From the

Director’s CLIpboard Who would have thought it would be six months between productions at CP? Even in the early days of the organization, 45 years ago, they didn’t go this long without bringing the community together. Things still are not back to normal and won’t be for some time to come. This doesn’t make the mission of CP any less important or necessary. What has changed are the types of opportunities we can safely provide. One bright side is that it offers us the chance to slightly break out of the normal mold and produce a show like The Outrageous Adventures of Sheldon & Mrs. Levine. An organization like CP is all about planning. Shows and projects are usually selected months, if not over a year, in advance. With this show we went from selecting the script to opening night in just over a month. We could feel the itch to get back on stage and share experiences with a “live studio audience.” As state health measures began to loosen and we learned more about protective measures we could take for our actors/volunteers and patrons we wanted to get out from behind our webcams and in front of live people again. Finding this show was a happy discovery. We searched through over 20 scripts in less than two weeks trying to find something to produce in early August. There were two main criteria to consider. First, it needed to be a small cast. We still are not comfortable bringing large groups of actors to nightly rehearsals in our cramped greenroom space. The second, and equally important, was it needed to be a comedy. The need for all of us to laugh right now goes without saying. This show checked all the boxes. As an added bonus it is written as an exchange of letters between the two characters. The show is specifically written to not be fully memorized. That was great for a production which ended up having just two full weeks of rehearsal before going into dress rehearsals. This is also the type of show we likely wouldn’t ever include as a traditional regular season production. The characters in the show also aren’t exactly the best people, and hopefully none of you have this kind of relationship with your mothers. Making the show available online also creates some technical challenges and requires us to make sure we follow all copyright laws precisely. The show is kind of a hybrid between being a readers theatre production (which we’ve done as special events before) and a regular show. That hybrid nature doesn’t make it any less entertaining, though. It is kind of exciting to go from start to finish on a show in such a short amount of time. There’s no time for ideas to get stale, overthink the design process, or for the jokes to no longer be funny during rehearsal. There’s of course some downsides, like having to get all the production work done in less than half the time – I’ve slept much less than usual the last few weeks. Being able to gather again, even in a somewhat limited capacity, again and work with our talented team of actors and volunteers makes it all worth it. This unplanned break has really allowed us to rediscover the joy of performance and working on the creative projects and opportunities we offer here at CP. Let’s just hope it’s not another six months before we are back on stage in-person again!Enjoy the show!Jamie UlmerManaging Artistic Director

The CASTGrant Bennett (Sheldon Levine) marks this production as his first at CP! Elsewhere, he has performed in The Jungle Book, The Bad Seed, and KIND NESS at Doane University. Grant works as a server at 4one8 Bar and Grill. “I minored in Theatre, I got a job with a flexible enough schedule, and I figured, ‘What the hell,’ so I finally got off of my butt and auditioned. I’d forgotten how much I love the art and the process.”Rosalie Duffy (Mrs. Doris Levine) returns to the CP stage, having previously appeared in A Murder is Announced and Harvey. On other stages, she has most recently performed in Girls’ Weekend and The Fox on the Fairway at Lincoln Community Playhouse and The Miracle Worker at the Lofte Community Theater. “Thank you all for coming out to support Beatrice Community Players. We hope you enjoy the show!”Brandon Clark (Stage Manager) is a familiar face at CP, having appeared in many productions such as Shipwrecked! An Entertainment, Ripcord, Lucky Stiff, and James and the Giant Peach. When he is not volunteering at the theatre, Brandon works as an IT specialist at the Homestead National Monument of America.
