We already have some families on waiting lists for a 2014 position in some year levels. Both primary and secondary Sports Days are coming very soon. We remind parents that attendance at these days for your child is expected. It is part of a child's rounded education and is not acceptable for Sports Days, or any other special event days, to be seen as an opportunity to stay home. As this newsletter makes it home, our performers in the Samaritan Spectacular are preparing for their final performance in front of parents and friends at the theatre. The opportunity for students to be on stage and performing is something we value and we gratefully acknowledge those students who spent the extra hours rehearsing and preparing for the last few days. Well done.

Dear families,

Parish News

A couple of weeks ago we were delighted by the involvement and participation in the special Saturday evening Children’s Mass. It was noticeable how much the children and families really enjoyed the relaxed quality time together at the mass.

At the recent catholic Parish of Whyalla AGM, we highlighted the need to continually seek to engage and involve children and young people in the parish. The children’s mass is a great example of this in action.

This Sunday, August 25 is another opportunity for the older group at the Youth Mass 5:30pm olHc church.

Something new is the Australian Catholic Youth festival in Melbourne December 5 to 7, with a gathering of 4,000 young catholics from Year 9 students to those 25 years of age. We will provide more about this later.

our altar servers continue to be a very positive involvement for our young people, and a number are planning to attend the National Altar Servers Conference in Brisbane early next year.

A role of the Parish council is to see that we implement the Child protection policy, and that we have proper

procedures and practices in place. last November all volunteers in the Parish undertook the refresher for child Protection Induction Training including Police checks for those involved in volunteer positions.

At the beginning of 2013, Teresa lynch advised she was retiring as the parish Child Safe Contact person and we thank her for her dedicated service in this role. We welcome Tash Free to this appointment, and the renewed activity of the child Protection committee of the Parish Pastoral council.

on behalf of all parishioners I would like to pass on thanks to all those who have been involved with our Parish and contributed in so many different ways.

This Friday the Year 7 confirmation candidates will be attending their second workshop. As a part of their commitment to confirmation they will also be presenting themselves to the Parish at the weekend Masses. They will be sharing some information about themselves and about the saint they have chosen.

The children have already spent some time reflecting on and discussing the name of the saint they wish to take during the ceremony. choosing a saint’s name is an essential part of confirmation and it is an acknowledgement that the Holy Spirit will change you through the grace of this Sacrament. We see in Scripture that Jesus changed the name of some of his disciples to signify that their role had been changed and that they were becoming, in a sense, a new person. For example, Simon became Peter (Matthew 16:18).

The Sacrament of confirmation gives us the Holy Spirit to strengthen and encourage us to live out our baptismal commitment to love and serve others, especially those most in need. Please keep the Year 7 children in your prayers and perhaps even join them at one of the Parish Masses this weekend.

WHYALLA SHOW SUCCESS

A big thank you to all parents and Samaritan community members that took up the call to support the college at the Whyalla Show. We had a fabulous response to our call for help and the stall was again such a fabulous opportunity for parents, caregivers and staff to have a laugh and serve the community. Thank you to all who spent time supporting the school in some way at the Whyalla show.

bOOK WEEK HAS ARRIVED!

Next week is Book week! Book Week is the longest running children's festival in Australia. The theme for this year’s Book Week parade is ‘Across the Universe’. one of the highlights for me has always been the kids faces as they come to school and see their classmates and teachers dressed or wearing a mask for the parade. children can come dressed as their favourite character from a book or to suit this year’s theme of ‘Across the Universe’.

There are so many other activities happening for students over the course of the week. Be sure to ask your child what they’ve been up to. You may also like to come into the libraries at both campuses to see our staff extreme photos where staff where shot reading in all sorts of locations. Above all take the opportunity at some stage this week to sit and read a story to your children.

JUNIOR VOICES SHARE THEIR TALENT

last Thursday I had the pleasure of listening to our Samaritan Junior Voices from our our lady Help of christians campus. This small group of students perform

a range of songs under the watchful guidance of our Specialist Arts teacher Melinda Gray. This initiative really compliments the Whyalla choir and catholic School’s Music Festival choir that we offer students an opportunity to be a part of. Keep an eye out for this talented group at the Spectacular.

SpRAY DEODORANT bEING MISUSED

This week it has been brought to my attention that some of our senior students have been misusing spray deodorant at school. Whilst we see the eagerness for hygiene and grooming as a positive, over use of this can be hazardous in a number of ways but particularly to those students with asthma. Students wanting to top up during the day need to bring a roll on deodorant to school.

