COMFORT INN DESTROYED BY FIRE!

One thing a calamity of the extent of last Saturday's fire at Comfort Inn teaches is that even horrible events bring out the best in some people. That fire was being proclaimed as among the worst in Clinton County's history, though, had it occurred in the middle of the night instead of the middle of the day, it surely would have been much worse. A raging fire in a fully occupied, 112-room hotel would certainly have been a bigger disaster if all of the occupants had been asleep. So, for that, we should all be grateful. the people who work for him. And then there were the firefighters — scores of them — who raced to the fire from all over the county and beyond to risk all to get that monster under control. Hour after hour, they were in and out of the building, on top of it, expertly pouring water onto and into it to smother the flames. Volunteer departments hereabouts prove again and again to be the match of any group anywhere, paid or unpaid. And let's not forget the businesses and human beings who did whatever they could to advance the cause of saving the hotel and its occupants. Competitors and unallied merchants offered rooms, food, drinks and whatever services were needed to help Meron and his staff, as well as helping the firefighters. Route 3 had to be closed to traffic, meaning businesses were forced to shut down for the day. Only a very few complained. Most couldn't have been more gracious, we're told. And this was on a Saturday — a big shopping day in the midst of economic misery. Naturally, we wish Meron and his business partner, James Murray, success in navigating the tricky waters of insurance, reconstruction and returning to normalcy. We similarly wish good fortune to the many customers who had planned events for the Comfort Inn in the coming months. A disaster, for sure. But another reaffirmation, too, that good people are the heavy majority around here. BIRTHS

MAI/SETON ALUMNI Former area prosecutor adjusting to federal bench Suddaby now on federal bench

PLATTSBURGH — A former federal prosecutor who handled dozens of local cases is adjusting well to his new position on the federal bench. "It's very different," U.S. District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby recently told the Press-Republican. "It's nice though, and I'm getting used to it. My staff is in place, and I have a huge caseload already." The 1980 Plattsburgh State graduate was officially sworn to the bench in September and has been busy adjusting to his new role. It took months from when President George Bush nominated him for the job to when he was approved by the Senate and officially given the honor. "It was great to be nominated (and approved)," he said about his appointment to the Northern New York District bench. "I'm enjoying it. It's been very interesting and fascinating so far. "It's a lot quieter, that's for sure. As a U.S. attorney I was always running to a meeting or traveling. Here, it's a lot of work, but its quieter work." Before he put on the robe, Suddaby served several years as the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York, where he handled a range of cases, including many that related to local border crossings. During his time as a federal prosecutor, he served as chair of the attorney general's Advisory Committee on Border Protection and Immigration and was the Justice Department representative to the Integrated Border Law Enforcement effort with Canada. After graduating from Syracuse University College of Law, Suddaby was an assistant district attorney for Onondaga County. He later spent a few years in private practice before he was appointed chief of homicide for the Onondaga County District Attorney's Office and eventually served as chief assistant district attorney there. The Syracuse-based judge said his diverse legal background and experiences not only helped him get the job but will help guide him as he presides over cases.

"It's good to have that balance, ... and it's critical for judges to have practiced law," he said. "It's interesting being on the other side of the bench. It's a completely different role and different responsibilities. And it's been fun so far." He has already presided over a number of cases and accepted his first plea earlier this month. He was given more than 200 cases his first week on the job. Suddaby's public swearing-in ceremony will be held Dec. 11 at his alma mater, Syracuse University.

“To the Editor” A recent photo, which appeared in the Press-Republican, comes with an as yet untold story. The 20th anniversary of Seton Catholic’s beginning was certainly cause for celebration, hence the photograph of more than 200 faculty, staff, and students in a human chain which was formed into number 20. The untold story, however, is the years-long devotion and commitment to our school by the local contractor who supplied the 60-foot crane, from which the aerial photo was taken. Murnane Construction, Pat Murnane, and the entire Murnane family, are to be thanked and recognized for their most recent contribution and for their long-standing service to Seton Catholic. Businesses who donate their time and money to charitable causes are, thank the Lord, plentiful here in the North Country. But Seton Catholic is exceptionally blessed to have as their long time friend and supporter, one of the North Country’s most generous benefactors - the Murnane Family. Thank you Pat, Darcy, Mike, and the whole gang! MARK L. BARIE. President Seton Catholic Education Council 2008 Reunion a great success... Annual Alumni Fund Drive for Seton

To the Alumni of MAI, Seton Catholic, St.

John’s, OLVA, D'Youville, The MAI-Seton Alumni Association would like to sincerely thank the alumni for the support they gave us last year. We are undertaking our annual campaign to raise funds to help keep us at the forefront of the academic institutions in this state. This year, we have included a report that allows you to see just how well Seton Students perform vs. other schools. Remember, the budget at Seton is NOT funded by taxpayers or the government and they need our help!

Seton has made great changes for the better with the guidance of Monsignor Robert Aucoin, Vicar of Education for the Diocese of Ogdensburg and principal. Msgr. Aucoin has wonderful credentials and his vision and leadership are welcome at Seton where we believe strong, moral, Christian values need to be taught and lived. Our focus on the academic, physical and the spiritual development of the students have been enhanced by his leadership. Over the last 10-12 years, the Alumni Association has been able to offer over $40,000 in scholarship aid as well as more than $100,000 towards buildings, technology, equipment and support for Seton. It is the generosity of the Alumni that has helped the small group of Alumni Officers to make a difference at Seton. Enclosed you will find a donor card that will allow you to participate. Please consider supporting the students of Seton Catholic and the Association and help us to continue to be a valuable asset to the greater Plattsburgh Community. Our public support comes from the community and Seton students learn to give back. Please accept our sincere thank you for your support The Alumni Assoc. Board of Directors

Past Issues of “The Bridge” We have been working to get to the point where we can have Seton Catholic and their Journalism club control the publication of “The Bridge”. It is getting harder and harder to get enough information for the issues without active participation in the school. We need the alumni to continue to e-mail us articles of interest, things that have happened in your life, or items you know of other alumni accomplishments. I have been working with Msgr. Aucoin at Seton and currently, when we issue, ”The Bridge”, we send an e-mail to around 400-450 alumni. Seton Catholic has many of the past 2-3 years of “The Bridge” issues posted on their web site. You may go to the Seton site anytime to look up information and view past issues of this publication. SETON’S WEBSITE IS: WWW.SETONCATHOLIC.NET Our thanks to Seton for supporting us and helping us keep the memories of the founding schools and alumni alive and looking into the future.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Seton Catholic Central So far, there are over 1000 graduates and Alumni that are “Seton Graduates”. As a point of comparison, there are about 750 graduates from St. John’s we have known addresses for and only about 350 from OLVA and a very small number from D’Youville academy. Currently, there still is the largest number from Mount Assumption with right around 2700 valid addresses of those alums.
