Bob Rodda and Santha Schuch, Summer Conference Directors, were gracious and helpful in their efforts to host the conference. We would be remiss if we did no acknowledge the valuable– and valued– contributions of time and effort by hundreds of teacher-judges, scores of staff, and hundreds of student volunteers who worked so hard behind the scenes to pull off this monumental tournament in a matter of– quite literally– hours. They are far too numerous to acknowledge in their entirety, but we would like to draw attention, especially, to Gary Littell, State Tournament Manager; Ellen Arena who handled all housing and food arrangements for the conference; Mary Anderson and Cindy Snow who headed up the Tab Room operations; Heidi Ferguson and Laura Leonard who acted as Principal Writing Supervisors; Jane Warner, Guest Author Book Sale Chairperson; Pat Shapaka who helmed the ever-popular sale of the tee shirts; and Beth Dixon, POP State Coordinator, who– along with her many other responsibilities– both supervised the Ballot Runners and oversaw the Awards Program.

College of Wooster State Finals

Location: Wooster, Ohio 44691

Tournament Date: May 20-21, 2010

Host School Coordinator: Lorraine Merrill, Executive Director

Tournament Summary• There were 280 schools in attendance, with 355 Seventh Graders and 352 Eighth Graders:

a total of 707 contestants in all. Teacher-tournament writing judges numbered 390. • Support Staff included 38 tournament staff, 150 student runners, and 65 (est) additional

parent/adult volunteer workers. An estimated 300 relatives and other guests were also in attendance.

• The pieces of student writing produced, evaluated by judges, tabulated by tournament staff, and returned with comments to the writing team coaches at the close of the writing day numbered 2,337.

Thank Yous• Our thanks go to The College of Wooster and to its President Grant Cornwell for supporting

our mission so whole-heartedly, and opening the college’s doors– and its arms of support– to our program.

• Bob Rodda and Santha Schuch, Summer Conference Directors, were gracious and helpful in their efforts to host the conference.

• We would be remiss if we did no acknowledge the valuable– and valued– contributions of time and effort by hundreds of teacher-judges, scores of staff, and hundreds of student volunteers who worked so hard behind the scenes to pull off this monumental tournament in a matter of– quite literally– hours.

2010 Regional Best of the Best Awards All students who received a Best of Round Award at Regionals were contenders for the Best of Best Awards at the Regional level. These awards were presented at State. Best of the Best papers at all levels of competition are guaranteed publication in The Book of Winners for 2010. Those who won Best of the Best Awards at State for outstanding writing at the Regional level are listed here. Each received a $50 Savings Bond and an award certificate if they were present to receive them. Power of the Pen does not, as a matter of policy and principle, mail awards to absentee winners.

NOTE: Bond applications for these awards must be returned with edited, typed and single-spaced copy of the winning work to: Power of the Pen, Box 442, Richfield, Ohio 44286. Bonds will not be purchased until this requirement is met. *Winners that did not pick up awards on stage at the State Finals may be published if the edited, typed copies are sent in as required. However, winners will not receive awards if they were not present to receive them. It is always an embarrassment to have names announced on stage at State and have no one come forth to receive them. It sends a message out to sponsors, as well as participants, that the prestige of these awards is not valued by the recipient.

Best of the Best 2010 State Finals

In keeping with the ruling of the State Committee to publish the Best of the Best for the State Tournament instead of the written work of the top fifteen winners, these are the contestants who wrote a best response to a single prompt at The College of Wooster State Finals this year. All will receive $50 Savings Bonds and State medallions when edited copy of winning work is received at the State Office. If a student wrote more than a single Best of the Best paper, a bond for each will be awarded but only one medallion. All Best of the Best papers will be published in the 2010 Book of Winners.
