Comics, Cartoons, and Contested Racial Identities in U.S. History HON 3399C / HIST Group C Fall 2019: MWF 10:00 – 10:50 am Dr. Joshua Paddison CRN: 19297 This course examines how comics have reflected, shaped, and challenged Americans’ notions of racial difference from the nineteenth century to today. Along with reading recent scholarly books and articles, we will analyze a wide range of political cartoons, comic strips, comic books, and graphic novels from various periods, tracking the interrelation of comics and larger patterns of U.S. race relations. Students will conduct research projects into a topic of their choosing related to race and comics in U.S. history.
