We will use the next five Wednesday night programs for a church-wide Bible study on the Beatitudes entitled, “The Character of a Christian”. A few years ago, I was asked to be the Bible teacher for the World Methodist Evangelism Conference. At the time, I had been studying Matthew 5-7, “The Sermon on the Mount”, a familiar passage to most church going Christians. I decided to teach what I had been pouring over in my study time. For practice, I began teaching it to the Homebuilders Sunday School Class (poor victims!). What I thought would only take 6 weeks ended up lasting almost a year! Needless to say, I fell in love with these chapters. They have had such an impact on me and how I live my life as a Christian. The Beati- tudes ,found in the first few verses of chapter 5, are so fundamental to our understanding of the character traits of those who are in the kingdom of Heaven. We, as Christians, ought to look totally different than the culture around us. I promise you, if you really look deeply into the meaning of Jesus’ words in the Beatitudes, you will be changed! I honestly wish I could get away with teaching this every year because I constantly need to be reminded of what my life and the character I exhibit should look like. Please join us next Wednesday for the first session. Supper starts at 5:45 and the Bible study will begin at 6:15. As always, if you want to join us for supper at 5:45, make your reservations by Monday at 12:00pm. We hope you use this opportunity to reach out to friends both churched and unchurched. Invite them to join us in this 5 week journey, sitting around tables, enjoying one another, and soaking up deeply the Word of God. Don’t forget to bring your Bibles! Grace and Peace, Rev. The Character of a Christian

Next Wednesday night, September 27th, we are trying something new at our church! God desires a relationship with us. That’s why He created us in the first place. When we sinned and broke that relationship, God continued to pursue us. God sacrificed His only Son to make it possible for us to have a relationship with Him again. Jesus demonstrated friendship in the most generous way possible. He showed us the greatest love when He laid down His life for His friends. He went to the cross, not on principle or for a cause, but because of love and wanting to be with us forever.

Friendship is a reflection of the character of God. WEEK 4 Key Question: How can you be a friend this week? At some point in a person’s life, he or she is going to need someone they can trust to help them through it. Kids know what’s happening in their friends’ lives. However, they don’t always know how to help. Through the discussion this week, we hope to help kids come up with simple ideas they can put into practice to encourage those friends no matter what they’re going through. We close out the month with something Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 5:11, So encourage each other with the hope you have. Build each other up. In fact, that is what you are doing, (NIV). When Job experienced trial after trial, his friends decided to help. They didn’t bring meals or tell jokes. Rather, they came along side and grieved with Job. Now, we find out they didn’t always get it right, but for that first week, they let Job know that they were there for him. Bottom Line: Friends encourage one another. Kids might not always know what to say or do when it comes to helping cheer up their friends. We pray they discover that they can encourage each other even if it simply means being a shoulder to lean on. REMINDERS

Soup and Sandwich Saturdays

Again this year, we, the members of

Milledgeville First Methodist, have the opportunity to participate in Soup and Sandwich Saturdays, a community outreach mission. We will collaborate with St. Stephens, First Presbyterian and Flipper Chapel to offer soup and sandwiches every other Saturday to community members onsite at Flipper Chapel. The first date for First Methodist to provide for Soup and Sandwich Saturdays is coming up on October 7th. You can contribute funds for supplies; you can volunteer to make sandwiches and go to Flipper Chapel on a Saturday morning to serve; or you can do both. If you would like to participate, individually or as a group such as a Sunday School class, Church-wide organization, or small group, please contact Nancy Mizelle at 478-451-7713 or [email protected]. Last year many of you were involved in this rewarding experience. Please consider participating again. And those who were not, I encourage you to join us. You will be richly blessed. This past week, youth gathered for new Youth Minister Audrey’s first talk. A new series of study was begun after some great games led by Michael and Logan and some delicious snacks. The first in a series that will last throughout the fall, the focus was on Biblical Family Relationships including obedience and honoring of the Father and Mother as well as offering Grace to siblings.

The new series has been dubbed: #relationshipgoals

Next week the talks will continue with a focus on “How to Build Good Friendships” ( #besties ). The importance of Godly friendships, forgiveness, and how to forgive deep hurts from friends will be discussed. As always, we will meet from 4-6 on Sunday at the Harbor. Bring your friends and questions! Audrey Crocker FUMC Youth Minister (m) 229.308.0124
