Volume 57 No. 2 September-October 2016 Our 92nd Year
My Brothers in Christ,
By the time you get this the summer will be coming to a
close. It’s been a pretty warm one or do we just say that every
year. In a few months we will be complaining it’s too cold.
We have had several successful events including The
Joseph Barry Golf Classic (thank you to PGK Gerard
Mulholland and all committee members), the Hicksville Street
Fair, and Oldies Night with the Acchords (thank you Brian
Dunker and all committee members). We had over 170 folks
at Oldies Night.
These next two months will have our Installation of Officers (9/6), The 9/11 Remembrance with
the Fire Department, the JBC Soccer Challenge for our youngsters (9/24), the 4th Degree
Exemplification (If you’re not a 4th degree maybe you should consider it) (10/9) and the PGK
Testimonial (please consider attending to show your appreciation to Rich Burg) (10/22).
The C & B program continues for 2016-2017. If you haven’t done so, please send your completed
books as soon as possible. We will be holding a Membership Drive and selling C&B books at St. Ignatius
Church after all the masses on the weekends 9/10/2016 and 9/24/2016. Please come out and help us on
these two weekends.
As I said in the last Discoverer, this year can only be a success if you get involved. Please try to come
to a meeting and consider helping on one of the many committees/events we have at Joseph Barry
throughout the year.
Vivat Jesus

Now and at the Hour of Our Death
Catholic Guidance for End-of-Life Decision
Making is available at a new website from the New
York State Catholic Conference
at: catholicendoflife.org
“So many families struggle with moral, ethical,
and legal questions when a loved one is terminally
ill or seriously injured. It is my fervent hope that this
site provides them with clear explanations and
practical guidance that will comfort and peace as
the end of life draws near.”
Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop
of New York, Chairman-elect, USCCB
Pro-Life Committee
Talking about death and dying can be difficult
and uncomfortable, yet perhaps no conversations
are more profound or necessary for all of us. The
fact is that most of us will face challenging
decisions regarding treatment and care at the end
of life, either for ourselves or our family members.
This website is designed to offer Catholics moral
clarity and guidance on the Church’s teachings
regarding end-of-life decision making. Illness and
aging, coupled with rapid advances in medical
technology, can lead to heightened anxiety when
health care decisions must be made. We hope that
this site will help you to navigate the end-of-life
questions and challenges that you and/or your
loved ones may face, and bring peace to a
stressful situation. It provides links to trustworthy
resources, guidance, and support from Catholic
sources all across the country.

The Joseph Barry Council, Knights of Columbus will again be distributing food for the needy at Thanksgiving time. This year the Human Services Office has asked us to include canned hams along with turkeys to fill our baskets. Some families find it more convenient to put a canned ham on the table instead of a full sized turkey. So when the supermarkets do their promotions for Thanksgiving, please think of the less fortunate and pick up a ham or turkey and donate it to the Council. If you are one of our out of town members or one of our generous local members, who would like to sponsor a basket for a needy family, all you have to do is send a check for $25.00 (or
more), made out to the Knights of Columbus Thanksgiving Committee. This will help us tremendously in reaching our goal. Please help us make this Thanksgiving food donation a success and help the Joseph Barry Council keep this program alive. During the week of November 14th to November 18th you can drop off your frozen turkey or canned ham at the Council between the hours of 3PM and 9 PM. If you have any difficulty bringing your donation to the Council, please call me, Brian Lee, at 516 749-4368 and I will be happy to pick it up.
Thank you in advance Brian Lee
ADOPT A BIRD FOR THANKSGIVING 2016
C& B Kicks Off for 2016
The Council began the 2016 C&B Campaign by
mailing chance books to all the membership. Please
return these as soon as possible.
In July members of the Council sold books at the
Street Fair as shown in the picture above. We were
joined by some of our local representatives.
We will continue the campaign in September by
selling chances following the masses at St. Ignatius
on the weekends of September 10/11 and 24/25.
Please help with this effort by volunteering to sell
chances at one or more of the masses.

Sick & Distressed Please remember in your prayers:
Protecting Your Family… Business?
You already know that the Knights of Columbus
is here for all your personal and family financial
protection needs, but did you know that the Order
can help secure your business too? As your Knights
of Columbus field agent, I can help you protect the
continuity of your business for years to come.
Business insurance is the term used in the
insurance industry to describe the use of life
insurance and disability income insurance to solve
certain financial needs of businesses and their
owners. The products offered through the Order can
cover many needs, such as:
• Economic loss to the business when a key
employee dies
• Disposition of a business owner’s interest
upon death or other separation from the
business
If you’ve worked hard to establish a business,
you owe it to yourself and your family to learn about
the opportunities that the Knights of Columbus can
offer.
With protection for the family, the business, the
farm, retirement, long term care and disability
coverage, the Knight of Columbus truly is your shield
for all the elements of your life.
