Determine the business impact of your problemWhen you report a problem to IBM, you are asked to supply a severity level. Therefore, you need to understand and assess the business impact of the problem you are reporting. Use the following criteria:Severity 1 Critical business impact: You are unable to use the program, resulting in a critical impact on operations. This condition requires an immediate solution. Significant business impact: The program is usable but is severely limited. Some business impact: The program is usable with less significant features (not critical to operations) unavailable. Minimal business impact: The problem causes little impact on operations, or a reasonable circumvention to the problem has been implemented.

Severity 2 Severity 3 Severity 4

Describe your problem and gather background informationWhen explaining a problem to IBM, be as specific as possible. Include all relevant background information so that IBM Software Support specialists can help you solve the problem efficiently. Changes for IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5This section summarizes changes that have been made to the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager product and this publication.

Technical Changes for Version 5 Release 3 December 2004| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The following changes have been made to the product for this edition: ACSLS Library Support Enhancements Library support has been enhanced to allow the sharing of ACSLS libraries. This implementation will provide the basic support to share ACSLS libraries across Tivoli Storage Manager servers in the same way that SCSI libraries are shared. Support for LAN-Free data movement using libraries that are controlled by StorageTeks ACSLS interface has also been provided. As a result, the use of a third party product is no longer required. See the Administrators Guide for more information. See the following changed commands: DEFINE LIBRARY UPDATE LIBRARY Activity Log Management The activity log can now be managed based either on maximum size for the log or retention time. The new option for size-based activity log management gives administrators greater control over the amount of space the activity log occupies. Additional information about the activity log is now displayed when the server status is queried. See the Administrators Guide for more information. See the following changed commands: QUERY STATUS SET ACTLOGRETENTION Check-In and Check-Out Enhancements The amount of user intervention required for check in and check out functions has been reduced. See the Administrators Guide for more information. See the following changed commands: CHECKIN LIBVOLUME CHECKOUT LIBVOLUME LABEL LIBVOLUME MOVE DRMEDIA MOVE MEDIA Collocation by Group Collocation by group is now supported. Groups of nodes can be defined, and the server can then collocate data based on these groups. Collocation by group can yield the following benefits: v Reduce unused tape capacity by allowing more collocated data on individual tapes v Minimize mounts of target volumes Copyright IBM Corp. 1993, 2004

