1 Colonel Albert Henry Hollister, 1843 -1910 “Biographical Sketch of a Wisconsin Civil War VetFrom Pendleton, Niagra Co., NY. to Clinton, Rock Co., WI. Compiled and annotated by: Robert C. Kuhmann, of Delavan, Wisconsin, in June of 2012. ALBERT HENRY HOLLISTER son of Perez; of Nathaniel; of Nathaniel; of Gideon; of Thomas; of John; of John. - Albert Henry, son of Perez S. Hollister and Angeline T. Clark, was born in Pendleton, NY. 1 , Sept 23, 1843. His mother died when he was 3 years old, and when 8 years of age, he left his father's home, and began earning his living working in a grocery store and drug store. In 1857, he went to Milwaukee, Wis. and worked 3 summers with his brother Lauren 2 , who was an engineer, going to school in the winters, at Horicon 3 and Dodge's Corners 4 , Wis. He lived afterward at Waterford, Wis. and attended school at Allen Grove Academy, under the instruction of those excellent teachers M. Montague and Miss M.G. Sherman. It was here, he met the lady who afterward became his wife. In August 1862, before he was 19, he enlisted in Co. F. 22d Reg., 1st Wis. Vol. Inf., and served in Kentucky and Tennessee, chasing-up Morgan's guerillas 5 . At Nicholasville, Ky. he had charge of the regimental hospital. While what was left of his regiment after the battle of Thompson's Station, Tenn 6 . were guarding the quartermaster's stores at Brentwood, Tenn., they were surprised and captured by a large force of Forrest's 7 mounted men, and taken to Columbia, Tenn. - where he was left in a weak condition by a bilious attack, in a rebel hospital, for a short time - with many of his brigade, who were wounded and captured at Thompson's Station. The 1 Pendleton is a town on the southern edge of Niagara County, New York, United States. It is east of the city of Niagara Falls and southwest of the city of Lockport. 2 Lauren N. Hollister 1836-????. 3 Horicon, Dodge Co., WI., site of the Horicon Marsh wildlife refuge. 4 Named after John Dodge, who settled the area in 1836. 5 AKA “Morgan’s Raiders” - John Hunt Morgan (1825-1864) was a Confederate general and cavalry officer in the American Civil War. Morgan is best known for Morgan's Raid when, in 1863, he and his men rode over 1,000 miles covering a region from Tennessee, up through Kentucky, into Indiana and on to southern Ohio. This would be the farthest north any uniformed Confederate troops penetrated during the war. 6 The Battle of Thompson's Station occurred on 5-Mar-1863 in Williamson Co., TN. 7 Lieutenant-General Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1865 - as then, US Senator Daniel said, "what genius was in that wonderful man! He felt the field as Blind Tom touches the keys of the piano. 'War means killing," he said, " and the way to kill is to get there first with the most men." Forrest was not taught at West Point, but he gave lessons to West Point. By European authority he was pronounced the most magnificent cavalry officer that America had produced.

mortality among his comrades was so great there that fearing his own time would soon come, he bribed one of the attendants with a five dollar greenback to assist him off on the road to Richmond, Va. which he did. After remaining in Libby Prison 42 days, he was exchanged, more dead than alive, and went into the hospital at Annapolis, Md. After convalescence, he went to Washington D.C., and after examination before Gen Casey's military board, received a first class 1st lieutenant's commission, in the 30th Regt. U.S.C.T.8 Getting a leave of absence, he went to Darien, Wis. and married Jennie, daughter of Cyrus and Mary M. Farnsworth, March 3, 1864. Returning to the army, he was assigned to duty in organizing and sending recruits to the front at Camp Birney, Baltimore, MD. Hard work and exposure here, brought on a severe attack of rheumatism. After partially recovering from this, he joined his regiment at Annapolis, and went with it through the Wilderness Campaign9, into the trenches at Petersburgh, VA. His health failing, he was sent to the rear, and was afterward in detached service at Camp Cadwallader, Philadelphia, Penn., and while on duty there, as mustering, he resigned June 12, 1865, and went to Clinton, Wis. engaged in the drug10 business. He took an active part [in] village and church matters, was one of the organizers the Rock Co. S. S. Association, of which, he was its president for several years, until he removed from county. His wife died April 26, 1874, and he sold his business, and went to Madison, Wis. where he is engaged in the wholesale and retail drug trade. He [was] one of the organizers of the Wisconsin Association in 1880; chairman of its first meeting; an active part in securing a pharmacy law for the State; was commissioned a member of the State Board of Pharmacy; and reappointed his own successor for 5 years; chairman of the commission that secured the passage a law regulating the sale of liquors by druggists; which an equitable and just law; and a credit to the of the American Pharmaceutical Association; and president of the National Retail Druggists Association. He was the first mover to secure the establishment of the Lake Monona Assembly, patterned after Chautauqua, and called the "Chautauqua of the West", of which he has always been one of the most active promoters. He is a graduate of Chautauqua, a member of the Congregational church, of the G.A.R,, the Loyal Legion of the U.S., the Masonic Order, and the A.O.U.W, He was a member of the city council 2 years. He married 2d, K. E. Van Hoesen, Oct. 3, 1876. She is a daughter of Jacob and Mary Knoll Van Hoesen of Homer, NY. Child by 1st wife: Albert Sherman, b.Apr. 12, 1866, d.June 2, 1872.

MILITARY Records: CIVIL WAR – “Wisconsin Volunteers" - Hollister enlisted as a private in Company F, 22nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, at Waterford, Racine Co., WI., on August 14, 1862. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company K, 30th U.S.C.T. on March 14, 1864. He resigned on June 12, 1865. He served with the 30th U.S.C.T. = "US Colored Troops". Colonel, Wisconsin National Guard (after the Civil War), c.f. photo (on page 1): He is wearing the M1884 Officer's Dress Coat; uniform trousers. He wears an unidentified medal and a GAR membership badge with Colonel's Eagle for Post Commander.
