Whenever you purchase a car, you must register it in order to be legally able to drive it. The entire process may initially seem complicated, but it does not have to be. This guide will take you through each step in the process of registering your vehicle. You will also learn how to transfer your registration from another state and how to renew your vehicle registration even when you are out of state.

Vehicle

Registration

Purchasing a vehicle can be very exciting. Whether you are buying a car for the first time or have already purchased multiple vehicles in the past, making the decision to obtain a car is a big step that must be taken carefully to avoid any inconveniences.

Colorado requires vehicle insurance in order to make sure you are able to meet the financial responsibility that comes with a car accident. The state requires you to have liability insurance, which offers coverage in case you cause damage to another person or property due an accident for which you are at fault.

Registration Insurance

Requirements

Before you start the registration process, you should know that every car in Colorado is required to have liability insurance in order to be driven on any Colorado road or highway. This is vital since you must carry proof of insurance at all times and may be requested to show it by a police officer during a stop.

Colorado requires mandatory “med-pay” coverage in all insurance policies.

The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) established the following minimum requirements for liability insurance:

$50,000 per accident for bodily injury

$25,000 per person for bodily injury

$15,000 per accident for property damage

Bodily injury liability insurance covers injuries that you cause to another person, while property liability insurance covers up to $15,000 in damage to any cars, objects and structures that your car hits. However, these policies do not cover damage to you or your car if you are in an accident. Therefore, many drivers choose to purchase uninsured motorist, roadside assistance, comprehensive and collision coverage, as these cover the drivers and their own vehicles if they are in an accident.

Registering a car in Colorado will involve a different process if you are a military member. The requirements will vary depending on whether or not you are a Colorado resident.

Registration for Military Members

Colorado Resident

If you are military personnel stationed in Colorado, you may be able to receive Military-exempt plates. The process for obtaining them varies by county and may depend on your type of vehicle. Simply call 303-205-5600 and a representative will walk you through the steps to register your car.

Non-Residents Operating a Vehicle in Colorado

If you are not a Colorado resident but are stationed in Colorado, you are exempt from obtaining a Colorado driver license and registering your car in the state. However, you may choose to do so anyway. If you choose to register your car in the state, you may need to present your military ID and other documents. You should also complete a Nonresidence and Military Service Exemption from Specific Ownership Tax Affidavit (DR2667) to receive a tax exemption.

Renewing Your

Vehicle Registration

Much like with many important documents, such as your driver license, your vehicle registration will eventually expire. If you do not renew your registration, your vehicle will be deemed invalid to drive legally. This of course can be solved by simply making sure to renew your vehicle’s registration before the expiration date is allowed to pass by unattended. When it is time to renew your registration, you will be sent a registration renewal reminder card that you can use to renew by mail. However, you will be responsible for renewing your registration even if you do not receive a reminder.

You will have up to one month to renew your vehicle registration once the expiration date has passed. This time period is referred to as the “grace period.” To renew your vehicle registration in person, you will have to take the following steps:

Visit the DMV office.

If you would prefer to renew your vehicle registration by mail, skip going to the DMV office and follow the renewal directions on your vehicle registration reminder card to renew your registration. After you have completed the above steps, your renewed vehicle registration documents and license plate should arrive in the mail within 15 business days.

Provide proof of your emissions test, if necessary.

Provide the license plate number for the vehicle you are renewing.

Provide proof of your insurance policy.

Pay the renewal fee based on your vehicle.

License

Plates

When you register your vehicle at the Colorado DMV office, you will automatically be assigned a license plate number. This means that every time you go to renew your vehicle registration, your license plate will also be renewed. The DMV office will provide you with a decal to attach to your license plate. This decal will state the date of expiration. You will be responsible for keeping your license plate valid at all times in order to legally drive in the state of Colorado.

When you register a new vehicle, you will typically receive a standard Colorado license plate. However, you have other options when choosing license plates. For example, you can also choose to get a plate that best fits your tastes either in design, message or both. You also do not have to settle for standard license plates, as state of Colorado gives you the option of obtaining a license plate that fits your personality, hobbies or interests if your request is approved by the Colorado DMV.

Follow these steps to get a custom plate:

There are many different options for you to choose from if you are looking to obtain a personalized license plate for your vehicle. You can choose up to seven characters for your personalized license plate. However, if you are looking to get a personalized license plate for your motorcycle, you may only have six characters on your plate. Additionally, there are restrictions on what you are allowed to put on your personalized license plate. For example, your plates may not contain offensive or misleading materials, zeros, special symbols or too many characters. Be sure to check the regulations here before ordering custom plates. The Colorado DMV reserves the right to not approve your custom license plate request.

