Collingwood College
in Art and Design
This Level 3 BTEC qualification is a two-year practical course
and is worth the equivalent points to an A Level. It is designed
for students who aim to progress to higher education and
ultimately to employment, possibly in the creative industries. It
is designed to be studied as part of a programme alongside
other BTEC Nationals or A Levels. The qualification gives a
coherent introduction to the study of art and design.
Progression :
This qualification gives students specialist knowledge and skills, enabling
entry to an apprenticeship or other employment, or progression to related
further education and higher education courses. Many students have
progressed onto the Foundation Courses at UCA, others have gained places
at various universities including: Epsom to study Fashion Journalism,
Southampton to study Graphic Design, Brighton to study Illustration, Farnham
UCA to study Computer Games Art.
BTEC Extended Certificate in Art and Design
This qualification consists of 4 units of study: 3 core units 1 specialist unit (Fine Art Materials, Techniques and Processes) Units of study Unit 1 - Visual Recording and Communication: Students are given a theme and a task and have a preparation period where they will produce a developmental portfolio of work. This is followed by a 3 hour supervised assessment. Throughout this unit students will extend their drawing and recording skills through exploring the work of others, evaluating, developing and refining their own work. Unit 2 – Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design: Students are given a research brief and a task and have a preparation period followed by a 5 hour supervised assessment where they will complete a written submission. Throughout this unit students will learn to critically analyse pieces of art and design work, deconstructing images and thinking critically about what they see. Unit 3 – The Creative Process: Students complete an art and design project and apply their learning in realistic contexts using scenarios and realistic activities. Unit 12 Fine Art Materials, Techniques and Processes: Students are introduced to materials, techniques and processes used in fine art. They will have the opportunity to explore a vast array of 2D, 3D and digital materials, techniques and processes, such as painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, video and photography.
What qualifications do I need to take the course? Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (or equivalent) including Art or Photography.
How is the course assessed? The course consists of 4 Units, 2 are externally assessed and 2 are internally assessed.
Students studying on the BTEC Art and Design will have their learning enhanced by participating in visits to Art Galleries and workshops. Visiting artists and designers, including past Collingwood art students are also invited into College to talk about and present their work.
