Colorado Farm Experiences
MESA WINDS FARM &
WINERY, HOTCHKISS
Wake up to the sight of dewy
peaches, apples, grapes and
cherries glistening in the sun. If
you’re up for it, pitch in around
the farm by prepping peaches
for pressing into wine or helping
with the grape harvest. You’ll
definitely want to make friends
with the resident flock of
babydoll sheep, who are as cute
as they sound, while they graze
among the orchards and “keep
the alleyways mowed.” Sit on
the tasting patio to sample the
fruit, literally, of Mesa Winds'
peach, rosé, pinot gris and pinot
meunier wines.
BLACKBELLY’S SUM-
MER DINNER SERIES,
VARIOUS LOCATIONS
Local foodie hero and “Top
Chef” alum Hosea Rosenberg
celebrates what’s in season
throughout the summer by
teaming up with farms around
the state for fancy farm dinners.
Each event’s menu is custom
crafted from what’s growing on
Blackbelly Catering’s own farm
(they raise pigs and lambs) as
well as the fruits and veggies of
the host farm. The table is set
amid the fields and accompanied
by Colorado summer’s cool
breezes.
FRESH & WYLD
FARMHOUSE INN &
GARDENS, PAONIA
A restored 1908 farmhouse with
mountain views is the setting
for the relaxing farm-to-table-
themed stay of your dreams.
Start with chef-prepared break-
fasts made with products grown
within a short radius of your
dining table. Then choose your
own adventure with cooking
classes that start in the garden
and farmstead classes in the
arts of cheese- and sausage-
making or quilting and weaving.
GUNNISON RIVER
FARMS, AUSTIN
Nestled along the Gunnison
River, this idyllic farm in the
tiny southwest town of Austin
has been growing some of the
state's best peaches for more
than 100 years. Guests are
welcomed for overnight stays in
the farm's historic cabins. When
the dinner bell rings, they gather
around the lodge's farm table for
a meal that might include lamb
or pork raised on the property
as well as veggies from the
garden. Spend afternoons on
the river with the farm’s expert
trout-fishing guides.
MEADOW LARK FARM
DINNERS, VARIOUS
LOCATIONS
Partnering with farms across
the state to showcase ingredi-
ents picked that morning, Mead-
ow Lark’s dinners take place
in the field amid tidy rows of
corn or cauliflower or meadows
packed with pumpkins on a table
set for 36. The evening kicks off
with an aperitif and an informal
tour of the farm. A troupe of
chefs prepare the meals on site,
supplementing with meat, eggs,
grains and breads sourced as
near to the table as possible.
MOUNTAIN GOAT
LODGE, SALIDA
This B&B settled in the Sawatch
Mountain Range boasts 19 acres
of rolling pastures home to the
“friendly and amusing” dairy
goats that make one of the inn’s
unique amenities possible —
guests are invited to participate
in cheese-making workshops on
chevre, mozzarella, feta, paneer
and even Greek yogurt. Whether
you want to make the cheese or
not, you will certainly sample
it at the farm breakfast, which
also includes Mountain Phoenix
coffee from the next town over,
free-range eggs and many other
local delights.
THE LIVING FARM,
PAONIAThe Living Farm has three ways
to get connected to the land. At
their Living Farm Cafe in town,
dishes show off the quality of
the ingredients with items like
goat eggrolls and fried green
tomatoes, baked mac and
cheese, and T-bone steaks. At
the adjacent farmers’ market,
fill a basket with locally made
jams, jellies, fruits and veggies,
honey, flowers, grass-fed beef,
pastured lamb, wool and yarn,
soaps and more. Educational
Backyard Seminars are offered
at the farm itself. The work-
shops include everything from
preserving your garden’s bounty
to gluten-free cooking, heritage
craft-making, wine appreciation
and panel discussions on fresh-
food preparation, solar energy Savor, Sample & Stay THE TASTY NEW SIDE OF COLORADO HERITAGE
Colorado farms and ranches are opening their barn doors to travelers looking for genuine experiences
that can include a range activities from cheese-making to picking dinner’s veggies, taking a sausage-making
class, enjoying a group picnic and shoeing horses to just a (delicious!) bed-and-breakfast stay.

Through the open back of the amphi-theater, you can see tall bright blue delphiniums, bright black-eyed Susans or perhaps pink cosmos. In more than one ballet performance here, I’ve seen the male dancer pluck an actual flower from the garden and hand it to his female partner.
