Selichot to be part of Shabbat Service on

Friday, September 23rdSelichot is a brief yet beautiful service steeped

in poetic passages petitioning God for forgiveness and praising God for being merciful and kind. During the service, the Torah covers are changed from the colorful robes of the regular year to the white covers of the High Holy Days. The short service pulls from the liturgical and musical themes of the High Holy

Days tugging on our souls to return yet again to the place of holiness as we prepare to enter the New Year. Please join the congregation to celebrate

Shabbat and to welcome the upcoming High Holy Days on Friday, September 23rd.

3Our Clergy

We welcome back our Religious School, Hebrew School, Teens and Confirmation students from a summer of fun, travel, discovery and Jewish camping. This summer, 58 of our Temple Emanu-El students attended Jewish summer camp, 30 of whom attended Henry S. Jacobs Camp, several students traveled to Israel on educational trips, 6 of our teens worked as counselors at a number of Jewish camps and 6 of our teens worked as counselors at The Discovery School summer camp. This summer alone, Temple Emanu-El , in partnership with the Grafman Endowment Fund, Sisterhood and Brotherhood, awarded 27 students need-based scholarships to attend Jewish summer experiences. How proud we are of our students and their families for making Jewish summer camp and Israel experiences a valuable part of their Jewish journey. This year we are blessed to have an incredible Youth and Education teaching team, and I am excited to introduce them to you: Laura Armistead, Abraham Askenazi, Elon Azera, Susan Brown, Elizabeth Dillard, Eli Foree, Sherron Goldstein, Adam Gordon, Rachel Honan,

Max Klapow, Vicki Lugar, Billie Marsala, Sarah Mintz, Eli Pinhas, Julia Solomon, and Sarah Steinberg. Our teacher assistants are as follows: Morgan Cohn, Talia Fleisig, Carly Nadler, Hayden Robinson, Lauren Sklar, Maddie Stern, Andrew Strickland, Hannah Strickland, Maddie Usdan, Aaron Weil, Juliet Wiatrak, and Katie Wiatrak. I am so proud of the team we have assembled this year. Each and every week they will bring their energy and enthusiasm and make Judaism come alive in engaging and creative ways. Our students are fortunate to have a group of dedicated teachers who are excited to explore together our faith, traditions, holidays and our people’s history. This year one of our seventh graders, as part of her Bat Mitzvah project, will serve as a shadow for another student in our program to help navigate the Sunday morning experience to make it a positive and successful learning journey. One of our high school students worked this summer with the Youth and Education administration team to help prepare first day materials, curriculum and classroom set up. We have a group of students who help lead Shabbat worship once a month as part of our Shabbatones worship band. We have a nice group of college students from UAB and Birmingham Southern who teach Hebrew and Judaica, and we have Temple Emanu-El students who’ve come back to Birmingham upon college graduation and are now working as teachers on Sunday morning, bringing it full circle, to make Jewish learning engaging in the place they call home. How blessed we are to have such an amazing temple family. One Sunday a month, we provide a worship and schmooze opportunity for our families with children 0-5 called Simcha Sunday; one Friday evening a month, we provide a Family Shabbat experience with our Shabbatones followed by a Shabbat dinner. We hope you will join us at Temple for the many opportunities to engage with our Temple family. Check out the calendar of events for the year by visiting the Temple website and clicking on the Youth and Education tab. The dates in the box to the right are important days to remember as the new school year gets underway.Additional information can be found on the front cover of this bulletin. Temple Emanu-El seeks to nurture and involve our youth in synagogue life. We create a warm and welcoming environment where our young people can thrive socially, intellectually, and spiritually. We offer a variety of programs, for families with young children to families with teens in High School – the goal being to create a positive sense of Jewish identity and provide a foundation for religious learning experiences. The Gail and Jeffrey Bayer Family Religious School has earned a reputation for innovation and excellence. The voices of our children fill our hallways with words of song, prayer, Hebrew, and laughter, and we are excited to kick off another dynamic and engaging year of learning at Temple!

Gabriel KerteszGabriel Ewell Kertesz is an eighth grader at Homewood Middle School. He is the son of Alice Walther and Stefan Kertesz. Together, they look forward to celebrating with family, friends and members of the congregation. For his bar mitzvah project, Gabriel is collecting toiletries and other items for Firehouse Shelter. He will also make a donation in support of a scholarship to Henry S. Jacobs camp.

August 5, 2016My time at Jacobs Camp this summer was amazing. I experienced so many new things. I made friends and memories that will last a lifetime and I have learned why they said “welcome home” on the first day. It’s because once you spend any amount of time there it starts to feel like home. I am so grateful that you helped make these experiences possible by giving the funds needed to make this magical summer happen. Thank you, John Cohn

The High Holy Day

10-Day Campaign

Each month, tEmplE Emanu-El choosEs a spEcific rEcipiEnt for our

tzEdakah Box

Though the campaign officially runs between Rosh Hashanah

and Yom Kippur, the needs in our community here in Birmingham are too great to simply relegate

to a few days. As you spend time preparing for the High Holy Days

ahead, please remember the three pillars of our faith:

Teshuva (returning to self-purity), Tefillah (prayer), and

Tzdakah (acts of loving kindness) So as we enter the month of Elul and progress toward the

New Year, take action to make the world a better place by making a donation to the

Tzedakah Box in our Temple Lobby. The money will be

distributed to organizations doing the good work here in our city.

Our Family History in Gadsden When Temple Beth Israel in Gadsden merged with Temple Emanu-El,

they moved their archives for preservation to the William Bremen Jewish Heritage Museum, located at 1440 Spring Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30309.

The museum’s website is www.theberman.org. The Cuba Family Archives for Southern Jewish History is a repository for records from Temple Beth

Israel of Gadsden, AL, and records from many other southern Temples and Jewish organizations which are no longer active. The Temple Beth Israel archives span the years 1921-2011 and may be expanded. There are no restrictions on access. The Museum painstakingly preserved the history

of Temple Beth Israel for study by researchers and the general public. In addition, the Temple Beth Israel cemetery is designated as a

State of Alabama Historical Cemetery. It was the first cemetery of any kind in Etowah County to be so designated. The historic designation

followed a year of restoration and official documentation submitted by Allan and Joan Morris. Information about the cemetery can be found

online under State of Alabama Historical Cemeteries.
