The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is proud of the accomplishments celebrated in today’s commencement ceremony. We recognize and applaud the determination of the graduates to complete their studies. We also recognize and appreciate the help families and friends have given to make this graduation possible.

The completion of a program of study is significant. It commemorates the end of one important activity while signaling unlimited opportunities for the future. It is in this spirit of hope and optimism that today we congratulate those who have now completed their studies at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Our newest graduates represent a rich tradition of hands-on collaborative learning, academic excellence and personal growth that extends back to the date the University was founded in 1871. It is this tradition that links our newest alumni with prior graduates, who are actively enriching the civic, business, charitable and political sectors of our global community.

As a regional center for the celebration and promotion of knowledge, culture and innovation, our University is an integral part of the broader community. With the fresh effort and focus of today’s graduates who join us in this broader role, we envision even more opportunities that will connect our University with the region we so proudly serve.

It is my honor as the 11th chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh to extend this special recognition on behalf of the faculty, staff, students and alumni of the University.

Sincerely,

Andrew J. Leavitt, Ph.D. Chancellor, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh was founded as the state’s third normal school in 1871. The Oshkosh State Normal School became the state’s foremost teacher-training institution.

In later years, as the focus and curriculum expanded, the institution underwent several name changes. A graduate school was added in 1963. In its centennial year of 1971, President Roger Earl Guiles guided UW Oshkosh’s merger into the Wisconsin system.

Today, UW Oshkosh prepares students for fulfilling lives and challenging careers with 60 undergraduate majors and more than 35 master’s degree, certificate, doctoral and graduate achievement programs spanning a wide array of disciplines.

Chancellor Andrew J. Leavitt leads this vibrant educational institution under a new strategic plan with a renewed focus on research. The picturesque and environmentally conscious campus covers 173.5 acres and is home to four colleges — Business, Education and Human Services, Letters and Science, and Nursing. UW Oshkosh’s focus on teaching is evident in its distinction of having won 10 UW System Regents Teaching Awards of Excellence.

UW Oshkosh is committed to student success, academic excellence, community engagement and economic development.

The University of Wisconsin System is governed by the Board of Regents, an 18-member board appointed by the governor. The board, in turn, appoints the system president, the chancellors of the 13 universities, the chancellor of Extension and UW Colleges, and the deans of the 13 colleges. The current system president is Ray Cross.

The board is currently comprised of Regent Vice President John R. Behling, Mark J. Bradley, José M. Delgado, Lisa Erickson, Tony Evers, Margaret Farrow, Michael M. Grebe, Eve Hall, Tim Higgins, Tracey L. Klein, James A. Langnes III, Edmund Manydeeds, Regent President Regina Millner, Janice Mueller, Drew Petersen, Bryan G. Steil, S. Mark Tyler and Gerald Whitburn.

to Build Healthy Communities—On Campus and Beyond

The grant dollars, totaling more than $234,000, helped UW Oshkosh continue to fund initiatives at the University-run Living Healthy Community Clinic (LHCC) as well as expand violence prevention education and increase crisis advocacy for student victims through a partnership between the UW Oshkosh Counseling Center and the social work department.

The funds awarded to the LHCC were intended to help community-based providers serve their communities with better access to healthcare.

On campus the funds helped develop and launch a violence prevention project and increase crisis advocacy for student victims of sexual violence.

The project—called CALM, which stands for caring, action, leadership and mindfulness—is a partnership between the social work department, the UW Oshkosh Counseling Center and REACH Counseling, which engages students living on campus through public education and intervention efforts.

Through CALM two master’s level social work students worked with various areas on campus—within communication classes, residence halls and through the Counseling Center—to talk about and teach violence and prevention, stress management, mental health, effective interpersonal communication and more.

Stephen Kercher, interim director of the Office of Student Research and Creative Activity, believes there are multiple benefits to the presentation of research.

“NCUR affords UW Oshkosh undergraduate students with a unique opportunity to share the results of their research with students and faculty from across the country,” he said.

“In a competitive job market,” he said, “it helps to be able to say in an interview that one’s educational experience went above and beyond the ordinary and that you are the type of individual eager to pursue new challenges.”

Students selected to present their work at NCUR submitted research abstracts which were judged and ranked by a selection committee.

“We are very proud of the fact that so many UW Oshkosh students are doing such great research and were chosen to participate in NCUR,” Kercher said.

The students also had the opportunity to visit their state legislators’ offices.

This spring five University of Wisconsin Oshkosh students joined undergraduates from across UW System in presenting their research posters at the 14th-annual Research in the Rotunda at the state Capitol in Madison.

UW Oshkosh was again honored with Tree Campus USA® recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management. UW Oshkosh has been recognized as a Tree Campus USA since 2010.

At UW Oshkosh there are nearly 50 species of trees on the 173.5-acre campus.

UW Oshkosh achieved the recognition by meeting five standards for sustainable campus forestry required by Tree Campus USA, including establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program and an Arbor Day observance, and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.

Tree Campus USA, a national program launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation, honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation.

University of Wisconsin Oshkosh alumnus Daniel Burrus ‘71, of Hartland, is a thought-leader whose foresight and predictions on future technological trends are sought after by corporate giants worldwide.

While at UWO Burrus became one of the first undergraduate students in the nation to direct a federal research grant. Upon graduating with education and social science degrees, Burrus served as a K-12 science teacher. In the 1970s he began his entrepreneurial journey, launching four businesses and selling each by 1982. Since 1983 he has offered strategy for a host of Fortune 500 companies. Companies ranging from S.C. Johnson and Sons to Microsoft and Disney are among those that have tapped into his insights. In 2009 he founded

a company that pioneered development of a military and emergency responder mobile app.

Burrus has been featured by national and international media, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, PBS, CNN, Fox Business, Bloomberg, Fortune and Forbes. He is the author of six books, and, through his company, Burrus Research, he has spoken to thousands of audiences around the globe representing industries on the “leading edge” of innovation.

Burrus was the recipient of the 2001 UW Oshkosh Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Today he serves as the commencement speaker and will be awarded an honorary doctorate from UW Oshkosh.

Katelyn Olson graduates with a major in communication studies. While at UW Oshkosh Olson worked with the University Studies Program’s Quest III and served as a multimedia intern for the Humans of Oshkosh project. Outside the classroom Olson interned with Waterfest music festival and was a line therapist with Fox Valley Autism. She volunteered her time at a nursing home, granted wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation and cared for animals with the Oshkosh Area Humane Society.

“I encourage each of you to be storytellers. To go out into the world and make your stories happen, and then never be afraid to share them. So much can happen when we reach out and connect to one another,” Olson says.

After graduation Olson is looking to pursue a career in event planning or community relations.

Dana Giannelli graduates with a major in elementary education and a minor in natural science. While at UW Oshkosh, Giannelli served as a preview day tour guide, campus relations ambassador and Titan Gold Corps student ambassador. Giannelli helped fellow students through her work as a peer mentor for the University Studies Program and as a chemistry and biology tutor through the Center for Academic Resources. Outside the classroom Giannelli volunteers and tutors at the Boys and Girls Club of Oshkosh, held positions as the president, vice-president and secretary of the University Honors Student Association and is a member of the University Studies Program Advisory Committee.

“When you finally learn how to swim and navigate the waters of college, you gain independence,” she says. “You’re here today because you conquered the challenges of independence and gained the self-confidence needed to believe in your strengths and improve upon your weaknesses.”

Giannelli is a multi-scholarship award winner and will be working for Teach for America as an elementary school teacher beginning in June.
