Congratulations JambalayaAssociation, you have done itagain. This year’s 49th AnnualFestival was a huge success.

I have been attending theJambalaya Festival for 40 plusyears and this year’s festival

seemed to have it all. The food, the events, and the entertain-ment makes this event one ofthe most diversified festivalsaround.

It’s been a long time comingfor the festival to build up to the

excitement that once was heldin the streets of downtownGonzales. This year, I believe, proved to me that the festival isback and is bigger and betterthan ever.

A wide variety of entertain-

ment from bands like Eddie Smith,Mike Broussard & Nitetrain andChee Weez rocked the stage while hometown favorite bands such as Kenny Cornett, Kenny Fife and NaNa Sha kept our dancing shoesmoving. One of the highlight moments of the festival was the appearance of Snapper and the Fishsticks.

The addition of bringing in theNashville Country Star Sammy Kershaw brought record crowds.Matter-of-fact the crowds all weekend were huge.

It was exciting this year when former Champion Hoss Reine andhis son Hossfly won for a secondtime in three years the WorldChampion Jambalaya Title.

This year Scott Duplechein andhis wife Kellie worked their majicand won the Champ of ChampsCooking Contest for the first time.

Throughout my time at the festival I ran into to old school

Gonzales friends that always make a reference tothe Festival that was once downtown Gonzales.

Everybody likes to talk about the days of old.The success was judged by the garbage left inthe street. As exciting as those days were the current Jambalaya Festival represents Gonzales2016 and our community. It’s clean, organized, and full of musical entetainment.Along with the good time the festival represents a commitment to the claim JambalayaCapital of the World.

The Mini-Pot Jambalaya Cooking Contest atthe 49th Annual Jambalaya Festival was held along the Bayou and was sponsored byGonzales Memorial Post 3693.

Clear white diamonds are world fa-mous for their brilliant sparkle andfire. But surprisingly enough, diamonds also come in a rainbow ofvivid, flashing colors that add a magic look to holiday jewelry.

Colored diamonds are called “fancies”and are available in red, blue, pink, ca-nary yellow, brown, peach, orange, purple, green, violet, gray, and black. In addition, colored diamonds comein many exciting color blends such aspurplish-red, greenish-yellow, reddish-brown, greenish-blue, andbluish-pink.

Most colored diamonds are rare andmore expensive than colorless whitediamonds. Only diamonds have thebrilliant inner fire that sets them apartfrom all other gems.

More intensely colored diamonds areusually cut to ideal proportions to de-

liver maximum brilliancy and life. These cuts include round, triangle, square, and rectangular. More subtlecolored diamonds are cut in less re-fractive shapes, such as oval and radi-ant, to enhance and deepen thedelicate color.

Imagine the thrill of wearing a ring, pendant, earrings, or brooch with adazzling colored diamond centerstone flanked by sparkling white diamonds in round, baguette, square,or half-moon shapes. Spectacular colored diamond jewelry is sure tomake an impression that will be re-membered always!

BirthstonesJune - Alexandrite

A relatively modern gem, Alexandrite, was first discovered in Russia in 1831during the reign of its namesake, CzarAlexander II, and is an extremely rarechrysoberyl with chameleon-like qualities. Its color is a lovely green inboth daylight and fluorescent light; it

changes color to a purplish red in in-candescent light. Due to its rarity, some jewelers stock synthetic versionsof this enchanting gemstone. .

Did you know?Ask the Jeweler…

What is a Diamond’s Window? One of the first steps in cutting arough diamond involves polishing asmall flat section or “window” so thatthe cutter can microscopically examinethe gem’s interior. This helps the cutter decide how to get the best cut from the diamond.

What are Calibrated Gems? These are diamonds and colored gemstones that are precision cut toconform to standard or fixed sizes …sometimes to a fraction of a millimeter. This results in easiermatching and faster, more accuratesetting of the gems.

