The Capricorn 2000EX™ weather station’s modular design provides professionalgrade data capture, storage and transfer. Designed around the Control Module,this flexible modular system can easily accept signal inputs from a wide varietyof meteorological sensors.

Data is viewed using the Weather Display Console and/or computer softwareconnected to the Control Module via dual RS-232 ports. Internet-ready weatherdata and industrial protocols are available through the Weather MicroServer.

CONTROL MODULEHoused in a compact, utility-grade or weatherproof enclosure, the Control Module includesa data logger storing up to 511 records at user-defined intervals with time and date stamp.Max/Min information is also stored at user-defined intervals. Dual on-board RS-232 inter-faces allow connection to a display console, modem, or directly to a computer at the sametime.

BAROMETRIC PRESSUREHoused in the Control Module, the barometric pressure sensor is a silicon shear stress straingauge. This state-of-the-art sensor integrates on-chip, bipolar op amp circuitry and thin filmresistor networks to provide a high-level analog output signal and true temperature compensa-tion. The on-chip integration results in high reliability and accuracy. The sensor is calibrated atthe factory NIST traceable standard.

RELATIVE HUMIDITYThis capacitive sensor is compact and easy to use. It can be installed in aradiation shield for protection from the elements. This sensor offers long-termstability with minimal drift and resistance to contamination.

WIND DIRECTION AND SPEEDThe Capricorn 2000EX features a durable aluminum/stainless steel wind sensor assem-bly. The wind direction sensor offers superior resolution and accuracy. The wind speedsensor is rated up to 160 MPH.

The wind direction sensor uses a precision potentiometer while the wind speed sensoruses a sealed reed switch.

RAINFALLThe tipping bucket electronic rain gaugeis composed of a complex spun collec-tor funnel with a knife edge that divertsthe water to a tipping bucket mecha-nism. For each tip, a magnet causes anelectronic pulse to be recorded. Therainfall sensor is completely automaticand requires no servicing.

LEAF WETNESSMeasured with a capacitance grid, this propri-etary leaf wetness sensor provides a precise,high resolution scale, not just wet or dry. It isuseful to determine the wetness condition ofsurfaces including foliage, or example, inpreparation for spraying pesticides.

TEMPERATUREThe Capricorn 2000EX™ comes stan-dard with one temperature sensor and50 feet of cable. Up to four temperaturesensors can be connected with amaximum of 400 feet combined cablelength. These digital, semiconductor-type probes all connect to a singleport, reducing susceptibility to noiseinterference, reducing cost, andincreasing accuracy. The sensors arecalibrated at the factory.

The relative humidity sensor is a capacitive polymer sensor. The humiditysensor elements’ construction provides excellent resistance to wetting, dust,dirt, oils, and common environmental chemicals.

Barometric Pressure

The barometric pressure sensor is a stable transducer using nano-technology,yielding a linear and repeatable sensor with low hysteresis. The piezoresistivepressure sensor module is mounted on a small electronic circuit board.

A microcontroller controls the operation of the sensor and the data interface.The microcontroller polls the pressure sensor module once per second for thebarometric pressure and ambient temperature. The raw readings are tempera-ture corrected by the microcontroller.

Wind Measurement

A unique folded-path, low-power sonic anemometer operates on the principlethat the speed of the wind affects the time it takes for sound to travel fromone point to a second point. If the sound is traveling in the direction of thewind, then the transit time is decreased. If the sound is traveling in a directionopposite the wind, then the transit time is increased.

Fluxgate Compass

The internal compass module is low power and compact. It employs a pair ofmagneto-inductive sensors which change inductance with varying magneticfield strengths, to sense the Earth’s magnetic field.

The microprocessor measures the output of the internal compass and thencorrects wind direction data for the orientation of the sensor. The output of thewind direction is relative to magnetic North. A user programmable value ofMagnetic Declination may be entered through terminal mode to enable outputrelative to True North rather than Magnetic North.

Optional Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge

Complex spun collector funnel with a knife edge that diverts the water to atipping bucket mechanism. For each tip, a magnet causes an electronic pulsethat is recorded. The rainfall sensor is completely automatic - spent waterdrains out of the bottom of the housing, requiring no servicing.

