Things To Do
“Our shop in Liberty, Liberty Artisan & Craft Gallery, has a room where Morgan Reptile Replicas are on display. People come in just for curiosity, and end up buying things they never dreamed of. I’ve sold replicas to
people all over the U.S. and other countries, as well. I make them for nature centers, military bases, nature and science museums, and even for movie sets. I also do custom orders.
I thought I was going to retire after being a park ranger in Greensboro for 30 years, but I enjoyed the reptile replica
business so much that I’ve kept working. I first started selling replicas in 1989, and have had the shop for seven years. I have models of
snakes, lizards, frogs, crabs, salamanders, birds, fish andvarious other amphibians. We have more than 270 reptiles and amphibians to chose from, and I’m always looking for new specimens to add to the collection. At first, I sold them in an unfinished form, but I have developed an intricate process over the years that allows the reptiles to look like they’re actuallyalive. Having them look so realistic seems to be what people want.”

“Being the Chief Veterinarian, and director of the Hanes Veterinary
Medical Center at the North Carolina Zoo, my main
job is to keep the animals healthy.
The best way to do that is
t h r o u g h preventative care to keep any kind of illnesses from spreading. We
take care of animals here of all shapes and sizes from the very tiny poison dart frog, to elephants that weigh more than 12,000 pounds! I would have to say that one of the most exciting surgeries I’ve done was a C-section on a gorilla. She was having problems in the birthing process, and we saved the infant and the mother. That was one of the more satisfying feelings I’ve had. Of course, I love the Zoo but also love to go hiking in nearby Uwharrie National Forest. Ireally like the restaurants in downtown Asheboro, and Four Saints Brewery. Combining the friendliness of the people who grew up here with the energy of new people to the area has worked out well, and I love living here.”

“Some people only know me as the, “Orchid Lady”, . . . I got started many years ago byaccident. I had an orchid myself, and it was so beautiful but after the first flowers died it didn’t bloom again for years. I was determined to have another bloom and I found outthat if it had more sunlight it might bloom. And it did! I was so proud. Then one orchidbecame two, and two became ten, and by then I just couldn’t stop. I was hooked!
Currently, we have 37-acres and two greenhouses with approximately 5,400 square feet, and I proudly have more than 200 different types of orchids available.
I love the creative nature of the Seagrove area. Although I’m not a potter, I support as many potters as I can, and they support me, too. I’m very lucky that way.”

Golf:
“Holly Ridge Golf Links is an 18- hole golf course designed by Jim Bivins. It was opened in 1994,and is located near Archdale. We take great pride in the fact that Holly Ridge boasts some of the best conditions when it comes to public golf courses. This land is very special to me. It used to be our
family dairy farm; and my dad and two
other friends turned it into this golf
course. In addition to the golf course, we have a full kitchen, bar and grill, which is unique for a public golf course. We serve beer and wine, and have a full liquor bar; and our food is great, too! We alsohave a pro shop and offer golf lessons. Holly Ridge is a wonderful place to hold events, weddings, reunions and corporate outings and more!
For me, the people in Randolph County have always stood out as
being inclusive and warm, and I feel a sense of belonging here. Home, to me, is where I grew up, and I stay because I love my life here, and I love what I do.”

“I’ve had the privilege to be the general manager of
the Asheboro Copperheads since 2008. The Copperheads
are a collegiate summer team which means that every single
one of our players is a part of a college baseball team somewhere. There are 15 teams in the Coastal Plain League with the teams being from North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. Since we are non-professional, all of our players are non-paid. The benefit to the player is that they get an enormous amount of practice in their off-season from
school and regularly have scouts come to the games to look at the
players that have aspirations to go into professional baseball.
Each season, we play 28 home games for a total of 56 games – all in a 65-day period. On average, that’s more than they play in college.
Asheboro has always had a strong history in baseball, going all the way back to the early 1900s. Our field, McCrary Park, was built in 1948. American Legion games have beenplayed in Asheboro from the 50s to today; and the park has been home to their Southeast Regional Tournament each August for the past eight years. As I head into retirement soon, I’m proud that our team has become one of the top sports attractions in our community.”

Breweries & Wineries:
Joel McClosky & Andrew Deming at their Four SaintsBrewing Company
“Four Saints Brewing Company came about as my partner, Andrew, our friend, Pete, and I were having a conversation in a garage a few years ago, and discovered that there were four patron saints of brewing. The rest is history. There are four main ingredients in making beer. Malts, which include barley, wheat, and other grains. We mix the
malts, crush them up, add water, and it becomes mash. The mash will steep for about an hour, and produce flavor, color, aroma, and fermentable sugars. Once that’s done it becomes wort, which is boiled to reduce it down and we add in hops, which gives it a certain bitterness, and acts as a preservative. After boiling for about an hour, the fermentation process begins and we add yeast. The beer takes about three to four weeks to ferment. Then we add carbon dioxide to carbonate it, put it in kegs, and serve it up!
We have different events through-out the week, for instance, on Thursdays, we have Team Trivia & Theme Trivia that’s great fun. We also serve local prepackaged food from area restaurants that offer food delivery. We really love what we do, and have found Asheboro to be a fantastic community!”
