Chers amis,

L’image choisie cette année pour illustrer le Festival des Écrivains du Monde organisé par l’université Columbia et la Bibliothèque nationale de France est issue des collections magistrales de la BnF.

Ce parchemin datant de la fin du Moyen Âge représente une Terre ballottée de tous côtés et reflète à la perfection la situation périlleuse dans laquelle le monde se trouve aujourd’hui. L’humanité et la planète elle-même sont menacées sur tous les fronts : changement climatique, inégalités en tous genres, intolérance croissante et parfois meurtrière, guerres, populations civiles forcées à fuir et à se réfugier par millions dans les pays voisins, pour ne citer que quelques exemples.

Les solutions à ces problèmes sont complexes et il serait naïf de suggérer que l’art, et la littérature en particulier, mènera forcément à une résolution.

Mais les grands artistes ont la faculté exceptionnelle de pouvoir témoigner avec brio du monde tel qu’il est. Ce faisant, ils mettent en lumière les conséquences humaines de l’injustice, de l’intolérance, de la répression, de la privation économique et culturelle, de la dégradation de l’environnement ou encore du déni de la dignité individuelle. Cette année, les écrivains participant au Festival viennent des quatre coins de la planète, de quinze pays différents pour être tout à fait exact. Chacun à sa manière témoignera de la condition humaine dans le monde d’aujourd’hui.

Ce soir, A.S. Byatt, lauréate du Man Booker Prize pour son roman, Possession, sera en conversation avec Raphaëlle Rérolle du Monde. Selon The Paris Review, personne n’a aussi bien écrit qu’ A.S. Byatt sur Darwin et sur la passion amoureuse. Toujours d’après le magazine littéraire, « peu d’écrivains ont une curiosité intellectuelle d’une telle richesse ; aucun autre, peut-être, ne considère la vie de l’esprit comme un bonheur que l’on prend autant de plaisir à donner qu’à recevoir. » Elle nous parlera de son travail d’auteur de romans et de nouvelles, mais aussi son métierde de critique. Elle nous dira comment Dostoïevski, Camus, Kafka, Beckett, Thomas Mann et James Joyce ont influencé sa vision du roman et elle parlera de son profond respect pour le lecteur qui, selon elle, s’intéresse à « presque tout ». Le programme de ce soir sera présenté par Marc Porée, professeur de littérature anglaise à l’École normale supérieure.

Tonight A.S. Byatt, recipient of the Man Booker Prize for her novel Possession, joins us for a wide-ranging conversation about her work as a novelist, critic, and short story writer with Le Monde’s Raphaëlle Rérolle. The diverse topics of her writing are well known to fans; Byatt has commented on her utmost respect for the reader who she says is interested “in almost everything.” The Paris Review says no one has written both of Darwinian theory and the ancient, inexhaustible subject of sexual passion as well as A.S. Byatt, noting, “there are few writers so rich in intellectual curiosity; none, perhaps, who so definitely regards the life of the mind as a matter of pleasure taken and given in equal measure.” Byatt’s understanding of the novel has been influenced by writers such as Dostoyevsky, Camus, Kafka, Beckett, Thomas Mann, and James Joyce. This evening’s program will be introduced by Marc Porée, distinguished Professor of English Literature at the École normale supérieure.

The New York Times a défini l’écrivain Michel Faber comme « un maître de l’étrange ». Son dernier roman, Le livre des choses étranges et nouvelles, commence comme un récit de science-fiction, qu’il développe avec la patience et la concentration d’un maître de Tai-chi. En résultent des liens inattendus entre les choses, pleins d’ironie et d’émotions, ainsi qu’une profonde réflexion sur la souffrance, l’amour et les origines de la foi religieuse. Ce soir, Michel Faber et Sylvain Bourmeau parleront du chagrin et du deuil, surtout de l’amour face aux épreuves de la vie et notre responsabilité vis-à-vis de nos proches.

He joins us tonight for a fascinating conversation with journalist Sylvain Bourmeau about grief and loss, faith and love tested beyond endurance, and our responsibility to those closest to us.

