the responsibility rested upon his shoulders which burden he manfully accept-ed At the age of 18 yeses he enlistedin the Twentyninth Regiment Connecticut Volunteers and was attached-to the Ninth Corps He was musteredin the United States service in March1S63 and first faced the enemy on Aug24th 1863 On Aug 24h 1863 he wasattached to the 10th Corps to hold important positions
He was wounded at Bell house Vaon October twentyieventh 1S64 Hefirst served as corporal of his companyafter which he was promoted to
April 80th 1864 and was againpromoted as 1st Sergeant July 6h 1864As a soldier Mr Tatten was highlyhonored by all his superior officers andcomrades of his company He wasmustered out October twentyfourth1865 and was discharged at Hartford onNovember twentyfifth He was
as adjutant of the 5uh Battalion of the State of Conn Dec twentieth 1867 his commiFsion being signedby David Torrence Seey of State andCharles B B Andrews General Heheld the first position from 1879 until1882 he was again commissioned as adjutant of the same battalion in 1882andheld the position until the battalionwent out of existence in the Winter of
1890Afterthe war Mr Tatten resumed
his trade as painter He set up busi-ness for himself in 1895 Mr Tattenarrived in Ansonia Conn just elevenyears last May and immediately beganworking for Mr Crook the leadingpainter at that time Mr Tatfcen wasselected by Mr Crook as his mcst trus-ty workman and was placed as foreman-of Mr Cooks gang As a painter MrTatten stands among the first and hasgained a noticeable reputation Pre-vious to coming to Ansonia he workedin the Camden paint factory in Spring-field Mass He is also a first class carpenter and plumber Mr Tatten is alsoa member of the G A B and has helddifferent offices in the organization numerous times He has also been onthe regular police force since 1894 andis the only colored police that has everbeen on the regular force in AnsonlaHe Is also President of the State Sum-mer League which was organized Aug24 The main of the Leagueis for rights and justice to the Negroand for their rights we are positivelysura Mr Tatten will sue for his wholesoul is for the advancement of the Negro race
He is respected by all classes of people bobh white and colored and is themost influential colored man in onr city
and has attained the position which henow occupies We hope to see more ofour young men insfead of spendingtheir evenings in idly bolstering aroundwake tip and try to be somebody andlet our object be onward and upwardand instead of being disgraces to ourrace let us be au honor
