Mrs Peavey’s Post

School Matters It was lovely to arrive back to school on Monday to the smiling faces of our children and families. I would like to thank Kim and the SIT team, Sharon, Leanne and Sally for stepping into acting roles over the 3 weeks. On the weekend Trish Edmonds our canteen manager had a surprise wedding, her new name is Mrs Castle. On behalf of the community I would like to wish Trish and her new husband Adam all the best for their future together. Parent and Caregivers’ Survey Due to a low number of responses to our school survey we are extending the date to June 7. Please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RPST12019 . We conduct this survey at the start of Terms 2 and 4 each year. We really want to hear from you, especially parents and caregivers who work and cannot make it into the school on a regular basis. Feedback from our community is very important to us at RPS. The purpose of this survey is to gather your thoughts both positive and constructive about the quality of our school’s programs and services which we offer your learners and your family. What you feel and say about our school is extremely important to us and your input affects how we plan, how we teach and assess your children and how we communicate with you. This year your feedback will be even more important as we make plans for the $3.2 million grant for infrastructure from the State Government. The survey will close on Friday 7 June at 4pm. Coffee, Cake and Conversation (CCC) CCC sessions are coming up in Week 8. We have an evening session as asked for by our parents in the school survey on Thursday 13 June at 6:30pm. We also have 2 day sessions Thursday 13 June at 9am and Friday 14 June at 2:30pm. Absences from School Parents are reminded to inform us of your child’s absence at the start of the day. You can do this through the Updat-ed app, calling or emailing the office or by filling in an absence notification form available at the office

Learning News Daily Exercise sessions Over the last 3 weeks the children have been walking and running every day at 12noon for 10 mins. The children are really enjoying this brain break activity each day. The whole school is mapping the kilometers they are covering and we will be tracking our way around Australia and the World. Athletics Yr 3-6 Tomorrow weather permitting the athletics day for the Yr 3-6 children will be taking place on the North Oval and Athletics track. Currently we have 2 parent volunteer. If you are able to assist from 9am – 1pm please contact the office the children and staff would greatly appreciate your support. NAPLAN This week the Year 3 and 5 children completed the NAPLAN tests. The children have been very calm and have approached the tests well. Well done Year 3 and 5. Thankfully we were not affected by some of the glitches that other schools and states were and we have now completed all of our testing. 2020 Prep Enrolments Prep information sessions and tours will be held on Wednesday May 29th at 6:45pm and Thursday 30th May 9:15am. Tours will also be held on Tuesday 4th June and Wednesday 5th June at 9:15am. If you know of new families please encourage them to attend one of the sessions or tours. Illness We are now at the time of year where we have many nasty illnesses about. Please keep sick children home for their comfort and to protect the rest of the community especially the staff and students from the spread of illness. Please continue to teach your child to cough or sneeze into their elbow, to use and dispose of tissues and to wash their hands regularly. Happy learning

ATHLETICS DAY REMINDER Just a reminder to all students, staff, parents, guardians, grandparents and families that the 3-6 Athletics Day will be held this Friday 24th May at the Athletics Oval starting from 9.00am and finishing at around 1pm. We have 8 staff which is one per activity, so it would be great to get at least one parent per activity as a helper. Ideally, we need 4 for the 100 metres so if we can as much help as possible it would be really appreciated. Jarrod Milsom Sport Co-ordinator

Why are due dates for excursions are so important? All permission forms come with a return date. Once a due date comes the school needs to complete the following;-

Confirm the number of students attending

Pay and conform details with the venue

Confirm transport requirements

Make adjustments to family statements We also need to make sure we have the required first aid and medication requirements for each student attending. For all of the above reasons, we can not take any late excursion permission forms or payment. Payments can be made for most excursions on Qkr, sending cash to school with your child or by visiting the office. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

Dates Of Importance 26 May ‐ National Sorry Day This is a significant day for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and particularly for Stolen Generations survivors. Commemorating ‘Sorry Day’ was one of the recommendations of the Bringing Them Home report, which was tabled in Parliament on 26 May 1997. This report was the result of a National Inquiry into the forcible removal of Indigenous children from their families, communities and cultural identity. The first ‘Sorry Day’ was held in Sydney in 1998 and is now held nationally with memorials and commemorative events that honour the Stolen Generations. For more information visit National Sorry Day Committee

27 May - 3 June ‐ National Reconciliation Week This week is an ideal time for everyone to join the reconciliation conversation and reflect on shared histories, contributions and achievements. It is held annually and is a time to celebrate and build on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. Preceded by National Sorry Day on 26 May, National Reconciliation Week is framed by two key events in Australia’s history, which provide strong symbols for reconciliation: 27 May 1967 – the referendum date when more than 90 per cent of Australians voted to

give the government power to make laws for Indigenous people and recognise them in the census.

