MOZART died in Vienna in 1791 at the age of thirty-fi ve. His output in that last year was extraordinary, containing some of his

best-loved vocal works – e Magic Flute, La Clemenza di Tito, the Ave Verum and, of course, the Requiem. In tonight’s concert, selections from these works are sung by the company, and the story behind them, and the life and death of their author, is described by his close friend Emanuel Schikaneder.

SCHIKANEDER was an enormous fi gure in his own right, actor, singer, playwright, theatre manager, producer and impresario,

who dominated theatre life under the Habsburgs for decades. He commissioned e Magic Flute from Mozart, wrote the libretto and was the original Papageno. e musical of his own life, directed by Sir Trevor Nunn, is currently a box-offi ce smash in Vienna.

and lyrics Stephen Schwartz, director

Trevor Nunn.
