This is an amazing achievement and a reflection of the outstanding prepara- tion undertaken by the boys under the direction of Mr Paul Keen. Id like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and congratulate the members of this year's most successful team; Aanan Shafiuddin, Lucas Ardika, Allan Hamawand and Siddhartha Subedi. Student Free Day Activities Yesterday, on our Pupil Free Day, it was great to be able to work with all staff about a range of activities and events that are on our upcoming agendas. A major session was to look at the contents of our most recent and successful school review with the intent of identifying key items that well progress into our schools strategic plan which we are seeking to do in the next four years. We also had the opportunity to share with school staff aspects of my recent visit to Paris and Singapore where I had the opportunity to talk about the great things that our school does for our children. I was also able to share feedback I received from a number of the UNESCO Ambassadors who visited our school back in April this year. We visited a really special school, and had a chance to visit their daily lives. The school is reflecting this mul- ticulturalism with children from all over the world, with different religious beliefs and languages. What I saw that actually happens is communication for multi-faith peace through children. Give the privilege to children especially from very young age. A child who lives, and finishes, exits from such school, actually as a perfect condition for mastering his social life. So Toowoomba is a good reference for world peace, to achieve world peace. This experience can be ex- posed and transferred to every where. So I ask myself if it is possible to establish such school models throughout the world. I think yes. Whereas different societies have their own unique conditions, which should be taken into consideration.H.E. Mr Diekumpuna Sita Nsadisi Jose, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Angola to UNESCO. Peer Reviewer Next week, Monday to Wednesday 23 rd to 25 th Oct, I will be participating in a School Review at Milpera State High School. As has recently occurred in our school, 3 Reviewers spend 3 days in a school looking at all op- erations and providing detailed feedback on how the school is going and what it might consider doing to en- hance what it can do. I had asked to be involved in the Milpera review as Milpera is a school which has some similar aspects to ours all-be-it is a High School setting. I look forward to sharing what I learn with staff and community when I return. PBL (POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING) MATTERS

The Value for this week is “Safety” with a focus on “I use the toilets in a safe, appropriate manner”. This week students will be reminded again about which toilet block to use and the importance of using the toilets correctly and hygienically. Students are also encouraged to use the amenities during break times to ensure that their learning time is maximised in the classroom. As always, we encourage students to report any problems or issues direct-ly to a staff member.

SOCIALISATION Schools provide an important opportunity for your children to practice and refine their skills in ‘getting along with others’ while achieving their education. We are all part of the Darling Heights State School, school community and we all have a vested interest in ensuring our school community is happy and healthy. We are a community of people all working to-wards the same goal; the education and socialisation of our children. Research clearly indicates the importance of the development of a partnership approach between parents and schools to learning and school attendance, to ensure children achieve to their ability. The playground environment and the classroom are areas which both provide their own socialisation challenges and it is important for parents to feel confident in approaching the school to discuss issues of concern. Some tips for problem solving in partnership with schools:

Listen clearly to your child’s concerns.

Encourage them to think of things they can do to remedy the situation.

Avoid absenteeism as a solution – this teaches that running away from problems is a valid solution.

Make a time to see your child’s teacher to discuss the issue. If necessary, also make an appointment with the Principal.

Avoid blaming – state your concerns clearly. Work in partnership with the teacher to decide how best to support the situation, looking at the problem from all sides, considering all options and making a time for review.

Remember, the school is a dynamic people community with thousands of social interactions occurring daily. It is only natural that there will be occasions when there are socialisation issues. Schools are about ensuring the safety and happi-ness of every child and are only too happy to work with parents to quickly resolve an issue or concern. A special thanks to all parents who take the time each week to sit down and talk to their child/ren about the week ’s Value and focus. If any parents have any queries or concerns or wish to discuss anything, please feel free to contact Mrs Keiryn Clements on 46 368 333. EALD News To support the parents of our EALD students, Darling Heights and the University of Southern Qld have commenced English lessons twice a week. Staff from USQ and community volunteers spend an hour every Monday and Tuesday morning between 9.00am and 10.00am in the Staff Room working in small groups to improve the English of about 25 women from other countries. We offer childcare each morning for a gold coin donation to allow mums to have an hour dedicated to improving their speech. If you would like to join us to help improve your English or if you would like to volunteer your time, please speak to Ricky Adams on 4636 8333 or by email on [email protected] and don’t for-get that the next time you pass someone from another country, take a moment to smile and say hello, it only takes a moment and that small gesture can make a big difference to someone.
