THE SITUATIONIn 2017 the company developed a unified viewing experience across broadcast, catch-up, OTT, TVOD and SVOD services. When the company considered how to realize this next-gen video project, it evaluated the potential pros and cons of traditional turnkey development, the RDK open-source software, and the increasingly popular Android TV Operator Tier

Com Hem selected Android TV and engaged with 3 Screen Solutions (3SS) as overall project coordinator. Technicolor supplied an Android TV STB, and Verimatrix provided the pay-TV security.

This was a major project undertaking with unique challenges, being the world’s first large scale Android N (Nougat) deployment based on Android TV Operator Tier. The content security aspect is crucial given that Android TV is an open environment. Special care must be taken to separate the pay-TV security processing and data from the other apps in this open environment. This is a very different challenge compared to the closed environments of traditional STBs.

Sweden’s largest multichannel TV provider, Com Hem Group, operates both IPTV and cable networks and, after acquiring the terrestrial broadcaster Boxer in 2016, a DVB-T network. The company has been a leader in user interfaces since 2013 when it brought TiVo to Sweden.

Unifying the Viewing Experience Across Managed and Unmanaged Networks

In April 2018, Com Hem launched the award-winning Android TV-based platform Tv Hub, which serves both the Com Hem and Boxer subscribers. Com Hem Tv Hub is the company’s ground-breaking UHD-4K Hybrid STB, built on the Android N OS. Tv Hub combines linear content with on-demand and OTT services in UHD/4K and HDR quality, enhancing the viewer experience. With an attractive and intuitive interface, subscribers can navigate between available linear TV channels and play services. They can also personalize the Tv Hub with a choice of 2,000+ apps from the Google Play store, including play services, games, and music. Uniquely, the remote control provides exclusive buttons for Netflix and the two Swedish service providers SVT Play and TV4 Play, enabling quick access to the most popular streaming services.

In addition to the Com Hem Tv Hub, subscribers also enjoy Com Hem Play, offering TV Everywhere services to computers, smart phones and tablets, – anywhere they may travel within the EU (European Union).

Technology and Solution ProvidersApart from working closely with Google as the developer of the Android TV OS, Com Hem selected a trio of best-in-class technology and solution providers.

3SS (3 Screen Solutions) was appointed to act as overall project development and lead integration partner. It also provided the UX/UI layer that sits on top of the Android TV OS layer by means of its 3READY Android TV Custom Launcher. Android TV Operator Tier is the first OS from Google that gives service providers the pre-integrated features they are looking for, enabling shorter time-to-market, but also the control of the UX/UI layer they require to enable an operator-branded look-and-feel. The STB

boots directly to their UI, service and brand. Very important is the fact that Android TV is now DVB-ready too.

Technicolor provided the STB hardware and the all-important middleware, integrated with 3READY. It supports 4K (UHD) resolution and High Dynamic Range (HDR) for enhanced color rendering on compatible TV sets. The STB is available for Com Hem’s FibreCoax (DVB-C), FibreLAN (IPTV) and terrestrial television (DVB-T) networks. Networking support includes Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Verimatrix provided the CAS/DRM, which harnesses a Trusted Execution Environment inside the Broadcom SoC and includes security clients for the IPTV and cable networks that Com Hem operates over. Verimatrix worked closely with Com Hem and the technology partners to deliver an end-to-end solution to satisfy any security concerns. Having delivered its first OTT security client back in 2010, including an early version of Android, Verimatrix has built a solid reputation for its reliable in-house CAS/DRM clients and entitlement management support for third-party DRMs.

Beyond offering a great operator-branded experience, the open Android TV environment is a challenge as the video service provider in principle cannot control what the user does. The user can download any apps from the Google App Store and choose to watch services from competing service providers. To embrace this new world of virtually unlimited choice, Com Hem became one of the first service providers in the world to integrate Netflix SVOD services and display that app prominently, together with the Swedish broadcaster SVT and TV4 apps, and YouTube (owned by Google).

