Essential Question: How did the colonial regions differ in terms of climate, resources, and people?

Growth of the Colonies

Colonial population grew rapidly from 1700-1750

During this time, 3 distinct regions formed: New England Middle Colonies Southern Colonies

These regions were different in terms of Climate Resources People

Differences between the Colonial Regions

New England: long winters, rocky soil, English settlers made up most of the population

Middle Colonies: shorter winters, fertile soil, many immigrants from all over Europe made up the population

Southern Colonies: warm climate, good soil, Africans were enslaved to work on large plantations

New England participated in three types of trade: Trade with other

colonies Direct exchange of

goods with Europe Triangular Trade

Triangular Trade was the name given to a trading route with 3 stops

Atlantic Trade

New England became wealthy through trade

To ensure their own economic gain, England passed the Navigation Acts in 1651

Navigation Acts

The four provisions of the Navigation Acts were: All shipping must be done in English ships or ships

made in the colonies Products such as tobacco, wood and sugar could only

be sold to England or its colonies European imports to the colonies had to pass through

English ports English officials were to tax any colonial goods not

shipped to England

Response to Navigation Acts

Many merchants ignored theses acts

Merchants began smuggling goods to avoid paying taxes to the British

Many different groups settled in the Middle Colonies, often looking for religious freedom

So many different groups in the area created a more tolerant society than the one in New England

Religious groups, such as the Quakers, also promoted tolerance and equality of all people, including slaves & women

Growth of Cities in the Middle Colonies

The physical geography of the Middle Colonies helped promote the growth of cities

An abundance of rivers allowed many port cities to develop Examples: New York &

Philadelphia Port cities generated

wealth through trade which led to public improvements Graceful buildings, paved

roads

Spotlight on the Southern Colonies

Before the 1660s, African & European indentured servants worked the fields together

During the 1660s, many indentured servants left plantations to buy their own land

Landowners needed another source of labor and turned toward enslaved Africans

Southern Colonies Stats

By 1750, 85% of enslaved Africans in the colonies lived in the south

Enslaved Africans made up 40% of the South’s population