What is Silk?Silk is a term jewelers use to describevery fine, almost invisible, shimmeringstreaks in the grain of rubies and sapphires. It can only be seen under a powerful lens or polarizedlight. The presence of silk shows the gem is genuine.

Loving this LiquidLipstick!Anastasia Beverly Hills is abeauty company that’s beenaround for a quite a while. They were initially known for

their easy to use, natural browcosmetics, but now they’velaunched a line of liquid lipsticks that are some of thebest in the cosmetics game.

I recently purchased Anastasia’sliquid lipstick in Crush. Crushis a soft beige (lighter dustyrose), which I think is a greatneutral color for my lighter tomedium toned skin.

This is the first matte finish lipstick that doesn’t dry out yourlips or crumble after eating ordrinking. The formula andsponge applicator allows thisrich, full pigmented lipstick goon very precisely. You can purchase this matte finish lipproduct in a TON of colors on anastasiabeverlyhills.com for about $20.

How do youstay motivated?I enjoy working out, but sometimes it’s hard to get motivated to workout, especially after a long day atwork. I’ve thought long andhard about what might motivate me, and I came up with a few ideas.

• Surround yourself withlike minded people.

When I spend time with peoplethat workout and eat healthy, itinspires me to stay focused andon track. Find someone in yourgroup of friends that inspiresyou and follow their lead whenyou don’t feel as focused onyour health and wellness goals.

• Focus on the results.

When I don’t feel like pushinghard in my workouts or in mynutrition efforts, I focus on whyI’m committed to a lifestyle ofhealth. For me I consider howgreat I feel when I’m fit and theconfidence that brings.

• Keep positive images andthoughts around you.

When I find an inspiring imageor article, I save it, and go backto it to be inspired when I’mlow on energy. My latest inspiration is this photo.

• Don’t rely on feelings.

Sometimes you’re not going tofeel like doing the right thing. You may not always want to hitthe gym. That’s when it is time

to just make a decision and notrely on how you feel.

That’s what I’m doing to staymotivated. Keep people aroundyou that have the same goals, keep inspiring imagery aroundyou, and make a decision whenyou don’t feeling like pushingyourself.

“I'm not a smoker, but I have"smoker lines" above my top lip. What is the best course of action to correct these lines? I've heardfillers, but I do not want my lips to look fuller, just the lines filled in.”

Non-smokers get “smoker lines” aroundthe mouth usually from the way they movetheir mouth when talking but culprits likedrinking out of a straw, sun exposure andpoor skin care play a major role in theselines”. Certainly, you can use fillers likeJuvederm and Restylane to improve theselines. Fillers do not necessarily make yourlips looks larger; it is all how it is injected.Another option is very small amounts ofBotox. Botox can relax muscles around themouth to soften your fine lines. This treatment is repeated every 2-3 months.Other options include appropriate skin care, chemical peels, microneedling devices andlaser resurfacing.

“My pores are so big! What can I do to shrink them?”

Pores are a reflection of several environmental, physiologic, and genetic factors. Contrary to the beauty industry, there is no single product or treatment thatwill universally improve pores. The best wayto treat large, clogged pores is by using aretinol or prescription-strength tretinoincream (Retin-A). Not only doesretinol/tretinoin creams help with largepores but they also help with fine lines, acnescarring and uneven pigmentation. I havefound that Skin Pen microneedling

treatments combined with light chemicalpeels work well to reduce pore size. Thesetreatments have minimal to no downtimeand are great for all skin types. Properhomecare will also help in diminishingpores if used daily as part of a good healthy regime.

“Why is my face so splotchy?”

Uneven skin tone, or hyperpigmentation, isthe result of an over production of melanin.Melanin is what gives skin and hair its color, helps protect skin against damaging UVlight and absorbs heat from the sun. However, an overproduction of melaninstimulated by excessive sun exposure, hormones, or scarring, leads to an uneven complexion.

