Stanton Top Five

Our Collection Services Officer’s top 5 Bromance picks

The chosen by Chaim Potok F/POTO

A beautiful book about the friendship between 2 Jewish

boys set in post WWII Brooklyn. Silence, identity and

an intense game of baseball.

The outsiders by S. E. Hinton YAF /HINT

Don’t be embarrassed to run downstairs to the young

adult area to pick up this classic coming of age story,

where the boys in your gang are your family. Greasers,

rumbles and ultimately hope.

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson

The adventures of Sherlock Holmes F /DOYL

Sherlock. Series 1 DVD 791.457/SHE S.1

There are so many ways to enjoy this iconic bromance:-

the Arthur Conan Doyle original stories (are they as

good after Sherlock returns from the dead?), novels

from the many other authors who have continued their

adventures; and film and television series, both

Victorian and contemporary in setting. Deductions,

logic and a hero only his best friend could put up with.

Knight and Rogue series by Hilari Bell YAF /BELL

Noble knight errant Michael and his snarky squire Fisk

travel their realm righting wrongs and doing good deeds

(Michael’s opinion) and getting into trouble and not

getting paid (Fisk’s viewpoint). Funny, adventurous,

with a touch of the fantastic.

Supernatural TV series DVD 791.457/SUP

Two brothers drive across America fighting supernatural

(funnily enough) forces. Watch as Dean and Sam

argue, die, go to hell (and back) while trying to protect

each other (oh, and the rest of the world as we know it).

Hunters, demons and a 1967 Chevy Impala.

Writers @ Stanton: Back in March!

Due to the ongoing construction work in

the Library during February, the Writers

@ Stanton program will resume in

March. We look forward to seeing you

for another cracking year of ideas,

inspiration and thought- provoking

discussion. Until then, you can revisit

some favourite moments in our podcast

series– check our website for details!

Thursday 2 March, 1pm

Rebecca Huntley

At a time when politics seems

increasingly negative and our society

increasingly divided, 'Still Lucky' shows

that we are more fortunate than we

think, and have more in common than

we know.

Wednesday 8 March, 1pm

Grantlee Kieza

While we know much about the iconic

outlaw Ned Kelly, his mother Ellen Kelly

has been largely overlooked by

Australian writers and historians -

until now. 'Mrs Kelly' is a vivid and

compelling portrait by Grantlee Kieza,

one of Australia's most popular

biographers.

Tuesday 14 March, 1pm

Kate Grenville

Like many, Kate Grenville reacts badly

to the artificial fragrances around us:

other people’s perfumes, and all those

scented cosmetics, cleaning products

and air fresheners. On a book tour in

2015, dogged by ill health, she started

wondering: what’s in fragrance? Who

tests it for safety? What does it do to

people? ‘The Case Against Fragrance’

is based on careful research into the

science of scent and the power of the

fragrance industry.

Wednesday 29 March, 1pm

David Marr

In this timely Quarterly Essay, David

Marr looks at Australia’s brand of the

politics of resentment now sweeping

the world. This is a riveting essay by

one of Australia’s best writers,

examining the peculiar power of the

fearful in this confident and prosperous

nation.
