2. CHANGES OF THE 20TH CENTURY IN ALBANY’S SOUTH END

ALBANY – As part of the 16th Annual Hudson River Valley Ramble, Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site invites you to take a virtual ramble of Albany’s Historic South End, pre-sented by City Historian Tony Opalka. Using seldom seen im-ages of a century ago, Mr. Opalka’s presentation will explore how the continuous fabric of the South End has been broken up into smaller enclaves by urban renewal programs of the 20th century, and discover what neighborhoods and ethnic groups have disappeared. A walk in the South End will follow. The presentation will be held at Schuyler Mansion on Satur-day, September 26, at 10:00am. As space is limited, reserva-tions are required. For further information, or to reserve your place, please call the site at (518) 434-0834 by September 22. Rain Date: Sunday, September 27 at 12:30pm. The Ramble brings people outside to enjoy our distinct cultural heritage and the natural resources of the Hudson Valley during the Northeast’s most beautiful time of the year. More than 150 environmental, land conservancy, trail and historic preserva-tion organizations, New York State historic sites and parks, as well as the National Park Service participate by off ering events, and many are free of charge and family friendly. For a complete listing of events, visit www.hudsonrivervalley-ramble.com or look for the Ramble guide at most cultural institutions and historic sites. Schuyler Mansion, located at 32 Catherine Street in Albany’s historic South End, was the 18th-century home of Revolutionary War Major-General Phil-ip Schuyler (1733-1804) and his family. The mansion is open for guided tours Wednesday through Sunday, 11am to 5pm. For further information about this or other site events, please visit www.parks.ny.gov, www.schuylerfriends.org, or fi nd us on Facebook.

•BasementCleanouts It’s hard to believe that all the beauty of our flowerbeds is only a month away

from getting frosted away. Maybe we’ll be lucky and frost will hold off until sometime in October. We can hope that we get a little extra growing season this fall but Mother Nature plays by no one’s rules and will do what she’ll do regardless of what we wish would happen. With that in mind, the wise gardener will proceed with the annual cycle and dive right into fall planting projects while there are still nice days left to work outside in the garden. The day will soon arrive when it’ll be too cold to enjoy working outside and you’ll be kicking yourself for not taking advantage earlier when it was pleasant. One of my favorite tasks is adding to our collection of spring flowering bulbs that need to be planted now. Planting bulbs in fall gives us a chance to thumb our noses at winter. It is an act of faith. By planting these bulbs, we are saying, “I know that the next season will arrive a little brighter and better.” You may be planting flower bulbs, but you are really sowing Nature’s promise that the dark days of winter will eventually pass. These small bulbs are a miracle in themselves. Think of them as rechargeable batteries. They don’t store electricity but “growth energy”. When you buy bulbs, they’re all “charged up” for you by the producer in Holland. When you shop for bulbs, look for the largest you can find. Bulbs produced in Holland are still the best available. The Dutch have been active in bulb culture since the 1500s so they’ve had a lot of practice. Make sure that the area you wish to plant is sunny and well drained. Well-drained means that the area dries rapidly enough after rain to avoid standing water. I don’t have space enough here to describe all the planting depths and spacing requirements of the myriad of bulbs available. This information is on the bulb’s packaging. Look for “early”, “mid” and “late” flowering designations when shopping for bulbs. This will help you stage the progression of color in your garden. Generally, crocus and other small bulbs flower earlier than the larger, showier bulbs like allium. Flower heights are noted on the packages as well so you can avoid planting shorter varieties behind taller ones. Make sure to build up the soil where you are planting your bulbs. The most important soil additive you’ll need is bone meal. The phosphorus in bone meal is vital in restoring and expanding the bulbs after the flowering period. It should be mixed with the soil BELOW the bulb so the roots grow down through it. Bone meal doesn’t dissolve like chemical fertilizer so your only chance to use it is when you’re planting. The phosphorus in bone meal lasts 4 or 5 years. By then, with proper feeding and care, the bulbs will need to be divided and replanted with more bone meal. After you plant you bulbs, be sure to water them in right away. They will take advantage of the cool weather to grow roots into their new home. The trick to perpetual success with bulbs is knowing how to “recharge” the bulbs after they flower in spring. The “growth energy” stored in the bulb is depleted quickly during the all-out effort to reproduce (flower) in spring. After the flowers go by, cut them off including the stem. This prevents the bulb from wasting “growth energy” producing seeds. The “growth energy” that would have been spent producing seeds is directed to the bulb where it is stored until the next spring’s flowering cycle. Feed your bulbs during their growth cycle; starting when the first shoots appear in spring. Bulb food (my favorite is Bulb-Tone) will provide the balance of nutrients your bulbs will need in addition to the phosphorus from the bone meal. Think of the leaves of your bulbs as solar collectors that change sunlight into more “growth energy” that is sent to the bulb below for storage. Don’t cut these solar collectors off when you remove the spent blossoms in spring. Let them remain until they finish charging up your “bulb batteries”. They will eventually turn yellow, letting you know that it’s time to cut them off. Remember, bulbs look best when planted in groups of five or more. I prefer to plant them in irregular “drifts” for a more natural appearance. This is a matter of taste so, feel free to use your imagination. Have fun! Thanks for the read.

