Reflection by Rick Mraz

I first met Scott in a Home Depot parking lot in Colorado Springs. I was driving home from work in my 240Z and needed to pick up a few items. I don’t think I had turn the car off and he approached me. We talked Z cars for some time. I mentioned ZCCC but didn’t have any of our “business cards” at the time. A couple of months later he joined the club. We know the rest of the story. We may never understand why we cross paths with people as we go through life. Personally, I believe in some divine intervention. Never know why, but our lives are better because of the relationships and interactions. May Scott rest in peace.

President’s Corner

April 2018 Ira Sanders

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz? My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends. Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends, So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?

Winter may be slowly fading into the distance in our rearview mirrors but don’t be fooled that winter is over. The second snowiest month is here although it may or may not be a bust in the snow making category just like the snowiest month of the year has turned out to be a bust. I predict that April will be above average in temperature and below average in precipitation. Global warming??: Maybe. More days for driving our cars; definitely. With more good days to drive our Z’s, do we need to be asking the question: Will there always be a Z car? According to some auto analysts, the Z is not going to survive the fact that it is riding on one of the oldest sports car platforms on the market. Other opinions noted in this Odometer to the con-trary, just think “What if”………..

But what happens if Nissan and Mercedes get together to offer a NEW Z with up to 400 hp on a platform jointly developed by the two auto makers? It’s not as if it would be the first time these two automotive giants got together to produce a vehicle. The Infiniti QX-30, which bears more than a passing resemblance to a Mercedes GLA, has the Mercedes 2.0L turbo in it and after driving one that belongs to ZCCC member Rob Marlowe, I’m convinced it would work. The same motor could be an entry level powerplant in a new Z with the aforementioned 400 hp coming from a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 motor that is in the Infiniti Q-50. Ah, a twin-turbo motor back in a Z. That would be nice. What would be even nicer, would be a motor larger than a 3.0L, since I think if the 3.0 was used, we’d have another generation of 300Z and that would be just damn confusing and a mere 100 hp gain over 30 years would be just plain disappointing. On the front page of this Odometer, there are details about the arrangements for Scott Guthrie’s memorial service on April 7. There are plans to meet south of Denver to caravan to the north side of Colorado Springs. The club has ordered a flower arrangement and it would be nice if we could get a substantial number of club members to caravan along I-25 and attend the memorial for one of our very active members.

New Member Dan Hansen by Andy Mortenson

It’s been a long time since we’ve had any out of state members. I think the last one was from Nebraska. Well, we have a new member who is from way out of state. Dan Wils Hansen is from Charlottenlund, Denmark, which is a suburb of Copenhagen. He recently purchased a 1971 240Z that used to belong to former ZCCC member Jim Wilson who lives in Lakewood. How this Z Car ended up in Denmark is an interesting story, but first a little about the current owner. Dan owns a house painting and interior decorating business and his wife, Helle, is a pediatric dental assistant. They have a 19 year old son named Alexander. Dan says he’s been a car guy since childhood, but about ten years ago when he bought his first classic car, a 1965 Mustang Coupe, white with red interior, then “my soul was sold to the devil..:-)” Besides the Datsun, he now owns three classics that include a 1966 Porsche 912 and a MGA Lemans Speedster, both of which he restored from the frame up. He’s also in the process of doing a frame-off restoration on his Porsche 914/6. Now, here’s the story of his 240Z. One day, Dan and Helle were taking a drive in their 912 when they were passed by a red 240Z with Swedish plates and his wife wanted to know what kind of car it was. So he decided that he would find his own 240Z. He started searching the internet, but it wasn’t until he went to a big classic car show in Essen, Germany, that he found the one he wanted. It was being sold by a dealer in Holland. When he purchased the car, it came with all the service records from the previous owner. Jim Wilson’s name was on some of the documents and there was a ZCCC sticker on the back window of the car. Dan was curious to learn some of the history of his car so he found our website and joined the club. (As an aside, Jim Wilson dropped out of the club a couple of years ago. However, I was able to contact him and he told me that he had sold his car and was able get a “premium” by taking it to Europe.)

NISSAN WILL NEITHER CANCEL NOR REDESIGN THE 370Z ANYTIME SOON Collin Woodard Words January 29, 2018

Instead, it will soldier on essentially unchanged It’s been a long time since Nissan introduced the 370Z. We first tested the 350Z’s long-awaited successor back in November of 2008, where the 2009 370Z impressed us with its quick acceleration, strong brakes, excellent grip, and updated interior. With a base price of $30,625, we said it “epitomizes a sports-car steal.” Nine years later, without any major updates, we were a little less impressed. But despite being long overdue for a redesign, it sounds like Nissan plans to keep selling the current 370Z indefinitely. Speaking to Automotive News, Philippe Klein, Nissan’s head of planning, said rumors that the Japanese automaker planned to cancel its entry-level sports car were false. But when asked about the next-generation Z, he didn’t have more encouraging news to share. “We’re working on it and it’s very present, but I have no indication to give you,” said Klein. According to Klein, making the business case to keep selling any sports coupe, much less develop a new one, has gotten increasingly difficult over the past several years. “The Z is a difficult market. It is rather shrinking worldwide. But we still believe there is a place for the Z and we want to keep it alive, and that’s what we’re working on,” he said. But that doesn’t mean we won’t ever see a new Z. It may simply require a lot of patience. “For the long term, there are other considerations,” said Klein. “If we do a complete new vehicle, what should it be to keep the passion alive? And we’re working very seriously on this—how we can keep the Z alive and refreshing, and what would be the next genera-tion?” “The passion is there,” he promised. “The question is, how can we refresh it, and what will be the breakthrough for the long term?” 2018 Nissan 370Z Heritage Edition pictured
