COMMEMORATION OF THE LORD’S ENTRANCE INTO JERUSALEM
“At the scheduled time, the congregation assembles in a place distinct from the church from which the procession will move.
The faithful carry palm branches. This procession is not a historical reenactment of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. It is a liturgical opening of the annual celebration of the Christian Passover.
By this procession we profess our faith. We proclaim that by going to his death,
Jesus inaugurated his return to the Father in glory. We keep the whole Paschal journey before our eyes as each step is celebrated.”
–from The Missal of the Roman Catholic Church
Prelude
5:00 Requiem Eliza Gilkyson (b.1950) arr. Craig Hella-Johnson (b.1962) Austin Aquilera, accompanist

I follow the language of lovewherever love is found
for love is my religion and my faith.

Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amore.
Exultemus ut in ipso jucundemur. Timeamus et amemus Deum vivum.
Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero.
Where there is charity and love, God is there. The love of Christ has gathered us together. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Let us revere and love the living God. And from a sincere heart let us love one another.

LITURGY OF THE WORD
A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 50:4-7 I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.
A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians 2:6-11 He humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 22
All who see me deride me, they curl their lips, they toss their heads. “He trusted in the Lord, let God save him, and come to free him if this is God’s friend.” Refrain
Many dogs have surrounded me, a wicked band besets me. They tear holes in my hands and feet and lay me in the dust of death. I can count all my bones. Refrain
They divide my clothes among them. They cast lots for my robe. O Lord, do not leave me alone, my strength, make haste to help me. Refrain
I will tell your name to my people and praise you where they gather. All you who fear the Lord sing your praises, all tribes of Jacob, give your glory. Refrain

All: Sold for gain by your disciples, Handed over to the people, King held captive by his own.
All: Jesus in the garden praying, Fears before your Father laying Yet, obedient to his will.
All: Even Peter now denies you, Claiming even not to know you, Just as you had prophesied.

Rise from death, chosen ones; seeking life in Christ.
All: O sacred Head, now wounded With grief and shame weighed down, Now scornfully surrounded With thorns, thine only crown; O sacred head, what glory, What bliss till now was thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call thee mine.

Adoramus te, et benedicimus tibi:
quia per sanctam crucem tuam redemisti mundum.
We adore you,and we bless youwhom by your Holy Crosshave redeemed the world.
When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died; My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God; The vain delights that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.
See from his head, his hands, his feet what grief and love flow mingling down; Did ever such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Noon Lamb of God German Chorale, 1540 arr. F. Melius Christiansen (1871-1955) Mundus & The Basilica Cathedral Choristers
Lamb of God most holy! Who on the cross didst suffer, Patient still and lowly, Thyself to scorn didst offer;
Our sins by Thee were taken, Or hope had us forsaken: Have mercy on us, O Jesu!
At the foot of the cross, there is sorrow. At the foot of the cross, there is love,
flowing down together in a river of salvation, covering all the world with grace.
At the foot of the cross, there is sadness. At the foot of the cross, there is hope,
flowing down together in a river of forgiveness, covering all the world with grace.
Jesus, Man of Sorrows, Jesus, Prince of Peace, on the cross He suffered for our sins release;
bearing all our burdens, sharing all our pain, covering all the world with grace.