1) Sun exposure: When skin is repeatedlyexposed to UV light, sun damage occurs.Brown spots appear as a result of too muchmelanin being produced to help protectskin from UV light.

2) Hormones: Melasma is hormone-relatedhyperpigmentation caused by increased hormone stimulation. It is most commonlyexperienced by women who are pregnant(which is why it’s also known as the “maskof pregnancy”) or taking contraceptives, but can also be a reaction to cosmetics ormedications.

3) Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation:This is a darkening of skin that’s the resultof scarring, which can be caused by acne orskin injury.

Using Trust for MedicaidPlanning: (Part 2)

After interrupting this two-part se-ries on trusts to highlight Prince’sdeath and his lack of estate planning, this month we aregoing to pick up where we left offin March with further information about using trusts for Medicaid and VA planning.

As we discussed in March, irrevocable trusts are often created for Medicaid planning toremove assets from a person’s estate since assets held in that manner are not considered available to the Medicaid

applicant if he needs Medicaid topay for nursing home care. However, as we also discussed, transferring assets into a trust willcreate a penalty period where theMedicaid applicant will not be eligible for Medicaid for a period oftime. This penalty period will beimposed for any transfers made to atrust within five years of applyingfor Medicaid. This penalty period isoften a trap for the unwary. Thereare also many other aspects of trustplanning that require specialized knowledge and that can causeproblems if not handled correctly.

Trust taxation is one of those areas.Trusts can be taxed in several ways and understandingtrust taxation before engaging intrust planning is essential. Typically, a trust is a separate taxpaying entity and it gets its owntax identification number and mustfile its own income tax return. However, depending on the type oftrust, income taxes may be paid atthe trust level or they may be paidby the beneficiaries of the trust.Trusts reach the highest tax rate ata much lower income level than doindividuals so choosing the righttype of trust to minimize incometaxes is very important.

There is even a type of trust, called

a “grantor” trust, where the income taxes are paid by the indi-viduals who created the trust eventhough they no longer have any access to the assets held in thetrust. A “grantor” trust is oftenused in Medicaid planning.

A special needs trust is also notconsidered a resource for Medicaid purposes so it is also usedfor Medicaid planning in certaincircumstances. A special needs trustis often used for a disabled benefi-ciary under the age of 65. Although the principal of this typeof trust may be used for the Medicaid recipient it is not acountable resource because of special laws applicable to thoseconsidered disabled according to SSA guidelines.

Trusts may also be used for thoseapplying for VA Aid and Attendance benefits. Like Medicaid, Aid and Attendance isonly available to those who havelimited assets and trusts are oftenused to meet the asset require-ments for this program. UnlikeMedicaid, VA does not currentlyhave a look back period for transferring assts to a trust. However, a 3-year look back period is likely to be imposedas early as this year.

Although VA does not currentlyhave a look back period, a“grantor” trust that is acceptablewhen used for Medicaid planning,

may cause ineligibility for VA benefits. Since the income from theassets held in the “grantor” trustwill show up on the income tax return of the person who createdthe trust, the VA may consider thistrust an available asset even thoughthat person has no ability to accessany of the trust’s assets. The VAhas also considered assets held in aspecial needs trust as available as-sets for the beneficiary even thoughMedicaid law is clear that the assetsheld in that type of trust are notavailable for Medicaid purposes.

Trusts are not “one size fits all”and a trust that may work for Medicaid planning may not workfor VA planning. Additionally, complicated tax rules apply totrusts so they must be carefullydrafted and administered if they areto work as intended. Althoughtrusts are important planning toolsfor protecting assets from the highcosts of long-term care, I cannotoveremphasize how important it isto consult with professionals well-versed in trust law and taxation before engaging in any type of trust planning to protectyour family and your assets.

Maybe you’ve heard the Google

announcement of the new mobile

- friendly algorithm; or maybe

you’ve actually experienced the

consequences. Then again maybe

you have not the slightest clue

what Google is doing and how it

may affect your website. Let me

explain. The point of the

algorithm is supposed to increase

the effect of mobile - friendly

ranking signals.