SApSASA STATE REpRESENTATIVES

congratulations to Austin Wilson, Josh Burne and cadell Herbert who have been selected for the SAPSASA state Hockey championship and are currently in canberra competing. I look forward to reporting on their endeavours in next week’s newsletter. Good luck boys!

COLLEGE ANNUAL

A few weeks ago now we distributed the Samaritan college Primary Annual and no doubt it has provided many laughs and hours of perusal. It would be remiss of me to acknowledge the team behind the compilation of this fabulous memento, a big thanks to linda Plunkett, Monica cohen, Shirley Bauer, Diana Jeffery and lorraine Ackling for their tireless work on this publication.

YEAR 7 WINS TENNIS LOGO COMpETITION

congratulations to Brodie Adamson a Year 7 student at our olHcc. Brodie designed the winning logo for the Regional Tennis Tournament. You can see Brodie’s winning design and all of the entries displayed at the Whyalla Tennis Association on Nicolson Avenue. Well done Brodie!

SpECTACULAR IS HERE!

Tonight is the final performance of the Samaritan college Spectacular. I wish all of our staff and students involved the very best and look forward to being a part of the audience for the performance.

Saint John's campus Sports Day will be held on Friday, Week 6, August 30 (next Friday). At this point we have a number of staff unavailable and are wondering if there are any parents who would like to help out! Anything from all day to half an hour would be greatly appreciated. Time in the canteen or raking long jump pits or handing out ribbons are jobs that can help the day run smoothly. If you can help, please contact me via the college on 8645 8568 or email [email protected]

YEAR 11 RETREAT

last week the Year 11 students attended the annual retreat at Pichie Richie Park between Port Augusta and Quorn. The three days invited the students to explore the presence of God in their lives and engage in liturgical celebrations prepared by the students.

It was an enjoyable time to be away with the students who appreciated the opportunity to unwind and refocus after the rigours of the Research Project.

The students credited themselves with their attitude and participation in the activities. We also thank our hosts Nic and Jodie Boully at Pichie Richie Park.

YOUTH MASS

on Sunday, August 25, there will be a Youth Mass at olHc church at 5:30pm. Everyone welcome.

Ms Kirby Heath will also share her experiences of World Youth Day in Rio earlier this year.

8 GOLD MASS

on Wednesday, August 28, 8 Gold will celebrate Mass at Saint Teresa’s church. The students need to be at the church by 8:45am. Mass will begin at 9:00am. The students will walk back to campus after Mass and morning tea. Parents are most welcome to join us.

AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC YOUTH fESTIVAL

Expressions of interest are being sought from students in Year 9 to 12 to be part of the Australian catholic Youth Festival. Samaritan college is interested in being part of a diocesan group to travel to Melbourne for a three day festival in December.

If you are interested please contact Mr Meixner at Samaritan college. This will be a great way to meet like-minded people of your age in a fun and engaging way.

Purpose:

The Australian catholic Youth Festival exists to:

• Provide a high quality formative and experiential opportunity for young catholics to encounter Jesus christ, in the context of the catholic church in Australia;

• listen to and discuss the issues and challenges in the lives of young catholics in Australia;

• Evangelise young people and empower them to be evangelisers;

• Provide young people with local examples and connections of vocations, social action, liturgy and prayer, catholic music and catechesis.

WHYALLA SCHOOLS STAGE bAND

on July 31, the Whyalla Schools Stage Band went on its annual tour. The Whyalla Schools Stage Band is made up of students from all the high schools in Whyalla, with a few primary students. The following students from Samaritan college came on tour: Hudson Barsby (alto saxophone), Jennifer Barsby (percussion), Tori Ferguson (clarinet), Tyler Geihlich (alto saxophone), Zoe Geihlich (clarinet) and Matt Ryan (guitar).

This year we went to Adelaide for two nights, doing performances at crystal Brook Primary School, Pt Wakefield Area School and Pooraka Primary School on the way. Whilst in Adelaide the students visited the Adelaide Zoo to see the pandas, The Elder conservatory at the University of Adelaide where students attended performance forums and gained an insight on further study in Music, and managed to squeeze in a bit of shopping. The tour was concluded with the Band competing in the Balaklava Eisteddfod, where we came second in our division, which is an excellent result! All students involved represented their schools with pride and it was a fantastic experience for all.

