Collision Avoidance: Matrix of Technologies

1. INTRODUCTION

The first Collision Avoidance Working Group meeting that occurred on the 8th August 2006 and previous work done within Anglo American plc’s divisions identified that workable technologies exist for automated detection systems that draw attention to potential collisions. It was however realised that the products were numerous, each with their own peculiarities and shortcomings. One of the outcomes of the first working group meeting was to compile a “Matrix of Technologies” to identify and verify the various systems available in the market, the locations, the mines, for how long have they been working etc. This is a revised version of the original document directed at automatic detection systems that draw attention to potential collisions. It is recognised that there are some technologies/systems that could have been overlooked in the course of this survey due to the lack of information. It must however be stressed that these detection systems will be complementary and are not a substitute for rules and codes of conduct.

The “Ranking” classification used in the Matrix is as follows: Red Technology Exist, Not yet tested or no knowledge of the technology in the field or on an operational site

Orange Technology Exist, Developed and being tested on an operation, tests not yet conclusive. Reliability not proven.

Yellow

Appears from research papers and discussions with operators and suppliers that the systems are implemented and working successful on an operation. System or site has not been visited or verified by Anglo American representatives to verify that system is still installed on the operation, being used and achieve the objectives.

Green Implemented and working successful on an operation.

Vehicle Collision Avoidance System (VCAS) for use on road construction rollers.

Tarmac presented a paper at the 2004 Anglo American Group Technical Conference –Surface Vehicle Safety. The paper dealt with the use of additional equipment to help prevent collisions. The paper concluded that using ultrasonic technology can be reliably used to sense objects in the path of large vehicles (e.g. road roller) and apply the brakes automatically without input from the vehicle operator. A key characteristic of the system did not require the object to be tagged with a transmitter.

Two suppliers recommended: 1. The Advanced Mining Technologies CAS-CAM/RF® System utilises two state-of-the-art technologies to aid in the prevention of collisions:-Colour video cameras with a high resolution LCD Display Unit, and Radio Frequency (RF) transceivers. These technologies have been integrated into a unique collision avoidance system providing the operators with advanced automatic object detection and classification. Suppliers have indicated that the cameras are essential; This system is not applicable to underground mines. 2. Becker Electronics (Pty) Ltd; Integrated

Collision Avoidance and Camera System. The system uses a combination of RFID and Cameras to alert the diver of encroaching vehicles. All vehicles are fitted with a transponder which transmits a unique ID. This RF signal is decoded by one of the digital receivers (DPOD) connected to the CAS controller. An audible alarm and the number of vehicles in the immediate area are displayed on the CAS Unit. Larger vehicles are fitted with multiple DPOD antennas and a LED cluster unit to indicate the direction from which the approaching vehicle is coming from. On smaller vehicles an omni directional ladders antenna with a DPOD’s is used and surrounding transponders are decoded directly by the CAS unit by means of a centrally positioned antenna. In addition a reverse gear contact is connected in parallel to the system and will trigger the rear camera when activated. The ranges being achieved are in excess of 150 meters but will be reduced to +/- 100m

A system developed in conjunction with the University of Sydney, NSW, Australian Centre for Field Robotics (Acfr) University of Sydney. Implemented on Alcoa mines. Uses a combination of Mesh networks and GPS. The AcuMine Haul Truck Safety System: 1. Uses multiple technologies to provide the most efficient fail safe warnings to operators of heavy equipment of potentially dangerous situations so as to avoid accidents. 2. The system implements a self healing and robust wireless mesh network to detect the threats. 3. An Inference Engine analyses each threat situation and only alarms when the "level of risk" (as pre-determined by the mine) is exceeded. 4. The mesh network forms the basis of the Fleet Management. The system logs position, velocity, proximity, alarms, truck deviations and other vehicle parameters (e.g. tyre pressure) and this info generates an equipment installation report for production and planning purposes.

Vehicle Proximity Warning System Using GPS and Wireless Network Communications

Arizona, USA. The project incorporated three different technologies: a GPS mobile system, a wireless Communication network, and a 3D mapping and graphical interface software system. All three technologies were combined and controlled in a real-time software system called Virtual Mine. In summary, the system calculates the position of the haul truck with reference to the Digital Terrain Model, visually displays the environment on an onboard LCD screen, and by means of voice, alerts the driver of possible collisions. Relative position to other vehicles is easily viewed in the cab, and the central control point. Distance and position is communicated to the driver in real time and affords the driver enough time to take appropriate action. Backing up to tip overburden is visual. The system power is able to provide a platform for multiple management systems. System has not been commercialised.

Low frequency RFID system used for underground and surface operations. This type of low frequency RFID system works on the principle of a ferrite core antenna, a tag and an alarm display. The technology was developed by NIOSH at their Pittsburg laboratories and was later licensed to companies who where interested in commercialising the technology. Four companies have bought licences for the technology from NIOSH. These are ICG Addcar, Geosteering, Nautilus International, Frederick Energy and Alliance. Range was seen to be 8m – 10m. Technology currently used for proximity around remote controlled continuous miner machines in underground coal mines.

mining industry providing collision avoidance solutions using low frequency radio waves. Although VAK uses Selectronic technology, VAK has developed an antenna specifically for the underground environment thereby displaying design capability in house. There is also evidence that Very Low Frequency Radio (VLFR) can propagate through rock. The underground system is explained below: A vehicle is equipped with two low frequency transmitters (front and back), thereby creating a field of approx. 8m in front of/behind the vehicle and 5m to the sides. The antenna is developed in house and has an additional feature of a signal free zone for the vehicle operator. The transmitter power supply is also developed in house. The tag is installed in the battery of the caplamp. The tag has a three-axis receiver and causes the cap lamp to flash when the receiver is in the zone of the vehicle transmitter the option to include a buzzer to alert the mining personnel is now available. Further developments have been carried out to create a second inner warning zone to alert the operator of the vehicle, this zone is set to approximately 3 meters.

together system that revolutionizes RFID (radio frequency identification) by providing active wireless identification, management and monitoring by means of a graphic user interface. The system is active 24/7 and can be combined with GSM, GPS and Wireless LAN technology. Monitoring of people and assets are made possible not only in a local environment, also globally. CSI indicated that they have the ability to build a system to suit the needs of the customer. Some of their solutions for the under ground mining industry are: 1. Bona Loco – tags and receivers placed on locomotives that govern locomotive speed when they approach within a specified distance of one another. 2. Safuna – alarms the equipment operator that a tagged person is within a critical danger zone of the vehicle. The vehicle is then governed to 1000 rpm. 3. Hima traffic control – traffic lights are switched when a tag passes the control robot, thereby indicating to other locomotives on the track.

Scraper Winch Proximity Device

Orange

R&D at Union 4B Decline Shaft Scraper winch danger triangle personnel detection : UHF device Tags in cap lamps 2-3 or more receiver / transmitters positioned in danger triangle. Main receiver at the winch power supply circuit The device has been assessed and found capable of performing. However, constant movement of the face and the rigging demands high support during the positioning of transmitters and their set up. This is problematic in the current climate of shortage of skills (electricians). The implementation is not given a green light at this stage.