Getting Custom Plates

Fill out the Personalized License Plate Application form (DR2810).

Mail the application to the following address.

Department of Revenue Vehicle Services Unit P.O. Box 173350 Denver, Colorado 80217

Once you have applied, your custom plate will have to be approved by the Colorado DMV office. Once your request is approved, you will be notified through mail of the fee you must pay. Do not send payment with your application.

Finally, you will have to wait for your personalized plates to be created and for the DMV office to notify you that your plates have arrived and are ready for you to pick them up. Visit the DMV office to pick up your personalized plates. The DMV will hold your plates for a maximum of 12 months. If you do not pick them up within that time, your plates will be destroyed.

If your license plates are damaged, lost or stolen, you will need to replace them as soon as possible. You may request a replacement in person.

Just follow these steps:

Vehicle Safety

Tips

The most important consideration to take before you begin driving any vehicle is that both you and the vehicle are well prepared for any trip you make. This means checking your vehicle and making any necessary changes to ensure you are able to drive safely at all times.

One of the essentials to safe driving is having a basic emergency kit available in your vehicle at all times. This kit should include basic items such as water, extra batteries, rope, a first aid kit, matches and a whistle. During winter months it is also important to carry items such as blankets, non-perishable foods, extra gloves, socks and a shovel.

Emergency Kit

One of the most dangerous times to drive is during the winter, especially if you live in an area that gets a significant amount of snow. Therefore, it is best to consider these tips to drive safely during the winter.

Avoid Rushing

Roads are often covered in snow and ice after it snows, so instead of driving fast and risking an accident in your rush to get to your destination, try leaving a few minutes earlier than usual. This will allow you to drive more slowly and help you avoid driving aggressively.

Do Not Panic If You Skid or Slip

If your vehicle skids or slips while you are driving, do not slam down on your brakes. Instead, apply slow and even pressure on your brakes until you stop. This will help prevent you from spinning out of control.

Check Your Vehicle

Before you even leave your house, make sure your vehicle’s controls, brakes, tank, tires, antifreeze, exhaust, etc. are all working properly. It is also important that you remove all ice and snow from your car before you begin driving. This prevents the snow from blocking your view while you drive.

Using your cellphone is one of the most dangerous actions you can take while driving. During the few seconds your attention is diverted to your phone, a major accident could occur. Therefore, help prevent accidents by making sure not to text, use the Internet or receive calls while you are driving.

Using Your Phone

Every year, thousands are killed as a result of drinking and driving. Deaths related to drinking and driving are easily prevented. Doing so only requires that you plan ahead of time by taking these steps.

Before you begin drinking, you should arrange for someone else to be the designated driver. If that person also becomes intoxicated, it is important that you arrange to take a taxi. Do not allow someone who is drunk to drive.

If you see someone exhibiting signs of intoxication while driving, such as making wide turns, weaving, swerving, breaking erratically, turning abruptly, etc. call 911 and contact authorities immediately. Be sure to avoid them on the road to ensure your own safety.

Driving is not always relaxing. There are certain factors that can be both an annoyance and a danger to you while on the road. These are often avoidable if you make sure to take the necessary steps towards preventing them before they happen and addressing them once they occur.

Things To Avoid

Car Accidents

One of the best ways to avoid car accidents is to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive and will not cause you any problems. To do this, you only need to regularly check that your brakes are functioning properly, your tires are inflated and not worn out, and that the steering and suspensions are checked by a mechanic and will not fail while you drive, especially at high speeds. To further help prevent car accidents, make sure to drive defensively, following the rules of the road at all times.

Wasting Gas

Many drivers are constantly looking for ways to save money on trips to the gas station. Fortunately, saving on gas is possible if you take a few steps towards ensuring your car uses less gas. Some of the ways you can start saving gas are not using air conditioning, not driving above 60 mph and not leaving your engine running while parked. Avoiding these actions can help you significantly reduce your gasoline usage over time. Another way to save on gas is to make sure that your vehicle is functioning properly. You can do this by checking that your tires are properly inflated, your engine is well tuned and your octane levels are at the correct amount for your vehicle’s needs.

Aggressive Driving

Aggressive driving and aggressive drivers should be avoided if you want to prevent issues while on the road. Aggressive driving is categorized by behaviors like tailgating, verbal or physically harassing another driver, and preventing another driver from merging or passing. Aggressive driving puts others at risk and should always be avoided. If you encounter a frustrating situation on the road, instead of becoming aggressive, take a moment to breathe and focus on your own trip.
