NATURAL VENTILATION

Naturalventilation can be effective whilst offeringreduced capital, space and running costscompared to conventional airconditioning.

Colt's natural ventilation systemsconcentrate on automatically opening andclosing windows, ventilators and rooflightsin a controlled manner.The systems canrange from a simple open / close switchto a fully integrated energy managementsystem, which could include carbondioxide measuring, internal and externaltemperature measuring, external weathersensors as well as interfaces with buildingmanagement systems.

Coltlite is a natural glazed ventilator forinstallation into the facade which can provideboth day to day and smoke ventilation. Itsform and function make it particularly suitedto educational buildings where good U valuesand low air leakage are required.

Smoke prevents people from escaping and makes it difficult for thefire brigade to see where the source of the fire is. Colt’s smokecontrol systems ensure that if there is a fire, smoke is contained

and removed, allowing safe evacuation and fire-fighting.

Itis the normal means of compliance withBuilding Regulations for fire safety designin new school buildings and sets out theDCSF policy on fires within schools.

With Smoke Control Ventilation, thedetailed design guidance mainly relies oncontainment by walls and doors toprevent smoke from entering escaperoutes.Automatic smoke control systems

(triggered by an automatic detectionsystem) can achieve the same ends, byextracting smoke from the building.Thisprovides benefits for means of escape andalso facilitates access by the Fire andRescue Service. It is important to notethat most natural ventilation solutions canbe utilised for dual purpose smokecontrol with little design change.

Designing natural ventilation solutions is of paramount importancewhen it comes to education building design. But what energyefficient option could you consider for heating (or even boostcooling for those occasional hot summer days)?

The award winning Caloris WRF (water and refrigerant flow)water source heat pump system can be installed in the classroomswith de-centralised local control to provide both heating duringthe winter and boost cooling in the summer where the heat loadsare expected to become too high for natural ventilation.WRF offercustomers a more efficient and effective option than traditionalVRF and fan coil systems that provide both performance andenvironmental benefits.

The Colt WRF system is based on reverse cycle water source heatpump technology and uses water rather than refrigerant as itsmain energy transfer medium. Local units are linked together bythis neutral temperature water loop to form a complete system.Refrigerant charge is minimal and local to the Caloris unit, so it isnot affected by the forthcoming F Gas regulations.

HEATING & COOLING

* Colt International Ltd has won the prestigious H&V Environmental Initiative of the Year Award 2009 for its development of the WRF Caloris system combinedwith ground source, for Hatchcroft University in Middlesex

Caloris Indoor Units have a EER of between 3.7 and 6.4 and anOutdoor Unit has a EER of between 3 to 5 in winter and 4 to 5 insummer and can make use of the building mass, PCM (phasechange material) or even a water reservoir (e.g. via a GSHPsystem) as a heat sink for both heating and cooling.

Caloris WRF can be seen operating at Sheffield University (AlfredDenny Building), Hatchcroft University, Farnborough 6th FormCollege and many other buildings throughout the UK and Europe.

The building, which has a capacity of 1,100staff and students, has been designed tobe both adaptable and sustainable,accommodating laboratories forBiomedical teaching and research,classrooms and associated facilities forPsychology, Computing and SportsSciences.

Built in place of six, now demolished,buildings, the new development hasachieved a 12% reduction in CO2emissions. Colt Caloris linked to GSHPwas chosen as an energy efficient solution to assist in this reduction, as well asgenerally contributing to the University'sambition of achieving an "Excellent"BREEAM rating.

Throughout the building, 59 Calorisindoor units have been installedconnected to a vertical, closed loopborehole, GSHP system.Taking up an areaof approximately 1,400 m2, 55 boreholeshave been drilled to an approximate depthof 60m, accommodating the GSHP's32mm coil arrangement.The resultantHVAC solution can provide a capacity ofup to 235 kW gross peak heating loadand 190 kW net peak cooling load.

Colt was awarded this contract due to itsability to help integrate the completepackage of works, from the design andinstallation of the GSHP system, toproviding the link between the groundand the indoor Caloris WRF units.