TCPBUFSIZE TCPWINDOWSIZE LAN-free Environment Configuration Enhancements have been made to allow you to quickly determine if your LAN-free environment has been configured correctly. You can request validation for one client node and one storage agent. When validation is requested, a detailed report is generated explaining why the storage pool is or is not LAN-free capable. As a result, you can determine if there is a setting or configuration issue on the server preventing LAN-free data movement. See the Administrators Guide for more information. See the following new command: VALIDATE LANFREE NDMP Operations NDMP operations for backup of NAS file servers have been enhanced to support the following functions: v Directory-level backup of NAS data, which enables the division of a file system backup operation among several NDMP backup operations as well as several tape drives. This enhancement will reduce backup and restore times. v The ability to separate the snapshot creation process from the actual backup of the data. Snapshots can be taken any time, while the backup to tape can be deferred to a more convenient time. See the Administrators Guide for more information. See the following new commands: DEFINE VIRTUALFSMAPPING DELETE VIRTUALFSMAPPING QUERY VIRTUALFSMAPPING UPDATE VIRTUALFSMAPPING See the following changed commands: BACKUP NODE QUERY FILESPACE REMOVE NODE RENAME FILESPACE RESTORE NODE New Interface to Manage Servers: Administration Center The Administration Center is a Web-based interface that can be used to centrally configure and manage IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5.3 servers. This new interface replaces the administrative Web interface. The Administration Center is installed as an IBM Integrated Solutions Console component. The Integrated Solutions Console allows you to install components provided by multiple IBM applications, and access them from a single interface. See the Installation Guide for installation information. See the Administrators Guide for more information. RECLAMATIONTYPE=SNAPLOCK are protected in NetApp NearStore storage systems from inadvertent or malicious deletion. The retention date for files stored in these file systems is derived from the attributes of the Tivoli Storage Manager Archive Copy Group. See the Administrators Guide for more information. See the following changed commands: DEFINE COPYGROUP DEFINE DEVCLASS DEFINE SPACETRIGGER DEFINE STGPOOL DEFINE VOLUME DELETE VOLUME QUERY STGPOOL QUERY VOLUME UPDATE COPYGROUP UPDATE DEVCLASS UPDATE SPACETRIGGER SAN-Device Mapping SAN environment support has been enhanced to handle device path configuration changes automatically. If a devices path is altered due to bus resets or other environment changes to the SAN, Tivoli Storage Manager will perform SAN discovery using the HBA API to find the correct path to the desired target device. Manual updates to the path information are no longer required. See the Administrators Guide for more information. See the following new command: QUERY SAN SCSI Library Enhancements You can now define a 3592 drive to an SCSI library. See the Administrators Guide for more information. Server Processing Control in Scripts Administrators can automate routine server operations. In server scripts, commands can now be processed in serial and parallel. This enables multiple processes to run concurrently, which reduces data transfer time. See the Administrators Guide for more information. See the following new commands: PARALLEL SERIAL Simultaneous Write Inheritance Improvements The simultaneous write function lets you write data simultaneously to primary storage pools and up to three copy storage pools, increasing your level of data protection and reducing the time required for storage pool backup. In version 5.3, when a data storage operation switches from a primary storage pool to the next primary storage pool in the storage pool hierarchy, the next storage pool inherits the list of copy storage pools and the value of the COPYCONTINUE parameter from the primary storage pool. One benefit of this design is that it reduces the likelihood that mount points have to be released and reacquired when the server switches from one primary storage pool to another. backup and restore for network-attached storage (NAS) file servers from IBM and Network Appliance. NDMP allows a network storage-management application to control the backup and restore of an NDMP-compliant file server without installing third-party software on that server. The NAS file server does not require installation of Tivoli Storage Manager software. The Tivoli Storage Manager server uses NDMP to connect to the NAS file server to initiate, control, and monitor a file system backup or restore operation. The NDMP support for NAS file servers enables higher performance backup to tape devices without moving the data over the LAN. TDP for NDMP is a separately priced and licensed product. Chapter 1. Using Syntax DiagramsThis section describes how to read the syntax diagrams for each administrator command contained in this manual. To read a syntax diagram, follow the path of the line. Read from left to right and from top to bottom. v The symbol indicates the beginning of a syntax diagram. v The symbol, at the end of a line, indicates that the syntax diagram continues onto the next line. v The symbol, at the beginning of a line, indicates that a syntax diagram continues from the previous line. v The symbol indicates the end of a syntax diagram. Syntax items (for example, a keyword or variable) may be: v Directly on the line (required) v Above the line (default) v Below the line (optional)

Syntax Diagrams DescriptionsThis section covers syntax diagrams including descriptions and examples: Abbreviations: Uppercase letters denote the shortest acceptable abbreviation. If an item appears entirely in uppercase letters, you cannot abbreviate the item. You can type the item in uppercase letters, lowercase letters, or any combination. In this example, you can enter CMDNA, CMDNAM, or CMDNAME in any combination of uppercase and lowercase letters.CMDNAme

Symbols: You must code these symbols exactly as they appear in the syntax diagram. * Asterisk : Colon , Comma = Equal Sign Hyphen () Parentheses . Period Variables: Highlighted lowercase items (like this) denote variables. In this example, var_name represents a variable you must specify when you code the CMDNAME command.CMDNAme var_name

Copyright IBM Corp. 1993, 2004

3

Repetition: An arrow returning to the left means that the item can be repeated. A character within the arrow means that you must separate repeated items with that character., repeat

A footnote (1) by the arrow refers to a limit that tells how many times the item can be repeated., (1) repeat

Notes: 1 Specify repeat up to 5 times.