Communication ProtocolsXMLXML (Extensible Markup Language) is a markup language designed totransport and store data.

The Weather MicroServer serves an XML page that contains currentweather parameter values. It can also FTP the XML page to a web or FTPserver on the Internet.

The XML page contains tags for all the selected parameters and currentvalues.

FTPThe Weather MicroServer can use FTP to upload XML and CSV files to awebsite at 15 second intervals.

SNMP - Simple Network Management ProtocolThe Weather MicroServer has a built-in SNMPv2 interface for communica-tion with network management systems.

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an application layerprotocol that facilitates the exchange of management information betweennetwork devices. It is part of the Transmission Control Protocol/InternetProtocol (TCP/IP) protocol suite. SNMP enables network administrators tomanage network performance, find and solve network problems, andexchange data.

A MIB file is provided on our website and in the MicroServer user interface.

ModbusThe Weather MicroServer has a built-in Modbus/TCPand RTU interfaces for communication with industrialautomation systems and OPC servers.

Modbus is a serial communications protocol used withprogrammable logic controllers (PLCs). The WeatherMicroServer uses Modbus/TCP for connections overEthernet (TCP/IP).

Using a Modbus OPC Server, the MicroServer canprovide OPC data access. We offer the KEPServerEXModbus OPC Server Suite.

Weather MicroServer™The Weather MicroServer is a self-contained, proprietarycomputer utilizing an embedded Linux operating system. Itcreates an “Internet-ready” weather monitoring system byautomatically providing FTP output, XML web service, andInternet browser user interface.



Two serial ports offer interface to both the Weather DisplayConsole and additional peripheral devices or sensors suchas visibility and solar radiation.



The visibility sensor measures atmosphericvisibility (meteorological optical range) by determin-

ing the amount of light scattered by particles (smoke,dust, haze, fog, rain, and snow) in the air that pass

through the optical sample volume. A 42-degree forward scatterangle is used to ensure performance over a wide range ofparticle sizes.

The pyranometer or solar radiationsensor measures the shortwaveradiation reaching the Earth's surface.

The self-cleaning convex lens measures evenlow-angle radiation directly from the sun in themorning and evening. The dome-shaped headprevents water accumulation.

Weather MicroServer™Required with the Pulsar Weather Station, the WeatherMicroServer converts the sensor data into a format thatcan be monitored through the MicroServer’s userinterface, the Weather Display Console and/or WeatherMaster Software. The Weather MicroServer creates an“Internet-ready” weather monitoring system by automati-cally providing FTP output, XML web service, andInternet browser user interface.


The Weather MicroServer has datalogging capability. It con-nects to your network with an included Ethernet cable.

The Weather MicroServer can provide real-time weather data toWeatherMaster Software over the network. This allows users tosimultaneously monitor the weather using WeatherMaster onany network computer.

Sensor DescriptionsWind Speed and Direction

The wind meter uses four ultrasonic sensors which take cyclical measurementsin all directions. The resulting wind speed and direction are calculated from themeasured run-time sound differential.

Air Temperature and Humidity

Temperature is measured by way of a highly accurate NTC-resistor whilehumidity is measured using a capacitive humidity sensor. To help mitigate theeffects of external influences (e.g. solar radiation), these sensors are situated ina fan-aspirated housing.

Air Pressure

Absolute air pressure is measured with a built-in micro-electro-mechanicalsensor (MEMS). The relative air pressure referenced to sea level is calculatedusing the barometric formula configured with local altitude input by the user.

Precipitation

The Model 600 precipitation sensor works with a 24GHz Doppler radar, whichmeasures drop speed and calculates precipitation quantity and type by correlat-ing drop size and speed.

Model 601 utilitizes a tipping-bucket rain gauge. An optional leaf wetness sensorcan be added to the 601.

Solar Radiation

The thermopile sensor construction measures the solar energy that is receivedfrom the total solar spectrum and the whole hemisphere (180 degrees field ofview).

Compass

The integrated electronic compass can be used to orient the sensor housingand automatically correlate wind direction.
