QuestionWhat would it take for you to turn your back on your best friend?

Imagine… A world war has began. You are the leader of a European country and must decide what to do. You promised other countries you would have their back (alliances). Do you join right in when they pick a fight? Do you wait and see what happens? If you don’t join the war now, you may end up being invaded and have to defend yourself. If you do join now there may be massive casualties, you can be defeated, and lose territory in any treaties. How can you make this decision?

Arms race: countries competing to have the best, newest technology, army, navy, etc…

Alliances Countries created powerful combinations so that no one would attack them. A united front.

Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy (Central Powers)

Triple Entente: Great Britain, France, Russia (Allies)

Serbians wanted their independence, Austria-Hungary took over Bosnia and Herzegovina (which had lots of Serbs), Russia supported Serbian independence….

The spark… Archduke Franz Ferdinand and wife Sophie (heir to the Austria-Hungary throne) visited the capital of newly captured Bosnia: Sarajevo

While visiting, they were shot by a Serbian Nationalist Gavrilo Pricip (19)

Austria used the murder as an excuse to punish Serbia. Austria declared war, Russia took action to defend Serbia, and allies all over Europe were triggered into action….