Eudunda have been state champions for the past 3 years, however, in a very tense and exciting final Samaritan college won by a point. MURRAY VENTURE

At the beginning of Term 3 Year 10 students, in two single gender groups, embarked on a week of bushwalking and kayaking fondly known as The Murray Venture. The tradition of Murray Venture is held in very high regard by our school and the community and has been celebrated in one form or another for over 30 years. This year a decision to outsource Murray Venture to a company with specific expertise proved to be the perfect invigoration of this long standing institution, bringing a fresh perspective to the experience. Wilderness Escapes outdoor Adventures coordinated and provided all logistical planning and execution of the camp.

At its core Murray Venture invites Year 10 students to develop resilience, build relationships and overcome personal challenges and return with a greater perception of themselves and a sense of gratitude for the comforts of home and a new appreciation of the support from family and school.

In 2013 the ‘Murray’ was divided into two separate halves. A couple of days bushwalking and a couple kayaking providing two very different aspects of the camping experience. Both boys and girls groups were divided into 3 smaller groups for the bushwalking and set out with a teacher and a guide into Wirabarra Forest carrying up to 20kg of equipment, food and water each. The girls encountered cold and damp conditions but experienced creek crossings, foggy mornings and cooking by trangier in light rain inside a pine forest setting. The boys certainly had drier conditions but climbed Mount Ellen (where the view was spectacular) and crossed some reasonably rugged country. Both groups engaged in map reading and navigation, survival shelter building, emergency first aid and rescue situations. our guides provided information about ‘bush tucker’, star gazing, games and puzzles as well as tips on re organising packs, campsite management, zero impact camping and bush safety.

The second part of the week we were transported to Roonka Scout campsite outside of Blanchetown, as the starting point for our kayaking trek. conditions on the water were near perfect allowing students the opportunity to not only paddle well over 20km but take in the beautiful cliffs, backwaters and lagoons along the river. Again our guides were invaluable suggesting ways to maximise space within a kayak for all equipment, how to waterproof clothing and sleeping bags, safety on the water, paddling skills and team games to build collaboration.

Despite some students being well out of their comfort zone all distinguished themselves throughout the week. of course there were complaints of sore and stiff muscles, lamenting the lack of social media and mobile phones, take-away or family cooking and comfy beds but each took it in their stride

to engage with the event good heartedly and positively.....requests to stay a bit longer were even heard at the end of the week....some even asked if they could do it again next year.

organising a camp of such magnitude requires careful planning and support. I would like to publically thank the teachers who accompanied myself and the students for their week and made the experience a memorable one: Jillian Turnbull, Kate Nolan, Ryan Baker and John lyons. Their hard work and dedication was very much appreciated.

A big thank you must also go to all of the Wilderness Escapes staff who were exceptional: Kelsey, Matthew, lisa, Stevo, Jess, Jayden, Russell, Moira, Michael, lewis, and luke. Feedback from the guides was extremely complimentary to our school and particularly the students who impressed Wilderness Escapes as mature, helpful, engaging, respectful and friendly.

SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

on Friday, August 9, thirty two of our Year 9 students embarked on the inaugural Science and Engineering challenge at the Whyalla Health and leisure centre. The event is hosted by the University of Newcastle, and aims to improve and entice student participation in the fields of Science and Mathematics in high schools, resulting in increased student numbers studying these subjects at university.

This was the first event held here in Whyalla, bringing together ten schools from around the Eyre Peninsula to compete against each other.

The students were grouped into teams of four and presented with an assortment of scenarios where they needed to employ a variety of skills, including team work, intuition and problem solving to be able to develop solutions to their scenario. Scores were awarded to teams based upon how well their solutions met the design criteria, or how effectively it performed the required tasks.

Scenarios presented to the students included building a hovercraft, a ‘Mars Rover’, an aeroplane and an eco-habitat, constructing a bridge, designing the electric circuits for a city and creating a solution to a ‘Pathway Problem’ and decoding messages from a satellite dish.

our students performed exceptionally well in each of their tasks, testament to their determination and learning

from their mistakes through a process of trial and error. As a result, Samaritan college came out on top of the leaderboard at the conclusion of the event.

We were presented with a trophy acknowledging the outcome, and an invitation to compete in the State Final, being held in Adelaide at the Superdrome, on Tuesday, August 27.

Thanks must go to Mrs Melissa Boden, Mr Tariro Ndoro and Miss lydia Sich for accompanying the students at the event on the day.

The students now leave for Adelaide on Monday next week, and we wish them the best of luck at the State Final!
