Recent Awards and Praise“It seemed like all the grownups in America despised comic books, but Baron didn’t care what people thought then, and he doesn’t care now. He’s always viewed comics as a valuable tool for ‘communicating history, and the history of people through art as well as words,’ he says today, as he approaches his 82nd birthday. At a time when most of his contemporaries are long retired, Baron’s Golden-based Fulcrum Publishing is enjoying a second, even third wind — as the creator of educational comics. Getting kids to read? That’s a job for a superhero”
—Denver Westword
Strange Fruit
“Still more thoughtful reflections come from Joel Christian Gill’s graphic novel Strange Fruit: Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History, which unpacks its power through drawings and pointed text that chronicle the trials and triumphs of black Americans who struggled against prejudice more than a century ago. At a moment when racial inequities have ignited this nation, Mr. Gill offers direction for the road ahead from the road behind.”
—The New York Times
Life in New York
“The prolific author and playwright Laura Pedersen parcels her stream of consciousness into wily and witty essays in Life in New York: How I Learned to Love Squeegee Men, Token Suckers, Trash Twisters and Subway Sharks (Fulcrum).”

Powering ForwardWhat Every American Should Know About the Energy RevolutionBill Ritter, Jr.
Written in partnership with the Center for a New Energy Economy
A historic energy revolution is underway in the United States. Wind, sunlight, and other sustain-able resources are now the fastest growing sources of energy in the U.S. and worldwide. American families are installing power plants on their roofs and entire commu-nities are switching to 100 perent-renewable energy. The urgent need to prevent climate change is caus-ing people around the planet to question their reliance on carbon-intensive oil, coal, and natural gas. Author Bill Ritter Jr., the 41st governor of Colorado and one of America’s key thought leaders on this topic, discusses the forces behind the energy revolution, the new ways we must think about energy, and the future of fossil and renewable fuels. It is
an essential read for any who want to understand one of history’s biggest challenges to peace, pros-perity, and security in the United States.
Bill Ritter was elected Colorado's 41st governor in 2006, and dur-ing his four-year term, Ritter established Colorado as a national and international leader in clean energy, by building a new energy economy. He is the founder and director of the Center for the New Energy Economy (CNEE) at Colo-rado State University and lives in Denver with his wife and four children.

Life in New YorkHow I Learned to Love Squeegee Men, Token Suckers, Trash Twisters, and Subway Sharks Laura Pedersen
“For longtime New Yorkers who remember Times Square before the Disney invasion, Life in New York is a very funny walk down memory lane.” —Woman Around Town
New Yorkers are as diverse as the city they so colorfully inhabit, cautious but generous, brash but welcoming. Both are captured through the come-dic eye of Laura Pedersen. The author of bestseller Play Money, Pedersen serves up a hilarious memoir about three decades of city life. Pedersen experiences her adopted city in the best and worst of times while becoming the youngest person to have a seat on the stock exchange, per-forming stand-up comedy, and writing a column in The New York Times.
Enjoy an uproarious romp through the past as the city emerges as the modern metrop-olis we know today.
Laura Pedersen is a former New York Times columnist, the author of fifteen books includ-ing the award-winning humor-ous memoir Buffalo Gal, and a playwright. She has appeared on Oprah and David Letter-man, performed stand-up at the Improv, and writes for several well-known comedians. Her award-winning play The Bright-ness of Heaven ran at New York’s Cherry Lane Theatre in 2014. More information is available at www.LauraPedersenBooks.com.

Brothers of the BuffaloA Novel of the Red River War Joseph Bruchac
An internationally acclaimed Native American storyteller and writer explores the battles of the Red River War from the perspec-tive of both a U.S. cavalryman and a Cheyenne warrior. In 1874, the U.S. Army sent troops to subdue and move the Native Americans of the southern plains to Indian reservations and this young adult novel chronicles the brief and brutal war that fol-lowed. Told from the viewpoint of two youths from opposite sides of the fight, Brothers of the Buffalo portrays the events surrounding this conflict in the Wild West.
Joseph Bruchac, coauthor of the lauded Keepers of the Earth series, is a nationally acclaimed Native American storyteller and writer who has authored more than 70 books of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for adults and children. He lives in upstate New York.

