• Vlad the Impaler was the ruler

of Wallachia.

• He ruled three times in:

1448, 1456-1462, 1476.• During that time the capital of Wallachia was Târgoviste.

• Vlad the Impaler was one of the greatest heroes of the struggle for freedom and independence of Romania.

• He is one of the most important rulers who marked with his personality the Romanian history.

Biography

• Vlad Țepeș was born in the city of Sighișoara in Transylvania in 1431; he was a ruler of Wallachia - a region of nowadays Romania.

• .

• Known for his sadism, Vlad was respected by his subjects for his fighting campaigns against the Turks.

• He was respected both as a fighter and as a prince who did not tolerate injustice.

• During his reign he also

built monasteries.

He was a hero who was loved

and feared at the same time

by his people. He made justice a virtue.

• For the Romanians Vlad the Impaler is the prince under whose rulership people used a solid gold goblet to drink from the fountain of Târgoviște City and nobody stole it.

Historically• Vlad Tepes has enjoyed over centuries a great popularity,• his subjects saw him as a man of justice• He was brave and fearless,daring, worthy, moral, BUTHe hated: stealing, laziness, begging, deceit and greed.

• Vlad the Impaler was a man who above all loved justice, and who did not hesitate to sacrifice himself for a political ideal of our history, “The Independence“.

• Vlad was assassinated in 1476.

• The body was decapitated and his head was sent in a bowl full of honey to Istanbul. It is said that Sultan Mehmed stuck a spike in it as retaliation for tens of thousands of Turks who were killed by Vlad in the same way.

• It is not known where his body is buried.

• It was assumed that he was buried at Snagov Monastery, or Comana Monastery, which he built.

Vlad the Impaler (Dracula), between myth and historical truth

• Vlad Tepes was a character that has fascinated both the literary and the historical world.

• His life is to be understood only with the help of the numerous legends.

• It was the subject of many   works, both literary   and historical.

• The famous novel "Dracula" of the Irish writer Bram Stoker, ignores historical truth and presents us with Vlad as a villain, surrounded by some mythical aura.

• Vlad the Impaler managed to create, intentionally or not, a legendary image.

• He would not have raised so much interest if it had not been for his important traits of character, personality and his controversial deeds.

• From the Byzantine historians, we learn about his fame,the fear that Turkish soldiers experienced at his sight, but also that of his own people, who never betrayed him. 13-PM-210-DJ-ES

Legends about Vlad the Impaler

1 - The Golden Cup• One legend says that during the second reign (he was 3 times the ruler of Wallachia) he put a golden cup near a fountain in the center of Târgoviște(the capital of Wallachia in those times) as he was sure about the efficiency of the cruel punishments for thieves.The cup was used by thirsty travellers. Legend has it that during his reign the golden cup never disappeared. Even more, it was barely used since people hardly had the courage to touch it.

2 - The Boyar`s Sack• It is said that one day, Vlad Tepes, wanting to

test the honesty of a boyar, took from him a sack with 100 gold coins. After a day, the boyar had come to Vlad, outraged that someone from the Country`s Council stole from him a bag with .... 200 gold coins. Vlad would have angrily given back the bag, after which the had the boyar impaled for lying and greed.

3 - How he got rid of beggars

• Vlad was not a good man. On the contrary, he thought that all the under-privileged (the beggars, the sick, the homeless) were actually thieves who took advantage of people's mercy. One day, he got as many as he could in the City of Târgoviște, into a room. He had them served a great feast. When everything ended, Vlad would have locked the room and would have set fire to it, leaving no one alive.

• During the reign of Vlad the Impaler, a merchant who was traveling on Romanian land began to yell at crossroads that he had lost a bag with a thousand lei. He promised a hundred lei to whom might find it. Not before long a Christian, with fear of God, as were many Romanians during that time, said to the victim :

• “merchant, as I was walking, at the back road of the crossroad, I found this bag. I reckon it is yours, because I heard that you lost a bag”.

• “Indeed, it is mine, and I really thank you for bringing it to me!”

• After counting the money, he put it back into the bag, and said to the man who had brought it :

• “I counted it, and I saw that you've kept your share. Instead of a thousand lei,I found nine hundred. And you did well, because it was your right”.

• “Master merchant, said the man, I am sorry that you say you are short of one hundred lei. I have not even untied it to see how much money there was in it. The way I found it is the way I brought it to you!” Meanwhile, the merchant began to count and think of how to deceive the man.

• “I told you, said the merchant in a short voice, I lost a bag with a thousand lei and you brought me only nine hundred”.. The man said nothing, but went instead to the Prince, to complain.• “Your Highness, he said, he did not give me the promised hundred lei and I'm angry not for the money but because he suspects me of not being honest. I was honest and it didn`t even cross my mind to touch his money”.. The Prince guessed the merchant`s intentions. After hearing the both parts he was ready to do justice.

•Looking straight into the merchant`s eyes said:

•`` If you lost a bag with a thousand lei, and he found one with nine hundred, it is clear that the bag does not belong to your.You, on the other hand, take the bag with the nine hundered lei and give it to the person who will claim its loss; and you, merchant, wait until somebody finds your bag with the thousand lei-the one which you claim you lost!!!
