seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter

“Come together as we await in wonder.”

Dear Parishioners,

The second week of Advent fi nds such powerful scriptures to guide our preparation for Christmas. In his homily last weekend, our deacon candidate Christopher Weiland, made the distinction between waiting and watching. Advent is calling us to ac-tive watching for the ways that the Lord is entering our lives and calling us to new life.

Isaiah speaks poetically about the coming of the Messiah. He will come as a shepherd, to gather us. He will be the herald of good news. The Gospel of Mark reminds us that John the Baptist was the voice crying out in the desert, “prepare the way of the Lord”. All this requires attentive watching as the Lord manifests His love to us.

As pastor, I have the special vantage point of attentive watching as our parish grows spiritually. From early in the morning when many gather for Mass, to those who faithfully volun-teer in the Sharing Room, to those visiting the homebound, to catechists teaching our children, to late into the evening as scripture groups and the many committees conclude their meetings, God’s grace surrounds us.

Last week I went up to the Motherhouse in Milwaukee to visit with Sr. Marie Krippner OSF. She looks great and as always, we had a wonderful conversation. She has had such a signifi cant infl uence on our parish community. If you would like to send her a Christmas card, please send it to; Sr. Marie Krippner OSF, Sacred Heart Center, 1545 S. Layton Blvd. Milwaukee, 53215 She would love to hear from you!

Next weekend, parishioner and au-thor Jeff Jacobs will be signing cop-ies of his book, Get Off the Couch, See it Live. The book recounts Jeff’s

adventures of how he was able to witness many of the greatest sport-ing events in recent years. It would make a great stocking stuffer for the sports fan on your list. He is sharing proceeds of the book with our youth ministry program.

Special thanks to Guild 3 that did an awesome job of decorating the rectory for Christmas. The Christmas Celebration at North Shore Country Club was terrifi c. Thanks to all those who supported the raffl e and helped provide invitations for the parish staff and sisters. Tony and Pat Indovina, with the help of many “elves”, sponsored our 27th Christmas Party with the 3rd graders of St. Sabina. Breakfast with Santa last weekend packed the Playdium. Last Sunday’s pizza party at Middy Mags raised hundreds of dollars for Sr. Paulanne’s Needy Family Fund. After a night of waiting tables, I plan to keep my day job!

OLPH in the news…Coach Jim O'Gara was featured in a recent segment on TV regarding efforts to reduce the risk of concussions here at OLPH. Yes, that was Sr. Paulanne on a recent telecast of the Blackhawks. I am interviewed in the current issue of America Magazine in an article, "Meet These Catholics Who Voted for Trump and Love Pope Francis", a perspective on pastoring at a time of deep divisions within parishes.

Our seminarians, Justin Agbir, Michael Langaur and Antonio Camacho have completed their fi rst semester here at OLPH. We are delighted to have them here and look forward to another semester of min-istry and experience. Our committee, headed by Tim Daniels, has done a great job of welcoming them.

May your Advent be blessed!

Thoughts on the

Sunday

Scriptures

Today’s second reading is about Christ’s coming again, “The day of the Lord,” Peter calls it, but that day isn’t December 25th. It’s that other day, that second-coming-day about which Peter is concerned.

He waits with great hope and anticipation for God to remake the earth into a place of perfect justice and peace. And he sets some demanding goals for the Christian com-munity as it awaits that fi nal day of accounting and reconciliation: strive to be at peace, without spot or blem-ish.

Christian stewards work for peace. As we await the com-ing of Christmas, what can we do to promote peace in our homes, workplaces, community and world?

Prayer for an Engaged Church

Dear Lord, we want to be an engaged church, a parish motivated by love for You and committed to our mission of living out Your gospel. We ask that You be with us on our spiritual journey.Help us to be a worshipping community, devoted to Mass, praying with and for one another, and lifting our voices joyfully in song.Help us to be a welcoming community with smiles and outstretched arms as we greet all who enter our doors, be they friends or strangers.Help us to be a community of good stewards who support our parish and are compassionate to the needs of the poor.Help us to be a ministering community, cheerfully and tirelessly offering time and talent in service to others.Help us to be a community of disciples who place You, Lord, at the center of our lives.Help us to be an engaged community with open hearts and open minds to Seek You Lord, Share Your Gifts, and Rejoice in Your Blessings. We ask these things in Your Holy Name.Amen.

