’s degree has the same yoke effect as that of the bachelor’s but is designed so that it may be worn open or closed. The back of the sleeve is oblong and cut square with the front part carrying a cutaway arc.
Gowns for the doctoral degree are also worn open or closed. They have long velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the bell-shaped sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the field of learning to which the degree pertains.
Certain changes were made in 1960, and some colleges and universities have departed from the traditional black and adopted gowns in the primary colors of the institutions.
Caps can be of serge, broadcloth, cotton, rayon or silk, and for the doctoral cap only, of velvet. The tassel of the doctoral cap can be of gold thread. The caps normally are mortarboards in shape, although women can wear soft, square-topped caps.
The hood gives color and definitive meaning to the academic costume. The hood is of varying sizes for master’s and doctoral degrees and is made of material to match the gown. It is lined with the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is bordered with velvet of the proper width and color to indicate the field of learning.
STudenTS’ aTTire Traditionally, student robes are black. The inside of the hoods are burgundy and white in color. The velvet border on the hood of undergraduates is golden yellow, symbolic of the technology degree. The velvet border on the hood of graduate candidates is drab, symbolic of the business, management or commerce degree.
STudenT governmenT aSSociaTion PinS The pins worn by the graduates are a gift from the Student Government Association and presented to graduates of Vaughn College. The College seal is incorporated into the pins. Pewter pins are for associate degree graduates, gold pins are for bachelor’s degree graduates and bronze pins are for master’s degreegraduates.
color cordS
Graduates who have completed their degrees with academic honors are attired with cords: Bronze cords are cum laude; silver cords are magna cum laude; and gold cords are summa cum laude. Students who have completed the Leadership Academy program are recognized with burgundy and white cords. Graduates who served our country in the military service are recognized with red, white and blue cords to honor their service.