This is something Google rolled

out gradually, so it wouldn’t be a

major drop off on non-mobile

friendly websites when they

actually push the algorithm out.

The mobile - friendly algorithm

was designed as a page - by - page

signal, therefore it could take time

for Google to get to each

page. This also explains why it

took time for the update to

roll out fully.

Depending on how fast Google

indexes the pages on your site,

you may have noticed a drop in

your mobile search results earlier

in the month or you may just

now notice it. Well, that is if

you’re someone who doesn’t have

a mobile friendly site. On the

bright side it was stated that if

you have a really well written

website you’re ranking may not

drop at all or by much.

Google maybe in a way penalizing

those sites that aren’t mobile -

friendly but they are offering you

something that can help you end

that penalty. They have also

launched a mobile - friendly

testing tool. All you have to do is

put in your website and it will tell

you within a few seconds if you

have a mobile friendly site or not.

If it turns out you don’t, well that

sucks. But on the bright side

you’re now aware of that and can

work towards making sure your

site is a mobile - friendly one.

Wisdom TeethBy Calvin Bessonet, DDS,FAGD

Wisdom teeth, also known asthird molars, are the last teeth toerupt in your mouth. This gener-ally occurs between the ages of 17and 25, a time of life that has beencalled the "Age of Wisdom."

Anthropologists note that therough diet of early humans re-sulted in the excessive wear of theirteeth. Normal drifting of the teethto compensate for this wear en-sured that space was available formost wisdom teeth to erupt byadolescence. The modern diet, which is much softer, and the pop-ularity of orthodontic toothstraightening procedures produce afuller dental arch, which quite commonly doesn't leave room forthe wisdom teeth to erupt, therebysetting the stage for problemswhen the final four molars enterthe mouth.

What is an Impacted Tooth?

Complications such as infection, damage to adjacent teeth and theformation of cysts may arise fromimpacted teeth.

A tooth becomes impactedwhen there is a lack of space in thedental arch and its growth anderuption are prevented by overlying gum, bone or another tooth.

How Serious is an Impacted Tooth?

Impacted teeth can be painfuland lead to infection. They mayalso crowd or damage adjacentteeth or roots.

More serious problems mayoccur if the sac surrounding theimpacted tooth becomes filled withfluid and enlarges to form a cyst.As the cyst grows it may hollow out the jaw and permanently damage adjacentteeth, the surrounding bone andnerves. Rarely, if a cyst is not treated, a tumor may develop from its walls and a more serioussurgical procedure may be requiredto remove it.

Despite the considerable concern regarding impacted thirdmolars, a recent study finds thatthird molars which have brokenthrough the tissue and eruptedinto the mouth in a normal, up-right position may be as prone todisease as those third molars thatremain impacted.

Must the Tooth Come Out if it Hasn't Caused Any Prob-lems Yet?

Not all problems related to thirdmolars are painful or visible. Damage can occur withoutyour being aware of it.

As wisdom teeth grow, theirroots become longer, the teeth be-come more difficult to remove andcomplications become more likely.

In addition, impacted wisdom teeth are more likely tocause problems as patients age.No one can predict when thirdmolar complications will occur, butwhen they do, the circumstances can be much morepainful and the teeth more difficult to treat.

When Should I Have My Wis-dom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom teeth are easier to re-move when the patient is younger, since their roots are not completely formed, the surrounding bone is softer, andthere is less chance of damagingnearby nerves or other structures.Removal of wisdom teeth at a laterage becomes more complicated asthe roots have fully developed(may involve the nerve), and the jawbone is denser.

It isn't wise to wait until yourwisdom teeth start to bother you.In general, earlier removal of wisdom teeth results in a less complicated healing process.