C’est une soirée exceptionnelle que nous vous proposons en compagnie de Les Murray, l’un des plus grands poètes australiens de notre temps, en lice pour le prix Nobel de littérature. D’origine modeste, Murray a grandi dans la ferme de ses grands-parents à Bunyah, en Nouvelle-Galles du Sud. Les thèmes récurrents de ses livres sont l’histoire et les paysages d’Australie, les colons, la vie des indigènes, la famille et la campagne. De son processus d’écriture quasi hypnotique, il dit : « C’est une intégration de la notion de l’esprit comme corps, de l’esprit comme rêve et de l’esprit comme conscience rationnelle. » En 1996, il est tombé dans le coma pendant trois semaines à la suite d’une hépatite virale. À son réveil, la presse a déclaré qu’il était « conscient et loquace » : c’est ce qui a inspiré le titre de son recueil de poèmes, Conscious and Verbal, paru en 2001. Ce soir, il parle avec Daniel Tammet, son traducteur, auteur de Je suis né un jour bleu, Embrasser le ciel immense : Le cerveau des génies et L’Éternité dans une heure : la poésie des nombres.

Don’t miss this special evening of conversation and poetry with Les Murray, Australia’s leading poet and contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Reflecting on his childhood upbringing in poverty on his grandparents’ farm in Bunyah in New South Wales, Murray’s recurrent subjects are the history and landscape of Australia, white settlers, Indigenous life, family, and the rural landscape. He describes his almost trance-like writing process as “an integration of the body-mind and the dreaming-mind and the daylight-conscious-mind.” After a liver infection sent him into a three-week coma in 1996, he awoke to press reports stating that he was “conscious and verbal,” which became the title of his 2001 collection of poems, and inspires this evening’s conversation with his French translator, Daniel Tammet, and author of the internationally bestselling books, Born on a Blue Day, Embracing the Wide Sky, and Thinking in Numbers.

Le dernier livre de l’auteur à succès Gary Shteyngart, Professeur à la « School of the Arts » de l’Université Columbia, Mémoires d’un bon à rien, est drôle, provocateur et très original. Il a été classé parmi les meilleurs livres de l’année par plus de quarante-cinq journaux et revues, notamment The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, The New Yorker et The Atlantic.  L’auteur des best-sellers Super triste histoire d’amour et Traité de savoir-vivre à l’usage des jeunes russes nous propose cette fois-ci l’histoire d’un Américain immigré en Russie, dont le personnage principal est Gary Shteyngart en personne ! Cette lecture, suivie d’une conversation avec le responsable de la programmation de la bibliothèque, Grant Rosenberg, nous offre un voyage dans le temps et la mémoire, entre humour autocritique, perspicacité touchante et audace littéraire.

Salman Rushdie a dit d’Etgar Keret qu’il était « la voix de la nouvelle génération ». Ce soir, Etgar Keret lira plusieurs extraits de sa première œuvre non romanesque, Sept années de bonheur. Ce récit autobiographique couvre la période entre la naissance de son fils Lev, lors d’une attaque terroriste, et la mort de son père, sept ans plus tard. Après cette lecture, il s’entretiendra avec Déborah Lévy-Bertherat, maître de conférences en littérature comparée à l’ENS, et parlera de sa vie, de l’art d’écrire ses mémoires et du genre de la nouvelle, dans lequel il est passé maître.

Salman Rushdie heralds Etgar Keret as “the voice of the next generation.” Tonight, the author reads a selection of stories from his memoir, The Seven Good Years, which covers the period between the birth of his son Lev during a terrorist attack and the death of his father seven years later. The reading will be followed by a conversation with Déborah Lévy-Bertherat, Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at the ENS, about his life, the art of memoir, and the short story.

On compare souvent l’écrivain bosniaque Aleksandar Hemon à Vladimir Nabokov car il est l’une des voix littéraires les plus dynamiques et les plus importantes de notre époque. En 1992, il se trouvait aux États-Unis quand a commencé le siège de Sarajevo, sa ville natale. Dans ces circonstances exceptionnelles, il a été contraint de rester en Amérique, où il a commencé à écrire en anglais. Il a obtenu la bourse Guggenheim en 2003 et le Prix MacArthur en 2004. Dans Le projet Lazarus, un écrivain en voyage en Europe de l’Est part enquêter sur un meurtre commis il y a plus d’un siècle. Le récit orchestre ainsi un chassé-croisé entre des personnages contemporains et historiques, tous confrontés à l’injustice et à l’inégalité. Son dernier livre, Amour et obstacles, a été publié aux Editions Robert Laffont. La lecture d’Aleksandar Hemon sera suivie d’une conversation avec journaliste Kerenn Elkaïm sur ce roman à la fois original, amusant et provocateur.

