Geoffrey Key: ‘Centaur With Clouds’, oil, 24`̀ x 18`̀

ED PERRY GALLERY OWNER

FOREWARD

In my opinion, North West artists produce an uncontended

range of work, and I’m incredibly excited to be providing a

new space, Colourfield, to showcase pieces from both our

established and emerging artists.

I’ve been an avid collector of North West artists’ work for

over 25 years, and my passion is to provide more than a

gallery, but an all-inclusive experience that suits all ages, and

all tastes. I’m exhibiting work from established artists such as

Geoffrey Key, Alan Knight, Chris Cyprus and Bob Richardson

to newly discovered talent such as David Coulter, Lucy Collins

and David Bez.

Bob Richards: title. Oil on canvas 30`̀ x 30`̀

Sited on the main road running through Poynton,

Colourfield provides the perfect exhibition space for the

hundreds of people who pass it every day.

As Geoffrey Key, a painter who lives and works from his

home in the North West, puts it: “Colourfield is launching

at a pivotal time, as increasingly Cheshire is becoming

nationally recognised as a target for UK art lovers, who are

showing more and more interest in North West art.”

I want as many people as possible to benefit from Colourfield,

not only the artists but businesses and residents too. I’m

planning ‘meet the artists’ sessions for audiences ranging from

school groups, to ladies and gents nights, and the gallery will

provide the perfect venue for business networking events, both

local and as a Northern base for companies across the UK.

I have a wide range of paintings in stock, that can be viewed

either within the gallery space or online on Colourfield’s

website; and if you’re after a painting by a particular artist, I’m

here to provide a sourcing service for you.

Art is an investment opportunity which is why I’m keen to

detect our region’s emerging talent, and celebrate it within

Colourfield.

I’m inviting anyone with a passion, or even just a mild curiosity

in art, to come along to our gallery where you’ll be welcomed

for a casual look around or help with purchasing a piece.

Sign up for our blog, to keep updated about our latest

exhibitions and events, and enjoy the ground-breaking art that

is emerging from the North West, housed in Colourfield.

GEOFFREY KEY

Geoffrey Key is a painter who lives and works in the

North West of England. He has an international

following; his work is to be found in galleries and

public and private collections worldwide.

Geoffrey Key is widely regarded as one of the most

important artists working in Britain today. His work

has been and is exhibited throughout the UK, Europe

and the far East, as well as in the USA and Australia.

He was born in Manchester in 1941;

his early education was at the High School of Art in

the City from where he entered Manchester Regional

College of Art in 1958. There he gained the National

Diploma of Design, Diploma of Associateship of

Manchester, Postgraduate in Sculpture, the Guthrie

Bond Travelling Scholarship and the Heywood Medal

in Fine Art.

On completion of his formal education, and having

known his vocation since childhood, Key embarked

upon his lifetime career as a painter and sculptor. His

work had already begun to be acquired by private,

corporate and public collectors and galleries; he has

continued throughout successfully to build upon

these early beginnings with his honest and

straightforward approach.

He set out imbued with a number of basic principles,

including being true to himself, avoiding artistic

influence and fashion; and above all maintaining

personal and artistic honesty and integrity.

These principles have endured and coupled with the

vibrancy and love of life so evident in his work, have

led to him developing a strong and loyal following

amongst so many who enjoy, appreciate and collect

fine art.

CHRISTOPHER CYPRUS

Born April 1971, Gorton, Manchester. In 1978 after

briefly living in Stockport I moved to Mossley,

Ashton-u-Lyne, a small town built around the old

cotton mills and the River Tame. I attended Mossley

Hollins High School, leaving in 1987 with only 4

G.C.S.E’s and an O’level at grade A+ in Art.

I then worked for the family business as a Carpet Fitter

until 1991, going on to become self employed as a

builder and part time musician, working the Northern

Clubs and occasionally touring Germany.

Following a work related injury in August 1998; I took

up painting as a hobby and in 1999 hired a stand at the

Manchester Art Show at G.Mex where I sold all my

exhibited paintings. This gave me the confidence to

pursue my talents as a professional Painter. In 2001 I was

diagnosed with Testicular Cancer which reoccurred in 2003.

After having Radio therapy I finally got the all clear in 2004.

The illness helped me to prioritise the importance things

in life, and highlighted the things that are usually taken for

granted. This strengthened my artistic vision and fuelled the

passion to succeed as an artist.

Most of my paintings are worked on canvas using Acrylics.

I enjoy working with this medium because it allows me to

work at a speed that suits my style of painting. I also work

in Oils and Watercolours, but Oil painting can sometimes

be too labourious as the excitement of the early stages

of creation can be lost (a bit like watching paint dry) but

like the allotment I am also learning about ‘Patience’.

Art was always my first love at school. After leaving

school in1965 I applied to enter Bolton Art College,

was accepted on the Foundation course but, due to

parental pressure, “you’ll never make a living as an

artist,” abandoned all aesthetic pursuits and started

work in Local Government.

Of course if art is in your blood it will always surface

throughout your life. The creative urge can’t be

suppressed, it must be expressed. With me music

became my means of expression (guitar, banjo, and

mandolin) to the preference of visual art and for

twelve years I was on the road in a comedy jug band.

After this ran its course I drifted back to painting and

drawing again and in 1989 did a foundation course in

art and design at Salford University. This was the kick

start that I needed and since then my enthusiasm and

commitment towards producing something important

and of quality has steadily grown. Now art is my

vocation not my interest!

After trying various techniques and mediums down

the years I eventually discovered that knife painting in

oil best suited my temperament. I want a result

quickly, in one session, and knife painting enables a

speedy process.

I take inspiration from the visual world. When outside

I can see paintings everywhere. Back in my studio

process begins of transforming, distilling what I have

seen into an original, personal vision in oil paint.

In the end it’s a question of feeling and response.

DAVID BEZ

Born and raised in Manchester, David was

encouraged to paint from an early age by his

Mother and still has work he painted from the

age of four, which shows a remarkable ability

to use line and colour. After leaving school

he completed a course in Graphic Design at

Stockport College of Art and is a

B.A Graduate of Manchester Polytechnic.

David is now a full time working artist, illustrator

and glass designer who finds working and

experimenting in these contrasting areas both

challenging and exciting.

He says, “I find operating in these

different spheres enables me to

reappraise my work and to mix

and match from all. I find this

approach keeps my work fresh

and dynamic.”

David’s work draws inspiration

from the urban, industrial and

pastoral landscapes in and

around his home. David utilizes a

Faux Vitrial process, hand

embellishing with silicates and resins. This process

adds a depth and richness to the paintings, giving a

unique and exclusive finish to his work.