The AAOMS study strongly recommends that wisdom teeth beremoved by the time the patient isa young adult in order to preventfuture problems and to ensure op-timal healing. The researchersfound that older patients may be atgreater risk for disease, including periodontitis, in the tissues surrounding the third mo-

lars and adjacent teeth. Periodontalinfections, such as those observedin this study, may affect your gen-eral health.

What Happens During Sur-gery?

Before surgery, your dentist will discuss with you what to ex-pect. This is a good time to ask questions or express your concerns. It is especially importantto let the doctor know about anyillness you have and medicationsyou are taking.

The relative ease with which awisdom tooth may be removed de-pends on several conditions, in-cluding the position of the toothand root development. Most wisdom tooth extractions are performed in the office under localanesthesia, oral or intravenous se-dation. Your dentist will discuss the anesthetic option that is right for you.

What Happens after Surgery?

Following surgery, you may experience some swelling and milddiscomfort, which are part of thenormal healing process. Cold compresses may help decrease theswelling, and medication prescribed by your dentist can helpmanage the discomfort. You maybe instructed to modify your dietfollowing surgery and laterprogress to more normal foods.

Mini Pot Contest Grows with New Sponsor

Gonzales Memorial Post 3693

The Mini-Pot JambalayaCooking Contest at the49th Annual Jambalaya Festival was held along theBayou and was sponsored byGonzales Memorial Post 3693.

This year the event wasmoved across the bayou behind Harry Robert Insurance. As I took photosthe size of the crowd andnumbers of cooks seem toexpand to more cooks than I have ever seen before.

At first my concern aboutthe event was the lost of theshade trees from across thestreet however Loisianacooks have thew ability toadapt with tents and space. In reality I liked how spreadout everything was andsome cooking secrets werekept without contestaantslooking over their shoulder.

This month I have focusedphotos on the youth of theevent. Next month I will display photos of the adults.

I will have all results in my months issue.

Congratulations to all thecooks and many thanks toVFW Gonzales MemorialPost 3693 for taking onsuch a noble event.

I'm basically a loner when itcomes to being out-of-doors. Ireally don't want a big crowd ofpeople with me while I'm hunt-ing or fishing. As I grow older Itend to have a little more com-pany nearby for safety reasons. Ireally believe fishing by yourselfis the most relaxing sport of all.I enjoy the comaraderie ofgoing in the woods with a cou-ple others but I'm going to splitfrom them as soon as we reachthe point of entry. Squirrel, turkey, deer and even ducks aregame that I'd rather pursuealone. Now don't get mewrong, I have and will in the fu-ture, continue to bring my chil-dren, grandchildren and spousealong with me at certain times. For many years of my life I wassurrounded by camera peoplefor the filming of our outdoorT.V. show, Ascension Outdoors. This made me somewhat un-comfortable at times but someoutings just have too many peo-ple.

Duck guides today try to putas many clients as they can inthe blind at one time. This isprobably done to accommodateeveryone and make moremoney. In a lot of cases youreardrums take a pounding andwhen a duck does fall you don'treally know who hit it. To methat's not a prime time outing.

In the past couple of years Iknow of at least two people whohave been shot while rabbithunting. These wounds, thankGod, we're not life threatening. But an inch here or there andthey could have been. The mainproblem was too many peopleon the hunt. Rabbit dog menare held out of the woods bydeer hunters for the biggest partof the season, but when deerseason closes we all want thesepeople to take us on a bunnyhunt. These guys try to accom-

modate and by doing so end upwith too many people on thehunt.

Guided fishing trips can alsobecome infested with too manyfolks. Not all guides, but quite afew would rather fish thanguide. This situation creates an-other fisherman, while you areleft scrambling around in theboat, competing with the otherfishermen. Not to mentioncompeting with rods in holdersand looking for a place to castfrom.

