    7 WARRANTY

Each SmartLF Scanner starts its warranty period when first shipped from Colortrac to thepurchasing Distributor. Non-consumable parts that fail within the warranty period will bereplaced free of charge.

Distributors are required to identify faulty parts. To help identify faults quickly it isrecommended that Distributors hold spare parts. Parts that are replaced under warrantymust be returned to Colortrac using the address at the front of this manual.

When a Distributor requests a warranty replacement, Colortrac Technical Support willissue them an RMA reference number. The warranty replacement is dispatched onceColortrac receives the defective part. In exceptional cases, Colortrac may agree to senda warranty replacement before the defective part has been received.

    7.1 WARRANTY PERIOD

When applicable, a Distributor may request up to a maximum 3-mouth deferment of thestart of a scanner's warranty period from the date it is delivered to the carrier at Colortrac,to coincide with its installation date. The deferment can be obtained by logging on to theColortrac Help Desk and selecting Notification of Installation Date, see Chapter 14.1 Onhow to extend warranty.

    8 CCD TECHNOLOGY

CCD wide format scanners contain one or more CCDs. Each CCD senses light that is incident onits silicon surface. This surface is divided into square cells, each several microns across (e.g.5.25 um). In a colour wide format scanner, each CCD has three closely-spaced parallel lines ofcells, each line being overlaid by a different colour filter (red, green, blue). Some colour CCDlarge format scanners including Colortrac SmartLF CCD scanners have four lines of cells (quadri-linear CCDs). In this case the fourth line has no filter and is used for monochrome scanning. Thisis called panchromatic monochrome.

Now consider the geometric requirements for a CCD wide format scanner. To produce a scannerwith 600 dpi optical resolution, the scanner manufacturer needs to design an optical systemwhich focuses light from a 1/600" square pixel at the document (0.04233 mm) onto a 5.25 um(0.00525 mm) square cell at the CCD silicon surface - a reduction of approximately 8:1. This isdone using photographic enlarger lenses and, usually, mirrors to fold the optical path (which canbe up to a meter / several feet long) into a small space.

This long optical pathway with its sensitive components means that quality CCD large formatscanners cost more to manufacture than quality CIS large format scanners, tend to be heavierand less compact (they need to be built with more rigidity) and potentially require morecalibration.

The use of lenses and mirrors also introduces some geometric distortion and limits on focus, thereby affecting geometric accuracy and resolving power - CCD wide format scanners produceless sharp scans than CIS scanners. The parts of a scan most likely to suffer geometric distortionare those at the edge of a CCD's range. Colortrac use multiple CCDs across the scan width oftheir CCD large format scanners. This avoids the need to work right to the edge of the lens, thusminimizing distortion. Colortrac also minimize distortion and focus effects by their use of DCUs.

The manufacturer of a CCD wide format scanner must also design an illumination system, generally using one or two fluorescent tubes, but we use LED lighting. This white light iscombined with the colour filters within the CCD to determine the colours produced by thescanner. Although the colour filters within the CCD are controlled by the CCD manufacturer, thescanner manufacturer is able to control the illumination system and is able to apply proprietaryprocessing to the CCD output to optimize the scanner's colour performance.

This allows CCD wide format scanners to capture a wider gamut and dynamic range than CISscanners. This makes CCD scanners more suitable for photographic material or documentswhere colour integrity and shadow detail is important.

    9 SCANNER ACCESSORIES

    9.1 USB CABLE TYPE A AND B

    Length: 2 meter max.Speed: 480Mb/s

This high quality USB cable complies fully with the USB2.0 specification.

The USB transfers signal and power over a four-wirecable. Signalling occurs through two wires on each point-to-point segment. There are three data rates: The USB high-speed signalling bit rate is 480 Mb/s.

The USB full-speed signalling bit rate is 12 Mb/s.

A limited capability low-speed signalling mode is also

    defined at 1.5 Mb/s.

USB 2.0 host controllers and hubs provide capabilities so that full-speed and low-speed data canbe transmitted at high-speed between the host controller and the hub, but transmitted betweenthe hub and the device at full-speed or low-speed. This capability minimises the impact that full-speed and low-speed devices have upon the bandwidth available for high-speed devices. The low-speed mode is defined to support a limited number of low-bandwidth devices, such asmice, because more general use would degrade bus utilisation. The clock is transmitted, encodedalong with the differential data. The clock encoding scheme is NRZI with bit stuffing to ensureadequate transitions. A SYNC field precedes each packet to allow the receiver(s) to synchronisetheir bit recovery clocks.

The cable also carries VBUS and GND wires on each segment to deliver power to devices. VBUSis nominally +5 V at the source. The USB allows cable segments of variable lengths, up toseveral meters, by choosing the appropriate conductor gauge to match the specified IR drop andother attributes such as device power budget and cable flexibility. In order to provide guaranteedinput voltage levels and proper termination impedance, biased terminations are used at each endof the cable. The terminations also permits the detection of attach and detach at each port anddifferentiate between high/full-speed and low-speed devices.

All devices have an upstream connection. Upstream and downstream connectors are notmechanically interchangeable, thus eliminating illegal loopback connections at hubs. The cablehas four conductors: a twisted signal pair of standard gauge and a power pair in a range ofpermitted gauges. The connector is four-position, with shielded housing, specified robustness, and ease of attach-detach characteristics.

    NOTE:

Colortrac provides a 2m USB 2.0 cable as part of the accessories package. 2m is the MAXIMUMlength we recommend. Use of cables longer than the recommended 2m is at the customersdiscretion. Colortrac can not be held accountable for any failures during operation when cablesgreater than this length are used.

    15.2 NETWORK COMPONENTS

DHCP Server The DHCP Server manages the IP addresses of LAN components.Normally the DHCP Server is the LAN boundary router but can be adedicated server. The Peto scanner does not support plug and play. Forerror free operation, to avoid IP conflicts, configure the DHCP Server toassociate the Peto's allocated IP with its MAC address.

    IPFilters/Firewalls

Some firewalls and IP filters can restrict connectivity between the PC andthe Peto scanner. Firewalls, whether client or network based, and IPfilters, must be configured to permit a TCP protocol connection betweenthe PC and ports 17236 (command) and 17237 (data) on the scanner. Ifdifferent port numbers are used, firewalls should be programmed toaccommodate these.

Network devices Routers are network boundary devices. It should not be necessary toconnect a PC to a Peto through a router. It will be necessary to connectthese through network hubs and switches. A hub or a switch connected tothe scanner must be capable of Gbit data rates. Connectivity cannot beestablished using 100Mbit, Fast Ethernet devices. For the best results, the connectivity between the PC and the Peto should be over Gbitthroughout.

    Connectingcables

Cables connecting the Peto scanner to network devices must be to thestandard Cat5e or Cat6.

    15.3 NETWORK CONFIGURATION

Best practice When the Peto downloads a scan to a PC, it transfers a significant amountof data. This activity can significantly increase the network load. Bestpractice is to connect the Peto scanner to a PC through a switch spur.Should a hub be used, the main network would still be loadedunnecessarily.

    The effects ofnetwork loading

It can take several minutes to download data from a scanner to a PC viathe LAN. This time can increase significantly if the network load is alreadyhigh, particularly during network antivirus operations or at the beginningand end of the working day. By connecting the Scanner to the PC using aswitch spur these effects can be minimised.
