“Color is a power which directly influences the soul,” a quote by Russian painter and art theorist Wassily Kandinsky. This garden design considers Kandinsky’s theory on the emotional associations of color. This is done through the use of monochromatic planting design in the presence of sunlight and reflection. The space consists of four, open-roofed cylindrical rooms encasing a deck and stepping-stones over water. The inner walls of each room are a myriad of vertical plantings in yellow, red, blue or green. The outer walls and ground beyond are planted in white and silver. This offers visitors both the contrast of white against the colorful rooms as well as a way to cleanse the palate between each space. The living walls themselves speak to the larger issue of population growth and vertical planting design as not just art, but also a future necessity.