There's nothing more disap-pointing than to enter thewoods for a nice quite fall out-ing and be surrounded by alarge congregation of peoplewho were hoping for a peacefulquite day also. Many manage-ment areas have instituted lot-tery hunts to help withovercrowding. Most huntingclubs have more members thanthey should have to pay the costof the lease. Our world has be-come populated outside of thewoods and water. As mentors ofour wonderful sport it is veryimportant that we bring newpeople into our outdoor world. But to this day after severalhunts or fishing trips with familyand friends I truly enjoy beingby myself....

Till Next Time,

Enjoy Your Solitude

While sitting out still anotherendless weather delay duringLSU baseball’s post season play,I decided to catch up on theplethora of mail-okay, a coupleof e-mails and a postcard-we receive here at Ascension Magazine.

First, from one of my oldpugilist pals…

Hey, Wild Bill,I know you were around

during the Ali-Frazier-Foremanglory years when the heavy-weight championship still meantsomething. What is it you willremember most about “The Greatest”? Tee Kayo.

Dear Tee,Hope your glass eye,

cauliflower ear and broken jawaren’t causing you much griefthese days. I think the biggestimpression Ali made on me as ateen in the 60’s was that he waspredicting the round he wouldknock out opponents-and doingit with rhyme.

Granted, the first one I remember was against an agingArchie Moore (to paraphraseEddie Murphy in the classic barbershop scene in “Comingto America”-“Yeah, but he was150 years old”.) when Ali could

have almost named the round. But he had told reporters,

“When you come to the fight, don’t block the door, Causeyou’ll all be home after roundnumber four.” Of course, heknocked Moore out in thefourth round.

Ali’s prediction of a fifth-round KO of British championHenry Cooper (“If he don’tstop all that English jive, I’llknock him out in round number five.”) seemed in jeopardy when Cooper flooredthe champ with a vicious lefthook at the end of the fourthround. Somehow, Ali managedto get up at the bell and wenton to stop Cooper on a TKO in the fifth-“…the worst cutI’ve seen in all me years of boxing…” as the British announcer so eloquently put it.

Even after the exact roundpredictions ended, the poetrycontinued. Before his firstchampionship fight against themenacing Sonny Liston, Ali-a 7-1 underdog in Vegas-correctly prophesized,“The crowd did not dreamwhen they put up the money,That they would see a totaleclipse of the Sonny.”

And he infuriated rival JoeFrazier with “It will be a thrillaand a killa when I get the Gorilla in Manilla” before theirhistoric third meeting.

When Ernie Terrell refused torecognize Ali’s Muslim name(Back to the barbershop, “Hismama call him Clay, I call himClay”.), the champion warned,“Terrell will catch hell from thesound of the bell…”

And not even Christmas carols were sacred when Alitook on Zora Folley.

“While you deck the hallswith balls of holly, I’ll deck thering with Zora Folley,” hechanted.

He even had spinoffs of his famous “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, How can youhit what you can’t even see…”lines including, “When GeorgeForeman meets me, he’ll pay hisdebt, I can run through a hurricane and don’t get wet”.

Ali is even credited with creating the shortest poem everwritten when he improvised acouplet for a Harvard audiencewho requested a rhyme in1975. The Greatest paused fora moment a delivered flawlessly,“Me? Whee!”

Only Ali.Our second correspondence

comes from one of my track ratbuddies who still owes memoney from the 1999 Breeders Cup…

investment group make out onthe Triple Crown? Andy Capper.

Dear Andy,As long as you just didn’t piss

that money away, that’s okay byme. Our 7-man cartel eachpicked a horse in the KentuckyDerby and we boxed them inthe trifecta and superfecta hoping for some longshots at aprice of $1,050. The goodnews? We hit both the tri (firstthree) and the super (first four). The bad news is that the four favorite public betting interestscame in 1-2-3-4 for the firsttime in recent history and weended up losing $4OO.

