Page 21: COLLEGE PARK COURSE REGISTRATION Rising Seniors Class of … › wp-content › uploads › sites › 53 › ... · 2020-02-04 · state the student only needs one endorsement

What level of classes should I choose?Things to consider…

• What are your choices? (Level,Honors, DC, or AP)

• What is your teacher’s advisement?

• What are your past grades?

• How much time will be required?

• How much time are you willing to devote?

• How much time will you be spending on other things? (school activities, church, community, jobs)

• Why are you choosing this level?

• How many other advanced level courses are you taking?

Page 22: COLLEGE PARK COURSE REGISTRATION Rising Seniors Class of … › wp-content › uploads › sites › 53 › ... · 2020-02-04 · state the student only needs one endorsement

More things to consider…

• Loading up on advanced courses in the senior year has little impact on GPA and rank.

• The college application and scholarship application process is very time consuming.

• Taking advanced classes and not doing well can negatively impact your GPA more than taking a lower level and doing well.

Page 23: COLLEGE PARK COURSE REGISTRATION Rising Seniors Class of … › wp-content › uploads › sites › 53 › ... · 2020-02-04 · state the student only needs one endorsement

- Honors is more rigorous than a level course.

- Dual Credit is when a student earns both high school credit and college credit at the same time.

- AP is considered college level work. The student takes an AP exam in May and may earn college credit if they score high enough. The college the student attends issues the credit.

HONORS, DUAL CREDIT, AND AP, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Page 24: COLLEGE PARK COURSE REGISTRATION Rising Seniors Class of … › wp-content › uploads › sites › 53 › ... · 2020-02-04 · state the student only needs one endorsement

Dual Credit vs. Advanced Placement

Dual credit: Students must meet testing requirements before enrolling in class Assuming course is passed, credit is automatic at Texas public universities.Grade earned is a part of your college transcript.

Advanced Placement: More widely acceptedPossibility of earning multiple course credits if you pass the AP exam with a score of a 3, 4, or 5.

Page 25: COLLEGE PARK COURSE REGISTRATION Rising Seniors Class of … › wp-content › uploads › sites › 53 › ... · 2020-02-04 · state the student only needs one endorsement

ADVANCED COURSEAGREEMENT FORM

Any student who plans to take any advanced course will need

an Advanced Course Agreement form.

When registration closes, the Advanced Course Agreement (ACA) will be emailed to your

parents through their PAC account. Advanced courses

will be dropped if the parent does not sign the ACA by the

deadline.

Page 26: COLLEGE PARK COURSE REGISTRATION Rising Seniors Class of … › wp-content › uploads › sites › 53 › ... · 2020-02-04 · state the student only needs one endorsement

TEACHER ADVISEMENT

Teachers will be advising students for the appropriate next class and level.

Teachers will use what they know about you (the student), your abilities in class, and what they know about the curriculum requirements of the next course.

Teachers are currently working on these advisements and will be finalized by January 23rd. If you don’t see a teacher advisement prior to the 23rd make sure you go back to look at that advisement.

These suggestions are to help you make an informed decision.

Page 27: COLLEGE PARK COURSE REGISTRATION Rising Seniors Class of … › wp-content › uploads › sites › 53 › ... · 2020-02-04 · state the student only needs one endorsement

WHAT IF I CHOOSE A DIFFERENT LEVEL THAN I AM ADVISED?

The course the student selects will be in the course request.

If a course selected is a level higher than what was advised, the student will be required to watch an Advanced Course video through Canvas.

Parents will also be required to sign an Advanced Course Agreement through the PAC account sometime in March.

If these things are not completed, students will be removed from the advanced course.

Page 30: COLLEGE PARK COURSE REGISTRATION Rising Seniors Class of … › wp-content › uploads › sites › 53 › ... · 2020-02-04 · state the student only needs one endorsement

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT LIST ALTERNATES?

If no alternates are listed, the counselor will fix the schedule with classes that are available.

If the student does not like the course the counselor selected, there will be no schedule change.

Include ½ credit and full credit alternates in the 4-year plan