Required Choices: When two or more items are in a stack and one of them is on the line, you must specify one item. In this example, you must choose CMDNAME=A, CMDNAME=B, or CMDNAME=C. Do not include any blanks immediately before or after the equal sign (=).CMDNAme = A B C

Optional Choices: When an item is below the line, the item is optional. In this example, you can choose CMDNAME=A or nothing at all. Do not include any blanks immediately before or after the equal sign (=).

CMDNAme = A

When two or more items are in a stack below the line, all of them are optional. In this example, you can choose CMDNAME=A, CMDNAME=B, CMDNAME=C, or nothing at all. Do not include any blanks immediately before or after the equal sign (=).

CMDNAme =

A B C

Defaults: Defaults are above the line. The system uses the default unless you override it. You can override the default by coding an option from the stack below the line. In this example, CMDNAME=A is the default. You can also code CMDNAME=A, CMDNAME=B, or CMDNAME=C. Do not include any blanks before or after the equal sign (=).

4

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for AIX: Administrators Reference

CMDNAme = CMDNAme =

A A B C

Repeatable Choices: A stack of items followed by an arrow returning to the left means that you can select more than one item or, in some cases, repeat a single item. In this example, you can choose more than one value, with each name delimited with a comma. Do not include any blanks before or after the equal sign (=)., CMDNAme = value1 value2 value3

Syntax Fragments: Some diagrams, because of their length, must fragment the syntax. The fragment name appears between vertical bars in the diagram. The expanded fragment appears in the diagram after all other parameters or at the bottom of the diagram. A heading with the fragment name identifies the expanded fragment. Commands appearing directly on the line are required. In this example, the fragment is named Fragment.Fragment

Chapter 2. Entering Administrative CommandsThis chapter contains information about entering and routing administrative commands. An administrative command includes: Command name: The command name can consist of a single action word, such as HALT, or it can consist of an action word and an object for the action, such as DEFINE DOMAIN. You can enter the entire command name or the abbreviation that is specified in the syntax diagram for the command. Positional parameters: Some commands have required or optional positional parameters. You must enter positional parameters in the order indicated in the syntax diagram for a command. For example, to copy a policy set: 1. Enter the name of the policy to which the policy set belongs 2. Enter the name of the policy set you want to copy 3. Enter the name you want to assign the copycopy policyset domain1 oldset newset

Keyword parameters: Some commands have required or optional keyword parameters. When included in a command, a keyword parameter must follow any positional parameters in the command. Use the equal sign to distinguish between the keyword and the value. A keyword parameter can provide a description of an object, identify an object (such as a storage pool or policy domain), or specify a setting for an option. You can enter either the entire keyword or the abbreviation that is identified in the syntax diagram for the command. For example, to include a description for a new policy domain, enter:define domain acctg description="accounting"

Command Entry RulesThe following are general rules for entering Tivoli Storage Manager administrative commands: v Enter a command in any column of the input line. v Unless otherwise noted, you can specify commands in any combination of uppercase and lowercase characters. v When entering a string of multi-directory names, the string needs to be enclosed within in a single set of quotes with each directory name separated by a comma. For example,"/xyz.def/abc,/efg ijk,/zck-klv"

| | | |

v If a parameter allows a list of values, enter the values immediately following the equal sign and delimit the value with a comma. For example,classes=policy,storage

v When you refer to file space names, specify the file space name by using the exact capitalization that is used by Tivoli Storage Manager. Use the QUERY FILESPACE command to find out the correct capitalization. v If a description (a string of text) for a parameter begins with a single or double quote or contains any embedded blanks or equal signs, you must surround the Copyright IBM Corp. 1993, 2004

7

value in either single (') or double (") quotation marks. The opening and closing quotation marks must be the same type of quotation marks. For example, if the opening quotation is a single quotation mark, the closing quotation mark must also be a single quotation mark. For example, to r
