Colorss Foundation is an Indian NGO that works towards enhancing the well-being of underprivileged children through the use of art and technology. For many children in India, access to quality education is simply not a reality. The lack of resources and training leads to a vicious cycle of poverty, which continues through generations and is almost inescapable. Colorss Foundation takes an innovative approach to this issue and provides the children in need with invaluable skills, and more importantly, the confidence to lead successful lives on their own terms.

To form a family of like-minded people whose motive would be to empower socially deprived children with qualities like self-confidence, responsibility and self-esteem, at the same time, ensuring that these children complete their school education.

Education is the key to development of not only individuals, but also for the development of the wider society. Unfortunately most children are forced by their parents to drop out of school, due the financial conditions for their families and end up as child laborers. Without a proper education, it is difficult for these children to reach their full potential.

The Colors of Life project strives to reduce the number of school dropouts, so that children can reap the long-term rewards of gaining a proper education. The program teaches teenagers to:

• Write and draw while being inspired by a topic chosen by a psychologist.

• Use computers effectively by providing hands-on-training.

• Translate their writing from Marathi/Gujarati to English.

• The outcome from these sessions is published in an electronic magazine (e-zine).

Underprivileged children face stress in many aspects of their lives, through family, academics, health etc. The situation gets even worse for young girls due to many reasons like the patriarchal nature of the society and the resulting gender discrimination. Girls tend to be seen as inferior, which could lead to a sense of worthlessness and low self esteem. The very thought that these girls deserve much better, has been the driving cause of Project Enhance. Project Enhance works to help young girls overcome these issues through sessions of martial arts and creative arts.

These sessions help the girls to cope with stress, become productive and actively contribute to the society.

Program benefits:

• The physical activity and meditation involved in karate training, allows children to control their aggression and stimulate their minds and bodies, as well as increasing stamina and physical fitness.

• The creative aspect of the project aids the children with their cognitive and motor skills, while also enhancing focus and discipline.

• Children are also provided with talks on topics including body language, careers, family dynamics and communication skills.

The program trains participants to become disciplined, self-confident, and most importantly, happy individuals who enjoys their studies.

Project Urja is aimed at assisting women break free from the vicious cycle of poverty. The innovative project aims to develop vocational skills in women, to give them the power to uplift themselves, as well as their families, so that they have a chance of a brighter future.

Disadvantaged women have no access to training and resources, which means they have a very limited education, and as a result, live in poverty. Project Urja gives these women the chance to become self-sufficient and escape from the vicious cycle. By improving their existing skills and teaching them new skills, we provide these disadvantaged women with the ability to become productive members of society, while also strengthening them financially and making them socially independent.

Aircel a+ Center; a CSR initiative of Aircel

In collaboration with Aircel, the Aircel CSR initiative was formed to help bridge the digital divide in India. Based in Pune, the project is currently helping to empower 480 underprivileged children and adolescents of India with computer literacy and vocational training (practical skills that will drastically enhance their employment prospects). This year we have reached 450 students. Out of the 60 students who attended vocational training, close to 20% have successfully been given job placements.

Risachi is the research wing of Colorss Foundation, which was formed in early July 2012. Despite its recent inception, Risachi has already successfully completed one major survey study involving 62 subjects and has three other major projects at different phases. The outcome of the research will involve designing novel strategies to improve the health of the underprivileged popu-lation. The Risachi research wing is proud to produce the 1st International Paper Publication on ‘Musculoskeletal Health In Urban Underprivileged School Children In Western India’, which was published in the International Journal of Management and Behavioural Sciences(IJMBS), E Journal Vol. 3 on 11th March 2013.

To develop the underprivileged children into value-driven individuals and to provide them a way forward, by the virtue of which they could give something back to the society.
