College Planning-When To Begin
9th Grade:
-G.P.A.
-Rigor Of Courses
-High School Involvement
-Extra Curricular Activities

-Keep a log of Activities (Graduate Portfolio)

10th Grade:
-Begin looking at colleges (visit college websites)
-Continue involvement in extracurriculars, community
service, and assume leadership roles
-Take PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test) for practice (October)
-Start planning to take ACT/SAT

11th Grade:
-Narrow college choices (Attend college fair)
-Plan campus visits (great summer/spring break activity)
-Take PSAT/NMSQT to qualify for National Merit program (October)
-Take ACT/SAT
-Keep GPA up (6th semester transcripts are what will be used for college admission applications)
-Continue resume building
College Planning (Cont.)
12th Grade:
-Apply to final list of colleges
-Attend college fair
-Take college visits (1 absence from school automatically granted, 2nd granted with permission from vice principal)
-Plan to be done taking ACT/SAT by December of senior year
-Finish strong academically
-Apply for AR scholarships (www.ADHE.edu) after Jan. 1st
-Decide college attendance by May 1st

A little about the SAT
The test is changing. The new SAT will be available March 2016. From Collegeboard:
The essay is new and it is optional
No penalty for guessing
No vocabulary that you’ll never use again
Facts about the SAT
4 parts: Reading, Writing and Language, Math, and the optional SAT Essay
400–1600 score scale
3 hours and 50 minutes with the SAT Essay — or 3 hours without it
4 answer choices
4 college application fee waivers for every student who uses an SAT fee waiver

Some scholarships for 9-12 grades, but most scholarships are for current seniors.