NEW SCOTLAND HAMLET ZONING & SITE DESIGN NEW SCOTLAND – The New Scotland Hamlet Zoning and Site Design Standards Study Advi-sory Committee has scheduled a public workshop for Thursday, September 24 at the Voor-heesville High School Commons from 7:00-9:00pm. The purpose of this meeting is to gather feedback from the public on potential zoning strategies for the New Scotland Hamlet area. The purpose of this study, which kicked off in April of this year, is to create a mixed-use zon-ing district to replace the current commercial zoning in the area surrounding the Route 85 and Route 85A intersection. Any new zoning district proposed will support the Town of New Scotland’s implementation of the Hamlet Master Plan that was completed in 2012. This study also includes the development of design standards for the new district that balance the area’s significance as the town’s largest commercial zone with the highly scenic and rural character of the community. The Study Advisory Committee has assisted in this planning effort. The Committee consists of residents appointed by the Town Board, Albany County, the Capital District Regional Planning Commission, New York State Department of Transportation, and the Capital District Transportation Authority. The Capital District Transportation Committee and the Town chose AECOM (formerly known as URS Corporation) to conduct the study based on their extensive experience and skill in land use planning and zoning in communities simi-lar to New Scotland. The Study Advisory Committee has met regularly since April to prepare materials and plan for the public workshop. Further information on the project and upcom-ing meetings can be found at www.newscotlandzoning.blogspot.com / and at www.townof-newscotland.com in the town calendar. “This work is the culmination of significant planning efforts by the Town and several county agencies”, said Thomas E. Dolin, Supervisor of the Town of New Scotland. “We look forward to new zoning recommendations for this important commercial zone in our town.” This study is being funded through the Capital District Trans-portation Committee’s (CDTC) Linkage Program. The study has a total budget of $70,000, $52,000 of which is paid by CDTC and $17,500 by local cash match. CDTC is the metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for the Albany-Schenectady-Troy and Saratoga Springs metro-politan area. CDTC provides a forum for state and local officials to discuss transportation issues and reach a consensus on transportation plans and programs. The CDTC Linkage Pro-gram has funded 83 studies, with an investment of over $5 million in federal, state, and local funds since it began in 2000. Learn more about the Capital District Transportation Committee at www.cdtcmpo.org.

SEEKING FALL INTERNSCAPITAL REGION – If you are a current university/college student interested in gaining first-hand experience in nonprofit administration, project management, and international affairs, consider applying to the International Center of the Capital Region for a non-paid, fall intern-ship. ICCR focuses on promoting citizen diplomacy and global awareness and has been wel-coming the World to the Capital Region for 60 years. For further information and/or to acquire an intern application, please visit www.iccralbany.org under the Get Involved tab.

SEEKING TAX ASSISTANCE VOLUNTEERSCAPITAL DISTRICT – TaxAide, the free income tax assistance program sponsored by AARP Foundation and the IRS, is seeking volunteers for the coming tax season. TaxAide volunteers answer questions, prepare and file returns for low to moderate income taxpayers and seniors from February 1 to April 15 at various sites in the Capital District. Volunteers typically par-ticipate one day per week, with flexible schedules to accommodate volunteer availability. No experience is required, but computer experience is helpful. Training is provided. Volunteers may be reimbursed for a moderate level of necessary travel expenses. For further information, visit www.aarp.org/taxaide or contact Local Coordinator Gail Carroll at 518-541-3173 or at [email protected]

THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE” CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joyful Noise was a contemporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritually and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Music Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the recognition, that still, “We are One”. A re-union is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culminate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the par-ents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us during our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former mem-bers, and identifying folks to assist on various committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Christian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

OLD FASHIONED SUNDAYNEWTONVILLE – The Friends of Pruyn House will celebrate the 32nd annual “Old Fashioned Sunday” at the Pruyn House, 207 Old Niskayuna Rd., Newtonville, on Sunday September 13th from 12 noon to 4pm. The public is invited to this FREE event, which will be held rain or shine. Old Fashioned Sunday is a festive fun day in a lovely setting at this 5-1/2 acre site. The his-toric house built between 1825 and 1830 will be open for touring. The day will feature music throughout the afternoon featuring three different bands from the Town of Colonie. A num-ber of attractions are planned including Old Tyme craft demonstrations, exhibits, vendors, visiting the beautiful gardens and other outbuildings such as the one-room schoolhouse and tool museum. For children, there will be pony rides, face painting, a storyteller, a magician, an art show and live animals. There will be homemade baked goods as well as vendors selling hamburgers, hot dogs, soda, ice cream and popcorn. Old Fashioned Sunday is hosted by the Friends of Pruyn House. The mission of the Friends of Pruyn House, a not-for-profit communi-ty organization in partnership with the Town of Colonie, serving as the educational, historical and cultural center of the Town, is to restore, conserve and preserve the Pruyn House Com-plex. It is the site for a wide variety of public, private, civic and corporate events throughout the year. For further information, call the Pruyn House at (518) 783-1435.