Colonial Comics: New England: 1750–1775Edited by Jason Rodriguez
A massacre in Boston. A tea party. A shot heard around the world. But who was the first casu-alty of the massacre? How did the tea get to Boston Harbor? What was the Battle of Concord like for a Minute Man?
Colonial Comics: New England, 1750–1775 expands the frame of this infamous period of Ameri-can History. Unconventional characters come to life includ-ing grave-digging medical students, counterfeiters, female playwrights, instigators of civil disobedience, newspaper edi-tors, college students, rum trad-ers, freemen, and slaves. This second volume of the Colonial Comics trilogy is an artful look of what life was like in the Pre-Revolutionary period and illus-trates how the Revolutionary spirit spread to the common man and woman, one gorgeous comic
story at a time.
Jason Rodriguez is a writer and editor, whose books have been nominated for an Eisner Award and eight Harvey Awards. Jason lives in Arlington, Virginia with his wife and their two dogs, four cats, and a parrot. You can usu-ally find him on a street corner, staring out into the future. Rich People Behaving Badly Dick Kreck
Public respectability does not always translate into tidy private lives, and our interest in the bad behavior of the rich and famous will never be satisfied. Former Denver Post reporter Dick Kreck takes us back in Colorado's his-tory and shows us that the foibles of people—rich or poor—remain the same. Included are socialites such as Louise Sneed Hill, who created and ruled over Denver’s “Sacred 36” circle of society; Jane Tomberlin, who met and fell in love with a “prince” in an eleva-tor at the Brown Palace Hotel; Irene Nolan, who cavorted late into the night with her family priest; and prominent Denver clubman Courtland Dines, who was wounded during a frolic with two silent-screen stars in his Hol-lywood apartment.
Rich People Behaving Badly exposes the scandals, murders, infidelities, financial misdeeds, and just plain misbehavior from Colorado's past.
Dick Kreck retired from the Denver Post after thirty-eight years as an editor and columnist. He previously worked at The San Francisco Examiner and the Los Angeles Times. He is the author of six other books, including Mur-der at the Brown Palace: A True Story of Seduction and Betrayal and Smaldone: The Untold Story of an American Crime Family. He lives in Denver, Colorado.

"I learned a lot about the Mowachaht from the early 19th century...That's as much due to Michael Short's images as to Jewitt and Goldfield's words. She gives life to the story and tells it in a clear and compelling way. [Mike Short is] aided by impressive inks from Matt Dembicki and a gorgeous color palette from Evan Keeling that brings to the page very nicely the beauty of the Pacific Northwest."

rules oF the roadFinding fossils is fun, but it’s important that you follow the rules if you want to collect them. For private property, always get permission from the landowner before you start to look for fossils. For state land (this includes a lot of road cuts and parks), check with the state archaeologist (sadly, most states don’t have a state paleontologist) before you go, since rules vary from state to state. On Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, you can collect reasonable amounts of plant and invertebrate fossils for personal, noncommercial use, but you can’t collect bones, teeth, or skeletons without a professional permit. Check in at local BLM offices for additional rules and recommendations. The U.S. Forest Service has similar regulations, so check with local ranger stations to get specific details. Collecting is forbidden in National Parks.
Some museums and fossil clubs organize fossil digs (see the list below). This is a good way to learn the rules of the road and get your questions answered. But no matter where you are or who you’re with, if you find something really cool, contact a paleontologist.
stuff Your Mom and dr. Johnson Would Want You to bring on Your Fossil digFood and LOTS of water
Sensible shoes for hiking long distances
Sunscreen, hat, and work gloves
Toilet paper (Not just for roadside emergencies! It’s the best thing for wrapping delicate fossils.)
Small sledgehammer for busting open concretions
Handheld GPS device to record the location of your finds
Rock hammer, shovels, crowbar (for prying rock layers apart). For the truly serious, a pickax.