Not to be outdone, we wagered the remaining 650 onthe Preakness wheeling the favorite Nyquist over severallongshots. When Nyquist ranlike he was on Nyquil, we wereleft-as Al Kling used to say-withnothing but a wet mule in the

rain.At last Saturday’s

Belmont, I went “Delaune Wolf” routeand threw out the favorite Exaggeratorcompletely. He provedmy “tired horse” theory as the 11 horsein the 11th race finished 11th. I havealso seen trainer SteveAsmussen’s tricks fortoo many years andwhen he inserted a“rabbit” in the race-ahorse with no chanceof winning but enteredto take the lead and insure a fast pace-I immediately bet hisother horse-a big-timecloser named Creator.

It must have been“Grey Pride” day in

New York because the threegrey horses finished 1-2-3 withCreator winning by a very shortnose at 16-1. I picked up apretty good chunk of changewith a win-place-show ticketand an exacta bet on him andDestin, the second-place finisher. Naturally, I would haveliked to have hit the tri whichpaid over $2,700 and the superwhich was over $20,000 but bethankful for small favors.

And be especially thankful fora rare victory at the track where

on most occasions, the windowsclean you.

Our third letter came via“snail mail” so you know it wasn’t from any youngster…

What’s up, Sweet William,How did that 50th

Dutchtown class reunion go for

you? Did y’all make it past 8 p.m.? Odie B. Goodie.

Dear Odie,Strong words from a man

who was a waiter at the LastSupper. A good time was hadby all with good friends, goodfood and bad memories. I evenheard some of the stories in mydeaf ear. Here are a couple ofmy favorites…

One of my classmates whodid not attend was EugeneMarchand who was born andraised on the Mississippi Riverand lives there to this day. Oneday, a representative from theBoard of Health came to speakto our class about trash disposal. Now in those days, there was nogarbage pickup so everyone justburned their trash-usually in abin behind the house. This guywas anti-burning so when heasked how many of us used thisfiery method to get rid ofgarbage, almost everyone raisedhis or her hand. Except, of

course, for Eugene. The manwas glad to see that he had oneprogressive in the class and heasked Blue what his family didwith their trash.

The river rat looked the bureaucrat straight in the eyeand replied ever so eloquently,“Just chunk it back da levee…”Next question?

And the last one-a rain-soaked-or maybe tear-soaked-letter from Alex Box Stadium…

Damn, Bill,What happened to our Tigers?

There goes our trip to Omaha.Ellis Hugh.

Dear Ellis,You already know what a poor

loser I am. But let’s try to accentuate some positives.First, thanks to Ascension Magazine’s press passes, I hadgreat seats-and parking-andMike Strong’s cousin Jimmytook these fabulous photoswhich accompany this story-even though it was supposed tobe a happy ending.

Secondly, this team probablyoverachieved with only one returning everyday player fromlast year’s team.

And third, think how manybeers you’ll be able to win inbar trivia when a couple of yearsfrom now you ask, “Who werethe last two teams-and mascots-to beat LSU in a Super Regional?” Not many peoplecan say they got ousted by Seawolves (Stony Brook) andChanticleers (Coastal Carolina).

Now, how long did your say itwas until football season?

Publisher’s Note: Thank YouJimmy Dunkley for weatheringthe rain and coming up withsome great photos.

They aim to take you on a musical journey…The voyage began one night just over eight years ago when some friendsfrom a few successful, local bands got together for some fun. They’dmeet over the years at jam sessions and live performances. Some ofthem had played together in various other groups. For quite some timethese friends talked about, perhaps, playing together…

Thus, on a Monday night they got together to jam and subsequentlyformed a strong bond. Shortly after that night this newly formed bondbecame a band. And they call their musical journey, Voyage!Voyage is an exciting, entertaining, high-energy band that communicatesmusically with its audiences. They specialize in serving up hot R&B tuneswith sides of rock, blues, and even Zydeco. Audiences feel the passion ofthe music produced by Voyage and respond by dancing, clapping theirhands, snapping their fingers, tapping their feet, singing along, etc. Feeding upon the energy from the audience participation results in Voyageperforming at even higher levels - good times are had by all!