3 June 1992 – the historic Mabo decision (see below). For more information visit: National Reconciliation Week

3 June ‐ Mabo Day (part of National Reconciliation Week) Mabo Day marks the anniversary of the High Court of Australia’s judgement in 1992 in the Mabo case. This is a day of particular significance for Torres Strait Islander Australians. Eddie ‘Koiki’ Mabo’s name is synonymous with native title rights. His story began in May 1982 when he and fellow Murray (Mer) Islanders David Passi, Sam Passi, James Rice and Celuia Salee instituted a claim in the High Court for native title to the Murray (Mer) Islands in the Torres Strait. The claim was made against the State of Queensland, which responded by seeking to legislate to extinguish retrospectively any native title on the Islands. This was challenged in the High Court on the grounds that it was inconsistent with the 1975 Racial Discrimination Act. On 3 June 1992 the High Court accepted the claim by Eddie Mabo and the other claimants that their people (the Meriam people) had occupied the Islands of Mer for hundreds of years before the arrival of the British and found that the Meriam people were ‘entitled as against the whole world to possession, occupation, use and enjoyment of lands in the Murray Islands.’ The decision overturned a legal fiction that Australia was terra nullius (a land belonging to no one) at the time of British colonisation. Go in the draw to win with the 2019 Active Living Census

Council is encouraging all households in the shire to take part in the Healthy Heart of Victoria 2019 Active Living Census. The census, which can be filled out online at srcentre.com.au/ALC has also been delivered to more than 117,000 homes in the Loddon Campaspe region. Information obtained in the census will be used by Council to plan recreational and health and wellbeing projects, and will also be shared with community clubs and organisations. Residents who complete the census before Sunday 16 June will go in the draw to win bikes, food and shopping vouchers from a prize pool valued at $12,000. For more information, visit srcentre.com.au/ALC or contact the Active Living Census Helpline on 1800 083 037.

Calling young musicians! Register your interest in

The Bluestone Sessions Do you know a musical teenager in the shire making original music? Encourage them to apply to take part in Council’s new initiative, The Bluestone Sessions–a project for musicians aged 10–25 years of age who live, work or study in the Macedon Ranges. The sessions offer young musicians and band the chance to rehearse and record two original songs, make a professional video clip and perform at a world-class venue in front of a large audience. To find out more or request an application form, email [email protected] or call 5422 0242. Mayor, Cr Janet Pearce said the initiative was a result of findings from the recent Youth Strategy 2018–2028, developed in collaboration with young people in region. “Feedback collected as part of the youth strategy highlighted that young people want to see more live bands here in the shire. The Bluestone Sessions provides an opportunity for that, and also a chance to young people to create connections and develop new skills such as live music recording and performance. There are so many talented young people here in the shire, we’re looking forward for seeing them showcase what they can do as part of this initiative”, she said. Applications to take part in the program close Friday 31 May.

Council celebrates National Reconciliation Week 2019

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is joining in celebrations to mark National Reconciliation Week by presenting a special cinematic event on Thursday 30 May. The award-winning documentary, Undermined: Tales from the Kimberley which is screening at Sacred Heart College in Kyneton offers viewers an insight into one of Australia’s largest areas of untouched wilderness, the Kimberley. Described as a “David and Goliath battle”, the film chronicles the story of Indigenous people’s struggles to protect their land against development by big businesses such as mining, pastoralism and agriculture. Echoing this year’s Reconciliation Week theme, ‘Grounded in Truth, Walk Together with Courage’, the film is told through the stories of the people that live there, examining the possible effects of proposed developments on over 200 remote Indigenous communities in the region. Fresh from screenings at the Melbourne International Film Festival and Brisbane International Film Festival, Undermined: Tales from the Kimberley provides a voice for the often unheard and asks, who really benefits from large-scale development? Undermined: Tales from the Kimberley is showing on Thursday 30 May from 7pm at Sacred Heart College, 94 High Street, Kyneton. Entry is by gold coin donation. Bookings are not necessary. For more information, visit mrsc.vic.gov.au/events or call 5422 0333.