Bosnian writer Aleksandar Hemon is often compared to Vladimir Nabokov as one of the most dynamic and essential literary voices of our time. In 1992, while he was traveling in the U.S., his hometown of Sarajevo came under siege, preventing him from returning. Beyond his extraordinary circumstances of becoming an American-based English-language writer, he is the recipient of both a Guggenheim grant in 2003 and the MacArthur Fellowship in 2004. In The Lazarus Project, a writer travels to Eastern Europe to research a murder that happened more than one hundred years ago, and we witness present-day and historical characters facing forms of social inequalities and injustices as their stories intertwine. His latest book published in France is, Love and Obstacles, (Éditions Robert Laffont). Tonight, Hemon joins journalist Kerenn Elkaïm for a reading and a conversation about his original, provocative, and entertaining work.

Cette fille de physicien, qui a grandi à Pékin, semblait destinée à faire une carrière scientifique. Mais elle confie avoir lu en cachette « un grand recueil de poèmes de la dynastie Tang » tout en « faisant semblant de faire des maths ». Des années plus tard, alors qu’elle prépare sa thèse en immunologie à l’université de l’Iowa, elle adopte une stratégie similaire et lit des nouvelles parues dans The New Yorker tout en travaillant au laboratoire. Il y a un peu plus de dix ans, elle a enfin cédé au chant des sirènes : elle a abandonné la médecine et s’est inscrite au célèbre programme d’écriture de l’université de l’Iowa. Depuis, elle a publié deux recueils de nouvelles salués par la critique, écrit deux romans et décroché le Prix MacArthur. Elle a également figuré sur plusieurs listes des « meilleurs jeunes auteurs américains ». Tout cela est d’autant plus remarquable lorsque l’on connaît son parcours. Aujourd’hui, Yiyun Li parlera de son dernier roman, Plus doux que la solitude, avec Sandrine Treiner, directrice de France Culture, et du chemin sinueux qui mène à l’écriture.

Growing up in Beijing as the daughter of a physicist, Yiyun Li seemed destined for a career in science. But she surreptitiously read poetry instead of doing math. Years later, studying for a Ph.D. in immunology at the University of Iowa, she adopted a similar strategy, reading short stories clipped from The New Yorker as she did lab work. A little over a decade ago, she finally heeded that siren call, abandoning medicine and enrolling in the famous Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Since then, she has published two critically acclaimed short-story collections, written a pair of novels, was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship and named in various lists of best young American writers, feats made all the more remarkable by her background. Today Yiyun Li is in conversation with the newly appointed director of France Culture, Sandrine Treiner, about her unusual path to the life of a writer and her newly released novel, Kinder Than Solitude.

Dans Les Portes de l’enfer (à paraître en 2016), la journaliste et écrivaine Samar Yazbek raconte comment la révolution syrienne, née d’un soulèvement populaire civil, s’est transformée en un mouvement armé, puis en un conflit qui implique aujourd’hui des milices djihadistes et l’État islamique. Yazbek, qui a fui la frontière syrienne en se faufilant par un trou dans un grillage, témoigne de l’horreur de la révolution et de la descente aux enfers de son pays.  Andrew Hussey, directeur du Centre de Post-Colonial Studies à l’Université de Londres, et Samar Yazbek nous proposent une discussion fascinante sur l’augmentation dramatique du nombre de djihadistes syriens ; ils nous expliqueront comment, selon eux, les djihadistes étrangers ont volé leur révolution aux Syriens.

In The Crossing: My Journey to the Shattered Heart of Syria, journalist and award-winning writer Samar Yazbek narrates the transformation of the Syrian revolution from a popular civil uprising, to an armed revolution, and, finally, to a chaotic conflict involving jihadist militia and ISIS.  Slipping across the Syrian border through a hole in a fence, she witnesses and lives the horror of the revolution and its descent into the abyss.  This afternoon, Yazbek joins Andrew Hussey, Director of the Centre for Post-Colonial Studies at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study, for a fascinating discussion about the means by which the number of the Syrian jihadists increased, and how the arrival of foreign jihadists robbed the Syrians of their revolution.