- by Margie André

Please continue to remember the needy throughout the Advent season!

OLPH Book ClubIn November, we had a discussion of John Dear’s book, “The Beatitudes of Peace”. John Dear is one man who goes the whole way in following the path he knows in his heart to be right. Like his more famous mentor, Dan Berrigan, he was not afraid to go to jail in pursuit of his conviction about militarism and nuclear bombs. Our Pope Francis recently said that we must aim for the total elimination of all nuclear arsenals, and he does not leave any option for nuclear deterrence. In this way, John Dear lives a most humble and mystical life in New Mexico. His closeness to Jesus comes through on every page. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough to all Catholics.

Likewise, our book for January, “Building a Bridge” by James Martin SJ, is one that is very special for us Catholics. We saw recently that once this book was published, some Catholic colleges withdrew their invitation to James Martin to address the students. The book does happen to have an imprima-tur and is highly recommended by several bishops and theologians. All it asks of us is to have respect, compassion, and sensitivity for members of the LGBT community. Traditional teaching has often led to great fear; however, this book is a real balance to the often-warped understanding we get of church teaching. Copies of the book are available in the Sacristy, and our next meeting will take place on Monday, January 22 in the youth offi ce in Monticello at 7 pm. All are welcome, even those who have not read the book. We especially welcome members of the LGBT community.

Four happy faces coming out from Rigoletto in the Lyric Opera. It was a truly great experience for all. Each month, three members of the youth group attend one of the operas. We are very grateful for those who have donated that make this opportunity possible.

KairosKairos 45 - We recently had a very wonderful retreat for 70 high school seniors and juniors. A team of 14 seniors who had already done the retreat spent sev-eral hours each Sunday night for six months being trained in leadership skills by Father Paddy. We also spent an idyllic weekend in a beau-tiful house in Watersmeet, Wisconsin, an hour beyond Eagle River. This was a hectic work weekend, but we also had exciting boat and jet ski expe-

riences on the lake, supervised by our hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Lathrop. It was a truly exhilarating experience to be with the young people on the last night of the Kairos retreat. We pray that God’s Holy Spirit will remain with them all their lives and that they will never lose sight of the vision and dreams they had on the Kairos 45.

Kairos 46 - Our next Kairos retreat is April 26–29. If you have a son or daughter who is a junior or senior, please let them know. All spots for junior girls have been fi lled, and there is already a long wait list. Please advise senior boys/girls and junior boys to get their applications in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Application forms are available in the Parish Offi ce.

What You Need to Know About the “Invest in Kids” Tax Credit Scholarships A Guide to Donating November 2017 Through the “Invest in Kids Act,” Illinois children from low-income families who choose to attend private schools will have access to new scholarships. The scholarships offered through this program could cover up to 100 percent of tuition and eligible fees for next school year. Below is key information about the program and donating to these scholarships. Tax Credit Scholarships: The scholarships provide an Illinois state income tax credit to individuals and corporations that contribute money to a non-profit Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO). The SGOs award scholarships to eligible students from low-income families. Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGO): An SGO is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is responsible for the following:

Receiving donations from individuals and corporations; Receiving and processing scholarship applications from students/families; and Distributing scholarships to eligible students/families in accordance with the law.

Tax Credits: Individuals and corporations that donate to SGOs may receive a credit for their Illinois state taxes equal to 75 percent of donations to an SGO.

Example: A taxpayer donates $10,000 to an SGO. The taxpayer will be eligible to claim a $7,500 tax credit when he or she files their 2018 taxes.