Content Security Considerations for Android TV Operator TierCom Hem decided to entrust Verimatrix with providing the end-to-end, multi-network and multi-screen content security. Verimatrix has been Com Hem’s security partner since 2014 when the two companies collaborated to launch the very successful TiVo service.

The Verimatrix Video Content Authority System, currently in its fourth generation called VCAS™ Ultra, was designed from the outset to comply with the MovieLabs specification for Enhanced Content Protection. The Android Reference Architecture now includes Conditional Access APIs, which speeds integration. The Verimatrix ViewRight security client is fully integrated into the hybrid STB and middleware, both provided by Technicolor. The STB’s advanced System-on-a-Chip (Broadcom 7271) features Hardware Root-of-Trust, a

Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), output controls, and ensures a complete separation and isolation of the pay-TV security processing and data, including decryption, from the otherwise open Android TV environment. The Verimatrix technology, which includes robust video watermarking, ensures complete content and revenue security

for Com Hem and its content providers.

The hybrid nature of this ground-breaking deployment is impressive. Com Hem is deploying the new STB for its cable and IPTV systems, with OTT services added seamlessly. This is a non-DVR deployment (Com Hem already provides a TiVo DVR service since 2013). Boxer, the pay-TV digital terrestrial operator, will use the new STB with a DVB-T front-end and OTT added in DVB-IP hybrid fashion.

Verimatrix has been providing multi-network and multi-screen content and revenue security solutions since 2010 and sports a solid track record of supporting multi-DRM solutions. In the case of Com Hem, Verimatrix delivered its MultiRights OTT solution for use with Apple Fairplay Streaming, Google Widevine and Microsoft PlayReady DRMs, in addition to the company’s VCAS for Internet TV DRM.

SAFe® Development Framework – Key to Project SuccessCom Hem together with its technology partners 3SS, Technicolor and Verimatrix, conducted the project in accordance with SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework), an experience-based development framework designed to accelerate deployments compared to the old, monolithic way of managing large projects. Verimatrix has been applying this methodology internally for many years and thus brought relevant expertise and best practices to the project. This, in and of itself, was a success story within the overall undertaking. The project was delivered in just under a year, all aspects included.

Other Verimatrix Solutions – Future Potential Add-ons With the current VCAS Ultra platform in place, Com Hem is ideally positioned to take advantage of other Verimatrix solutions such as video watermarking and video analytics, described briefly in the following.

Verimatrix offers video watermarking in two distinct solutions covering all use cases: VideoMark® client-side watermarking, and StreamMark® server-side watermarking.

Verimatrix also offers its customers the opportunity to benefit from integrated video analytics for both Quality of Experience (QoE) and business intelligence purposes, complying with the new EU GDPR regulations. The Verspective® Analytics platform is a comprehensive cloud-based SaaS solution with a focus on unifying data from a variety of systems, including STBs (IPTV and DVB-IP hybrid), all kinds of OTT and multi-screen devices, VOD servers and content delivery networks (CDN), DRM systems, including Verimatrix VCAS and data enrichment sources, such as program schedules and metadata.

THE RESULTAs the project deployed in April 2018, Com Hem Group’s 1.4 million subscribers on cable, terrestrial, IPTV and OTT began to enjoy a new and ultra-intuitive EPG, powered by 3READY from 3SS. The new Com Hem platform delivers a simple and truly intuitive experience as well as discovery of all content types including Live TV, Catch-up, SVOD, TVOD and content of partners including Netflix, SVT and TV4 under one umbrella.

Complexity is reduced and discoverability in enhanced via a new remote-control concept with state-of-the-art design combined with a trailblazing new UI and EPG that obliterates the traditional TV guide. Content for all services across all three networks and screens is secured end-to-end by the Verimatrix VCAS Ultra multi-DRM solution.