14:30-15:30 L’exil et le sentiment d’appartenance : Conversation entre Sayed Kashua, Etgar Keret et Kerenn ElkaïmBIBLIOTHÈQUE NATIONALE DE FRANCE – FRANÇOIS-MITTERRANDQUAI FRANÇOIS-MAURIAC, 75013 PARIS(GRATUIT ET OUVERT AU PUBLIC)

Le 4 juillet 2014, quelques semaines avant le début de la guerre de Gaza, dans l’un des éditoriaux qu’il écrit régulièrement en hébreu pour le quotidien Haaretz, Sayed Kashua annonce son intention de quitter Israël avec femme et enfants pour s’installer aux États-Unis. Ne supportant plus l’atmosphère de violence et de haine dans laquelle il vit, il adresse un salut tendre à ses amis juifs et leur fait part de son projet. En réponse à cet appel désespéré, Etgar Keret a écrit une lettre à son collègue et ami. De cet échange est née une formidable correspondance entre les deux écrivains, l’un juif et l’autre arabe, portant sur le sentiment d’appartenance, l’exil et la réconciliation. En octobre 2014, Le Monde a publié cet échange de lettres inédit, qui a suscité un vif intérêt de la part du public. Aujourd’hui, les deux auteurs poursuivront cette discussion et parleront du climat politique actuel, des conséquences du départ de Sayed pour les États-Unis, de l’intention de Keret de rester et de l’impact de leurs choix respectifs sur leur vie de famille et leur carrière d’écrivain.

On July 4th, 2014, just days before the Israel-Gaza conflict, in one of his regular columns written in Hebrew for the newspaper Haaretz, Sayed Kashua announced his intention to take his family from Israel to live in the United States. In a tender address to his Jewish friends, he explained his intention to leave, saying he could no longer stand the atmosphere, the inequality of opportunity, the violations of human rights, the violence, and the hatred. Responding to that desperate plea, Etgar Keret wrote his friend and colleague a letter. There ensued a truly remarkable correspondence between the two writers - one Jewish, the other Arab - about belonging, exile, and reconciliation. In October of 2014, Le Monde published this extraordinary exchange of letters to great public attention. Today both writers join us to continue that exchange in the context of the current political climate, discussing the consequences of Sayed’s move to the U.S., Keret’s intention to stay, and the differing impacts of their decisions on their families and their writing.

Publishers Weekly écrit que la romancière, poétesse et dramaturge mexicaine, Carmen Boullosa, était « l’une des artistes d’Amérique latine les plus impressionnantes de la nouvelle génération ». Elle a reçu le prestigieux prix Xavier Villaurrutia, un prix Guggenheim, le Literaturpreis de Francfort, ainsi que les prix Anna Seghers et Café Gijón. Elle nous propose aujourd’hui une conversation passionnante avec Margery Arent Safir, fondateur et directeur du Arts Arena, sur la capacité de la littérature à réexaminer le passé et à changer l’avenir.

Publishers Weekly calls Mexican novelist, poet and playwright Carmen Boullosa, “one of the most dazzling of Latin America’s new generation.” Winner of the prestigious Xavier Villaurrutia Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Literaturpreis of Frankfurt, the Anna Seghers and the Café Gijón prizes, she joins us today for a conversation with Margery Arent Safir, founder and director of The Arts Arena, about the power of literature to re-examine the social and cultural inequalities of the past in an effort to change the future.

Aleksandar Hemon et Yiyun Li ont tous les deux reçu le Prix MacArthur et sont devenus écrivains sur le tard. Leurs points communs ne s’arrêtent pas là : tous deux ont également décidé de ne pas écrire dans leur langue maternelle dès leurs premières œuvres littéraires importantes. Alors qu’elle étudiait la médecine en Chine, Yiyun Li n’a jamais rien écrit en chinois, à part son journal intime d’adolescente. En 1992, Aleksandar Hemon était de passage aux États-Unis quand a commencé le siège de sa ville natale, Sarajevo. Pris au piège, il s’est installé à Chicago. Déjà publié chez lui, il faudra toutefois attendre trois ans pour qu’il écrive son premier roman en anglais. Cette conversation passionnante entre deux auteurs expatriés, qui comptent parmi les plus brillants et les plus respectés de notre temps, sera animée par Holger A. Klein, professeur à l’Université Columbia.

As a medical student in China, Yiyun Li’s writing in Chinese was limited to her teenage journal. Aleksandar Hemon, originally from Sarejevo, wrote his first story in English while he was stranded in the U.S. when war broke out in the Balkans. Both are recipients of the MacArthur Fellowship and have written award-winning books in languages that are not their own. Today they are in conversation with Columbia Professor, Holger A. Klein.

English novelist Michel Faber, wrote his haunting new novel, The Book of Strange New Things, – which he says is his last work – at the bedside of his dying wife. Indian author Joydeep Roy-Bhattacharya’s novel, The Watch, is told from vastly different perspectives and takes us to the heart of the conflict in Afghanistan to examine the nature and futility of war. Javier Cercas’s new novel, Outlaws, is a meditation on youth, love, and betrayal set in the late 70s after the death of Franco and the rebirth of Spanish democracy. Today they are in conversation together with psychoanalyst and distinguished author and critic, Michel Schneider from Le Point.