DANCE AT THE TOPA SEAT AT MOTHER NATURE’S STAGEEach year during the two-week Vail International
Dance Festival, on early August evenings, the sun dips into the Vail Valley, turning the surrounding Gore Range hillsides into a forested amphitheater of light. Hummingbirds whir above glimmering Gore Creek, which rushes beneath Vail Village’s landmark cov-ered bridge and alongside the town’s Swiss-inspired storybook homes and hotels. A steady exodus begins from the village around 6:30pm. If you follow the blanket-toting procession along the meandering creek-side trail, past the Betty
Ford Alpine Gardens, you’ll discover an unexpected place of reverence for these evening pilgrims.Inside the open-air Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, the
dance world’s finest, famous and yet-to-be-famous take to the stage night after night for two weeks of dazzling dance traditions and surprises. Each year, I find myself among the devoted. I sit
impatiently in the audience before the festival’s popu-lar International Evening of Dance, too excited by the buzz around me to read the program, cursing myself for forgetting, yet again, to opt for warm tights, a pair of boots and a coat — instead of a summer dress and sandals — in the cool alpine air. >>
The Vail International Dance Festival brings the best and brightest
to Colorado for a grand tradition that’s taking on new life.

ALIVE 3 Summer Staples[
POPULAR MUSIC FESTS
1 COUNTRY JAM: JUNE 19–22, 2014 Simply
put, this is four days of great
country music with a fun, high-
energy crowd. Considered by
many to be one of the biggest
parties around, this event, which
in 2014 will include headliners
Eric Church, Lady Antebel-
lum and Jake Owen, at times
resembles a massive singalong.
The campgrounds, set on the 240-
acre Country Jam Ranch outside Grand Junction, bring
to mind a giant
tailgate party, with beer-pong
tournaments, pool parties, limbo
contests and the most Daisy
Dukes west of the Continental
Divide. And now, for the very
first time, you can rent your
own personal Port-a-Potty
(though organizers suggest you
bring your own lock to fend off
would-be trespassers).
2 BRAVO! VAIL: JUNE 27–AUG. 2, 2014
There will probably be very few
beer pong tournaments at this
festival, which each year hosts
three of the world’s most ac-
claimed orchestras in the Gerald
R. Ford Amphitheater, cradled
by the pristine and awe-inspir-
ing Gore Mountain Range. In
this exquisite setting, The Dallas
Symphony Orchestra, The
Philadelphia Orchestra and the
New York Philharmonic perform
classic pieces, as well as jazz
and pops, over the course of six
weeks. There is also a series
of chamber music concerts, a
free concert series and several
performances held at private
homes.
3 ROCKYGRASS: JULY 25–27, 2014 This
homage to traditional bluegrass
is renowned for the bluegrass
greats that come to play each
year. Held on the banks of the
St. Vrain River in Lyons (billed
by NPR as the “Nashville of the
Rockies”), RockyGrass is a veri-
table who’s who of bluegrass,
having hosted the likes of Ricky
Scaggs, Doc Wat-son, Tim O’Brien and Alison Krauss. Headliners play the stage throughout the day,
while impromptu picking parties
dot the surrounding woods.
At night after the shows, the
campground is suffused with
the high-lonesome sound as
festival-goers dig out their in-
struments and meet up for some
neighborly picking and fiddling,
and Lyons itself becomes part
of the festival, with live music
pretty much everywhere.
OPEN-AIR MUSIC EXTRAVAGANZAS,
LOCAL BREW FESTIVALS &
WILD WEST RODEOS
Summer in Colorado brings endless blue skies, pleasant temperatures and sparkling, sunny days. It also signals the
start of a season jam-packed with events designed to take advantage of Colorado’s singular beauty. And while we
love any venture that gets us out of doors, three things really get us amped for the sunshine days ahead: music, beer
and rodeos. Read on for where to find some of biggest and best celebrations in the state.
SUMMER STAPLES3
4 THE RIDE FEST: JULY 12–13 With musicians like David Byrne, Drive-
By Truckers and Rodrigo y Gabriela, the rock-focused Ride Fest in Telluride
is quickly garnering a reputation for great bands. The two-day event kicks
off with a sunset concert in the Mountain Village, which connects to town
via a free gondola. The remaining concerts play all weekend at the Town
Park Main Stage. Bonus: Festival passes include access to various after-
hours shows around town as well as one free drink at each venue.
