COUNCIL NEWS FOR DIGGERS REST by Watts Ward Cr Renata Cugliari Hello and welcome to this edition of the Diggers Rest Community Newsletter.

Melton Shire Council has considered its 2008/09 budget and has agreed to maintain rates at the projected CPI level of 4.4 percent.

A number of projects in and around Diggers Rest have been listed in the 2008/2009 budgets including the rehabilitation of Plumpton Road south of Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road, bridge rehabilitation at Holden Road and the construction of a ‘staggered T’ intersection at the Holden and Plumpton Road intersection. Three street lighting improvements will also be carried out on Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road.

I was pleased to see many residents attend the recent Diggers Rest Family Fair at the Stan PayneReserve. I would like to congratulate Council’s Tourism and Events team for organising this fabulousevent and thanks to everyone who attended who helped make the day such a wonderful success.

I would like to congratulate Diggers Rest Primary School which was the top school in the Shire onNational Walk Safely to School Day. On the day, 88 percent of the school’s students participated in theprogram. Well done to everyone involved.

Remember to stay safe on our roads, especially around our schools and kindergartens. Cr Renata Cugliari

1St Diggers Rest Scout Group would like to thank the Melton Shire Council for approving our recent application for a Community Strengthening Grant.

These funds have enabled our group to purchase much needed equipment to expand our existing program. This ensures that we can continue to provide a safe, yet exciting, educational program to our youth members.

Our cubs and scouts can now enjoy luxurious 2 star camping opportunities with a 70 litre esky, 3 burner camp stove, 9kg gas bottle and 3 trangias (portable camping cookware).

We would encourage other community groups to apply for similar funding as it becomes available. The application

process is not difficult but it is rigorous. Groups need to ensure that their application addresses the criteria and that quotes are current and accurate. This is where Council staff can assist with the development of your application.

So particular thanks goes to Anastasia and Paula who provided us with valuable support and advice during the application process. A big thank you to our treasurer, Julie Bootle, for putting our submission together.

1st Diggers Rest Scout Group Cubs meet on Tuesday evenings and Scouts on Thursday evenings. Contact Secretary Lynette Stanyer 0412 870 702 for details.

Power Point available in Diggers Rest

The Recharge Scheme is a Metro Access initiative in partnership with local businesses. Recharge is about supporting people in our community who may require an accessible power point to recharge their scooter while they are out and about. It is also about encouraging local businesses to provide a power point so that people who use a scooter can recharge their battery if required.

Even if the power point offer never gets used, it’s more about giving people confidence to get to the shops and back, knowing that they have support to recharge their battery if the need arose. The support of local businesses is crucial to the program’s success. Through the Melton Shire Council Metro Access Project Officer, people who use scooters have had the opportunity to provide feedback about the most suitable businesses to locate recharge points in. Diggers Rest Family Services Centre now has a recharge point and is available on Monday, Tuesday and Friday between 9.00am - 3.00pm. Residents are asked to call Paula on 9740 0817 prior to attending to ensure that the centre is open on the day required.