The London Review of Books attributes Binyavanga Wainaina’s success as an African writer to the fact that, “he doesn’t try to write about Africa.” Instead, his memoir, One Day I Will Write About this Place, describes going to an African school, attending the weddings of his family and friends, watching African television shows, telling African jokes, and growing up middle-class in Kenya. It also explores the question of his sexuality – the “lost chapter” is a moving account of coming to terms with his sexuality as a young boy and then as a mature man. Tonight’s fascinating conversation takes place between Didier Pourquery, editor of the new on-line magazine The Conversation, France, and Binyavanga Wainaina, who Time magazine declared one of the world’s 100 most influential people.

Edna O’Brien a fait ses débuts littéraires avec la trilogie Les Filles de la campagne. This special evening with Edna O’Brien, whom Philip Roth describes as “the most gifted woman now writing in English,” takes place under the stars in the beautiful courtyard of the Centre culturel irlandais. Edna O’Brien made her literary debut with The Country Girls trilogy. The feelings of women living within a strict education code and their frustrated relationships with men is a recurring theme in O‘Brien‘s work, as is a questioning of the moral order of Catholic and nationalist Ireland. She has published some twenty works of fiction, essays, plays, and short stories. In 2012, she wrote Country Girl: A Memoir, which critics, booksellers, and readers alike recognized as the work of a grand dame of letters. Tonight she is in conversation with distinguished journalist from Le Monde, Josyane Savigneau.

David Foster Wallace est l’auteur de nombreux romans, nouvelles et essais. Son roman L’Infinie Comédie, publié en 1996, a été salué comme l’une des œuvres fondamentales de la littérature des années ‘90. Il se déroule dans un avenir proche et traite de la dépendance, du divertissement, du plaisir, du commerce, de la technologie et du tennis. Ce roman compte 388 notes qui viennent compléter près de 1000 pages de prose, ce qui, associé à un univers fictif très détaillé, lui a valu d’être considéré comme un roman encyclopédique. En 2005, Time l’a classé parmi les cents meilleurs romans en langue anglaise publiés depuis 1923. Inspired by the story, Javier Cercas brings us his most audacious literary creation yet. The impostor epitomizes the “authentic character” that appears in all of Cercas’s novels. The tale is a powerful reflection on the idea of the hero, on Spain’s recent history and its collective amnesia, on the business of “historical memory,” on lies, and on the role of literature and its inherent narcissism.

UR est une réponse moderne à l’un des textes les plus anciens de toute l’histoire de la littérature, la Lamentation sur la destruction d’Ur. Adoptant la forme d’une tragédie contemporaine axée sur le personnage de Ningal, la déesse d’Ur, la pièce reprend des éléments de la tablette sumérienne d’origine dans le chœur. L’action est centrée sur Ningal, fille des dieux, qui se rebelle contre sa position dans le panthéon et fait de sa ville la scène d’une révolution sociale et sexuelle qui s’oppose au statu quo religieux et militaire de Sumer. Sa transgression est sanctionnée trois fois par les dieux : la première sur les terres d’Ur (catastrophe naturelle), la deuxième sur son peuple (guerre) et la troisième sur le corps de Ningal. Ur  est une parabole sur la liberté et, dans le contexte des soulèvements populaires qui secouent le monde arabe, sur la répression et l’émergence d’organisations radicales comme l’État islamique. La pièce de Sulayman Al Bassam est une métaphore de la liberté.

In a Festival first, we are proud to present UR, a workshop of a play written by acclaimed playwright, Sulayman Al Bassam and commissioned by the Festival des Écrivains du Monde. UR is a contemporary response to one of the most ancient texts in the history of writing, The Lamentation for the Destruction of the City of Ur.  Taking the form of a contemporary tragedy focused on the figure of Ningal, the city of Ur’s titular Goddess, the play uses elements from the original Sumerian tablet as chorus material. The drama revolves around Ningal, daughter of the Gods, who rebels against her position in the divine pantheon and transforms her city, Ur, into the staging ground and beacon for a social and sexual revolution that pits itself against the religious and military status quo of Sumer. The cost of her transgression is exacted by the Gods three times: first, upon the lands of Ur (environmental catastrophe); second, upon the people of Ur (war); and, finally, upon the body of Ningal. Within the context of the popular uprisings across the Arab World, their subsequent quashing and the emergence of radical organizations such as Islamic State, UR acts as a metaphor for liberty.