The front man and lead communicator in Voyage, supplying soulful vocalsis lead singer, Tony Wells. Jacob Cobb thrills crowds with his electrifyingriffs on lead guitar. Jacob Butler’s expressive keyboard work soothes andstimulates simultaneously. Reggie Wickham is responsible for laying

down the funky, rhythmic grooves on bass. Stoney Trahan on drums furnishes the beat supporting the signature sound of Voyage. Forlagniappe, they sometimes add tenor sax player, Terrance West, who adds his energetic style of sophisticated soul to the Voyage sound.

Voyage performs at clubs, private parties, festivals, weddings, corporate events, and casinos.

Baton Rouge-based, Voyage performs all over southern Louisiana at venues in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette, St. Francisville, Houma,Covington, etc. and occasionally beyond Louisiana’s borders in Alabamaand Mississippi. You can catch Voyage locally at Park Place in Gonzales. So when you see “Voyage” on the Park Place marquee (or any marquee for that matter), drop on in and laissez les bons temps rouler!

Voyage is scheduled to perform again at Park Placeon Saturday, July 16th and Friday, Sept. 9th.

Recently, I have noticed country music creating lots ofsongs using a play on words andsending mixed messages withthe lyrics in their songs.

George Strait sang, “She letherself go” and Tim McGrawsang lyrics, “back when a Hoewas a hoe.” I’ll tell you a storyabout my hoe.

Last year I stopped beingcheap, for one day, and spentthe extra money to get the besthoe in town. I dropped $25 onthis hoe and haven’t regretted itone minute, however it hasbeen the subject of some prettyentertaining conversation.

My cell phone rang just after I

had purchased the hoe and mybuddy on the phone asked.“What are you doing?” Proudof my purchase, I simply toldhim I had gone to town andpicked up a $25 hoe. He said,“A Ho, Where?” I responded,“At a local western store.” Ithen told him, “They have thebest hoes in town and once Ihad my hands on this hoe I wasn’t letting it go so don’t tryto borrow my hoe and go getyour own hoe.”

In his confusion his responsewas, “Hold on Bully. I never, ever, considered sharing a Ho

with you, you pervert”. Realizing he was confused I

thought I’d play it up a bit. Itold him I was bringing my hoeto the hunting camp and passing the hoe around and letting all my buddies use it asmuch they wanted. Hell, throwmy hoe in the back of yourtruck and carry it in the woodsif you want.

“What a friend! Where’s your camp?”

I couldn’t hold on any longerI had to tell him the truth. Itwasn’t a Ho, Ho. It was a hoe, hoe. Not to be confused with aYoo Hoo.

However, I did go to thecamp with my hoe and the playon words continued to flowright off the tongue.

When I arrived at the campBubba said, “Damn look at thathoe. I’m takin’ that hoe homewith me.”

Questions and statementswere made. “Are you leavingthat hoe at the camp?” “We canall use a good hoe like that.”“Your hoe is going to help meburn some black iron pots.”“I’m taking your hoe to mydeer stand.” “Somebody get the

hoe to do this.” “Damn it. I leftyour hoe in the woods.” “OW!!I tripped over your hoe.”

I have never been so proud ofa hoe and yes, I left it at thecamp through the winter.

Well it’s spring and I wasmissing my hoe. So I went tothe camp and picked up thehoe. I laid it down and tied it tothe flooring of my trailer andgave it a ride.

Once home, I gave my hoe agood cleaning, scrubbed itdown, and introduced it to mygirl friend. I now have my girlfriend using my hoe and sheknows how to work a hoe. Her father taught her to use a hoe along time ago. She said she hasused some rickecty hoes in herday but this was the best hoeshe has had her hands on in along time.

I was working in my gardenthe other day and my sweetheart called me on my celland asked, “What Cha Doing?”I simply replied, “Me and myhoe are hoeing around, Howabout you?”