Tax credits are capped at $1 million per taxpayer per year, which means a donor can contribute about $1.33 million to receive the maximum tax credit allowed. Total tax credits are capped at $75 million per year statewide, which equates to $100 million in donations and scholarships. Taxpayers can rollover their tax credits up to five years. Designating Donations: Individuals may direct donations to a particular school or subset of schools, but not to an individual student or group of students. Corporate donors cannot restrict their donations. Donation Process: Beginning January 2, 2018, donors can indicate the amount they want to donate and reserve the corresponding tax credits through the Illinois Department of Revenue’s website. The Department of Revenue will grant tax credits on a first-come, first-served basis. Individuals and corporations then have 60 days to donate that indicated amount to an SGO. Scholarship Eligibility: Starting with the 2018/2019 school year, K-12 students from families with limited financial resources are eligible to receive a tax credit scholarship. To be considered for a scholarship, students must be from a household with income below 300 percent of the federal poverty level ($73,800 for family of four). Prior to April 1, 2018 priority will be given to:

Students from households that are below 185 percent of the federal poverty level ($45,510 for family of four).

Students who reside in a “focus district” (low-performing public schools) Siblings of scholarship students.

seek, share, rejoice - project hope november update

Project New Hope OLPH #1 / France

Background: This family consists of a separated mom and a one-year-old baby boy. Our mom is originally from France and has been in the US for the last ten years. Mom is currently going through a divorce due to domestic violence. Her husband is not permitted to visit the baby unless supervised.

Update: Our mom is still working hard in a night shift from her home, providing customer service for a com-pany selling wellness products online. She remains grateful to the OLPH parishioner who donated a laptop for her work. She also has received the encouraging news that her application for a green card has been granted “Prima Facie (on its face) Status” and will be continued to April, 2018.

Goals:• Save 6 months’ rent• Continue to work with Life Span on her immigra-

tion status• Follow through with the divorce and order of

protection• Continue DV counseling• Pay monthly bills on time

This family is forever grateful to the Parishioners for their continued support.

Project New Hope OLPH #2 / Botsawana

Background: This family was referred by Aid for Women. At the time, our mom was a married 44-year-old female with two boys ages 19 months and 5 years. She became homeless due to domestic violence and low-income status after immigrating from Botswana with her husband and oldest son.

Update: Our mom continues to soar in the Program. In September, she spoke to the Sharing Ministry at OLPH and in October, she spoke at Charities’ Annual Harvest of Hope Benefi t. Our mom told the attendees her powerful and touching story about her triumph over homelessness, thanks to help from Aid for Women and Catholic Charities’ New Hope Program. Our mom was fi lled with joy at the warm reception by the Sharing Ministry and Harvest of Hope attendees, and by the big hug she received from the Benefi t Honoree, Sister Paulanne, after she spoke. Our mom continues to work full-time as a CNA at a nursing home, and to study with the Women’s Program at Harper College to become an LPN. She also is happy to report that her two sons are thriving in pre-school and fi rst grade.

Goals:• Continue to build credit by paying debt monthly• Follow-up with child support• Continue education

This family is also forever grateful for everything that the parishioners have done!

NH is very excited to see what this mom will do next!

Project New Hope OLPH #3 / Evanston

A new family consisting of an African American elder-ly woman and her seventeen-year-old grandson was referred to our Program by the City of Evanston. She became homeless due to a reverse mortgage fraud and lost her home that was in her family for over 30 years that she shared with her late husband. She was staying at two local hotels for over one month with assistance from the City of Evanston. She re-ports that the City of Evanston Regional Ombudsman Program Manager has referred her to a lawyer con-cerning the issue of mortgage fraud. Her grandson is a senior in high school.

Project New Hope “Shared Parishes”St. Catherine LaBoure, St. Philip the Apostle & OLPH

Background: This family consists of a single 35-year-old African American female with three children. The client became homeless when she left her ex-spouse because he was verbally abusive in 2015. Client then moved in with her sister who receives Section 8 ben-efi ts. She reported that they got into a family dispute and she was asked to leave. When our mom fi rst came into the program she was pregnant and recently gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The children are the following ages: a 10-year old girl, 8-year old boy, and baby boy now a few months old.

Update: Our mom works 40 hours as a CNA in two part-time positions. She also has enrolled in an “LPN Bridge” program which will begin in December. Our mom has child care in place and her two older chil-dren are doing well in school. She is on a good path!

Goals:• Save at least 3 months rent• Improve her credit• Client currently has an open case for child support

New Hope is proud of this mom’s strong start in the Program; New Hope and the mom thank the Shared Parishes who make helping her possible!
